20 Crystals

These are the crystals that I acquired first when I started out working with crystals. I would recommend these to any beginner if you’re looking for somewhere to get started. As always, my opinion isn’t the end all be all (one could say it’s not set in stone) so feel free to adapt this list however you so choose! Note: these are put into alphabetical order

Agate 

Cleanses the aura, especially if a person has suffered emotional trauma

Calms temper

Help with stomach/digestive issues and problems with the uterus

Colors: blue, brown, gray, onyx and pink

Amber

Healing and casting out disease

Protect against depression

Colors: golden brown to yellow

Amethyst

Combats insomnia and protects against nightmares

Tiger’s Eye

Characteristics: golden to deep brown with bands/stripes of lighter color; most often found rough or tumbled 

Properties: protection; release from fears and anxieties

Queen Anne's Lace

Where I live, QAL grows abundantly and proudly. It seems to be able to grow anywhere: roadsides, sidewalks, ponds. This plant, also known as wild carrot, is seen by many as a weed. But, as is often the case, witches and herbalists know it has much power.

The root has long been used to make a medicinal tea, used as diuretic. The seeds were used as one of the first abortifacients (morning after pill) prescribed by physicians. The "carrot" part of the plant is often too ripe to eat once the flower has bloomed, but if you can find some before then it's perfectly edible! The blooms themselves can be used in fertility, clarity, and protection rituals.

Personally, I think the plant is a gorgeous way to add functionality and beauty to your altar or sacred space if you can find any naturally growing. However, due to its pervasive nature, I would advise against planting or growing any. As always, check for local regulations in regards to plants and wildlife.

Author’s Note: QAL can look very similar to poison hemlock so make sure you are aware of the slight differences in appearance before harvesting!!!

Rosemary

Rosemary is an evergreen shrub that grows white and purple flowers. It is native to the Mediterranean but has been exported widely across the globe for its uses in cooking. When eaten, it has been shown to be a source of antioxidants and can even be anti-inflammatory. Widely recognized as a kitchen herb, it can be used to make rosemary tea that is said to enhance one’s memory.

To grow rosemary yourself, it needs to be planted in a sunny area that has proper drainage. The plant is easily susceptible to multiple kinds of root rot if not drained and dried properly between watering. It can be grown in a pot to be used during the winter, but multiple sources I’ve found claim that the plants often don’t do well when transferred from the ground to a pot. My recommendation would be to plant it originally in a pot if you live in a colder climate so that you don’t have to worry about moving it over.

Obviously, rosemary is a very powerful herb that has lots of benefits when consumed, but it also has those properties when used in magical practice. I use it most commonly as a general protection herb that gets added to the majority of my workings. The dried sprigs can be burned as a suitable replacement for white sage, without the cultural appropriation. It does catch fire easily, so never leave it unattended. I would highly recommend rosemary to beginners since it can be used both in magic and in the kitchen!

Carnelian

Bay Leaves

A common find in grocery stores, bay leaves come from the laurel plant that grows in warm climates. You are probably most familiar with it as being dried as this is the form most commonly used in cooking. Dried bay leaves have a slightly stronger scent than fresh leaves. Bay leaves and the laurel plant have long been used to symbolically represent honor in ancient Roman and Greek societies. As you can likely guess, the plant is native to the Mediterranean. They are also known to have been used medicinally. 

When I cook with bay leaves, I am usually adding them to a stew or soup that will be cooking for a long time. Crock pot style meals are the best example of this in my house. I don’t prefer to eat the leaf itself, so I usually fish it out of my dish before eating, but it adds a subtle and pleasant flavor.

In magic, the most common use I have found for bay leaves is using them as a sort of natural notepad to write manifestations, runes, or sigils. They can be burned easily and quickly, so if you are working with fire that is something to be aware of. Personally, I use them the most to add runes or sigils to spell jars that match the intention I am trying to set. For example, I recently refreshed the protection jar that I keep in my car, so I added bay leaves with sigils for travel and protection. They can also be easily composted, so when you recycle your spell components they are safe to be buried outside.
