So. My first con experience was this past weekend, when my Other Half and I went to Raleigh's first Wizard Con. We were VIP ticket-holders for David Tennant, and--despite my rubbish photo (my God, the blushing, whyyyyyy)--I had an AMAZING time. We were in attendance at the panel, witnessed the "Rose as girlfriend" commentary, and mingled with some of the best people in the world. Honestly, I've never felt more at home in my own skin. Quick run-down: I wish I'd seen more cosplaying, but what I saw was excellent. My kids got pictures with a Vashta Nerada, we spotted some Weeping Angels, but there was a dearth of Cybermen and Daleks. Lots of Tens and Elevens, met a toddler Four, and saw a child Twelve. We could tell what was anime, though we didn't know the characters, and saw a pretty good Iron Man. Oh, and Captain Jack Sparrow, even down to his sashay. 😆 David Tennant is TALL. And smells divine (though hugs weren't permitted). He asked if I'd had a chance to come over for Much Ado--he was signing my copy of their script--and I had a moment to speak with him about the performance. My husband got my DT years DVD set autographed, which made lugging it around all day completely worth it. We didn't buy much in the way of merchandise, but saw some lovely artwork. I hope Wizard comes back, and I plan to return if they do. It was one of the best times I've had in a while. (Yes, I have some pictures and video. Who knows when I might post them, or if anyone would want to see them--there's already a lot out there, and from better seats.)
