I honestly did not expect this to move me as much as it did. Henri’s speech here is just...really good. He’s stated before that he’s not going to waste his time with people who refuse to understand him. He was perfectly willing to disengage with and avoid Bro (Ok I broke down and looked up his name, it’s Masato), and that was a healthy, valid choice for him.

 But now he sees visibly that Masato is not only hurting the people around him with his crusade, but himself. Masato is not comfortable with himself as he is, so he tries to follow this really, narrow masculine ideal. He does have feelings and things deep down that don’t fit this ideal, and he hates himself for it. He feels threatened by people like Henri because he’s terrified of what could happen to him if he acknowledged similar desires in himself, if he chose to live freely without adhering to the roles other people assign. 

Henri can understand and sympathize with that, so he reaches out with compassion. He refuses to engage in the pointless violence Masato is wreaking and hugs the monster instead. And yeah, it shouldn’t be remotely surprising Henri has a Precure transformation in his future because that is SUCH a magical girl move. 

But Henri is firm and I think that’s important too. He doesn’t coddle Masato or try to make him feel more comfortable. He does the opposite, he says “I’m not going to change to make you more comfortable, this IS who I am, I love and accept who I am even if you don’t, and honestly? You should try to love and accept yourself like I do.” 

It’s a great message and I love how it, seemingly purposefully, applies to not just Henri’s situation, but pretty much all non-normative gender and sexual orientation, and I love seeing that in a show for kids. It’s reminds me of other media I love-the “I don’t need you to respect me, I respect me” from Steven Universe, or Janelle Monae’s “even if it makes others uncomfortable, I will love who I am”- it’s a sentiment I can never get enough of, and that I think all of us need to hear it as much as possible. This is our life. We should be able to live it freely.
