WMSU-SHS STORIES: The Life of a CSM-STEM Student

Waking up before the sun rises, getting up an hour or two early for the first class , sitting for more than 10 hours inside a small spaced classroom of 37 students, going home later than six, reviewing countless lessons, coffee, sleep, repeat.

This is just an overview of a day in a SHS STEM student of CSM. Inside the institution of Western Mindanao State University, students under the STEM CSM are known to be one of the smartest and hard working when it comes to studying. In this case, many wonder what it takes to be a student under this College. Here is the list of the qualities and how students of CSM STEM cope up with the challenges of education.

- PROCRASTINATION IS NOT A THING -

When faced to a hill of requirements and performance tasks, CSM STEM students do the job as early as possible in order to get the best of their work. They never say "bukas na to" or "maya na yan" for they believe time is gold.

-TIME MANAGEMENT IS A MUST-

To survive the Senior High life, one must know to manage time. CSM STEM students are great at managing time and can multitask even without being super drained of their schedule.

-COOPERATION AND UNITY-

Of course, any family will not survive without these two qualities. Just like CSM STUDENTS, they share common understanding and appreciate everyone's participation for whatever purpose the classroom wants to achieve. Everyone is respected regardless of what makes them different.

-PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE-

Undeniably, the subjects of CSM STEM are not to be underestimated. Most of the subjects need higher and advance thinking skills and a trait the CSM STEM has is its patience in understanding each hard lesson.

-SCIENTIFIC CALCULATOR IS LYF-

Clearly every student needs a scientific calculator to survive. In CSM STEM, it is the fundamental tool to be able to understand lessons that include solving equations that probably kill students every [physics] time ;)

-CLASS GOALS-

Surely, every section has its own personality that differs all the Senior High classes of WMSU. But ONE thing is for sure: the family of CSM STEM envision themselves to graduate together with flying colors.

BY knowing these things, you surely think students of CSM STEM as highly and industrious. On the downside, there are no perfect classrooms, just like nobody's perfect. Here are some of the drawbacks of maintaining a passing grade under CSM STEM in a student's life:

-LESS QUALITY TIME-

Less quality time with family, friends, with self, you name it. The thing is, if someone is more focused on a thing regardless of its importance, that someone will automatically and unconsciously disregard some of his habits and routine, just like in the situation of a CSM STEM student.

-PRREESSSSUUURRREEE-

Alright, every student experiences this, but are CSM STEM students excempted? Totally not.

-COFFEE IS THE NEW WATER-

..especially during exams and hell week where everything is getting hotter and hotter. CSM STEM students are likely to pour all the coffee inside their lungs just to keep themselves awake while reviewing their lessons. The results? I can't really judge

-WHAT IS SLEEP?-

CSM STEM Students will prove you that they are also normal and they experience lack of sleep because of the busy schedule they have. Just try looking at their puffed and bagged eyes, you might believe what I am saying.

IN general, CSM STEM students are just like every student in WMSU: They are competitive, intelligent, serious, but with a golden heart. It is important to dig down on the life of CSM STEM students for us to be able to comprehend how they go on being what they are in a class of people of different walks in life.

November Gala : My first WMSU Halloween experience and the School USC officer induction amidst Halloween extravaganza

As the sun starts to dive in the horizon, i heard the campus begins to howl music, and i found myself thrust into a weird blend of excitement and awkward confusion. This wasn't just any Halloween bash—it was the eve of a wild extravaganza, the night of the school officer oath-taking, and the moment my sweater decided to take on a gang of goofy, haunted dresses of people. Talk about a night to remember!

As i stepped into the school ground, the gravity under my eyes sunk short. I see people coming in with their trick-or-treat costumes, all mostly in black get -ups.

My sweater? Totally not keeping up with the cool crowd. It was like a peek-a-boo moment on my part.

When the dawn kicks off with this whole induction thing. I'm checking out the new leaders' faces, and even though I don't know any of them, there's this cool vibe of camaraderie mixing in with the Halloween fun.

So, in the middle of the crowd, someone spills the beans – there's this freaky house all set to give the Crimsons a good scare. Everyone can go in by five, and folks can't help but wonder what cool, spooky stuff awaits inside. Like, how wild did they go transforming our school space, you know? I couldn't even help but marvel a thought.

And then just after our first scream with the four of my classmates echoed, I've realized that the once mundane corridors now adorned with cobwebs, solemn pumpkin candles, spooky decoration and our journey to the leading room was a spur-of-the-moment jumpscares and shouting all over, adding a thrilling chill to the atmosphere, seeping into the fabric of my sweater.

Upon reaching the end of what it seems a long dim tunnel—with all the adrenaline, panting and sweat, I just took a sec to think about how this Halloween vibe totally flips the script on our small, kinda 'not on it's good shape' campus.

Sure, the place isn't a towering building with vintage libraries, like any other colleges, but guess what? We manage to pull off an awesome Halloween bash with what we've got.

It's like our school's signature style – making the most of what's around, no need for fancy stuff. Halloween here isn't about a huge setup; it's about all of us getting into the spooky spirit together and whatever shivers our spine that came with it.

Later in the night, there were dances, singing performances, and storytelling each exerting effort, submitting to the ambience. Horror movie trailers were brilliant, from the cast to the cinematography, it feels really great that everyone on the intermission is down to put everybody on the edge of their seats.

On this very magical celebration, we let ourselves drunk in the beat of the music, under colorful lights, Laughs were shared like inside jokes, and cheers still echo in my ears. My sweater even had a showdown with some fancy cloaks, Halloween OOTD, and chill dresses on the red carpet – a night to remember, for sure!

In the end, when the clock struck late, and everybody's going home, there we were – me in my cozy sweater and sleeping pants.

Stepping out into the quiet night, I couldn't help but feel this cool vibe for the school, the awesome event team, and every pic that caught the essence of my first WMSU Halloween bash.

Yes, no more euphemism—but here's what, to experience Halloween at Western Mindanao state university (WMSU) was the coolest thing so far happens to me this year!

WMSU-SHS STORIES: Why Study Media and Information Literacy

Well why not right?

Our world revolves around technologies now even if you like it or not or if you agree or not.

It is very clear that this is true simply because people tend to use technologies in their everyday lives some examples are mobile phones, personal computers, laptops and televisions. Because of the advancement of technologies now it can be good to our society also it can be bad. Good in the sense that people can use social medias now to contact and connect with their loved ones that are not with them and students can do their assignments, projects, requirements and etc. with easier access to internet and office workers can do their proposals a lot faster and easier. It can be bad in the sense that because of having too advance technologies bad people tend to use this in their advantage to do crimes like cybercimes, phishing, libel or slander, steal identities, hack accounts and a lot more.

Department of Education (DepEd) included Media and Information Literacy for the betterment of our future and to give proper knowledge to the youths and students. Literacy can be described or it can be connected to the words read and write. By learning Media and Information Literacy we can have the ability or the knowledge to identify the different types of medias not only that but to also understand them deeper and thoroughly. We can also create our own. By learning or by having the knowledge about Media and Information Literacy our critical thinking skills will be improved not only that but also we can be a smart consumers of products and information, recognize point of views, create media responsibly and a lot more advantages.

That is why Media and Information Literacy is important to all people.

WHY DO WE STUDY MIL?

Why do we study MIL? Frankly when I was writing the first semester grade 12 schedule I don’t know what MIL subject is, i thought maybe this is just some additional works for us students but when the first semester started I learned lot of things, some are discussed inside the classroom and some were just self study. MIL isn’t just a subject, it also help us understand the way our society somewhat works and made me appreciate the way we communicate to others. A subject with applied skills for the use of media in every activity given and a multitasking ability to do all the task. MIL stands for Media and Information Literacy that can be mentally deduced the meaning of it but still with a broad terrain that for me it cannot be learned for just a couple of months. So why do we study MIL, for me the first reason is because I need grade and it is one of our subject this semester, then because I want to know more about this subject. There are lots of reason why we study MIL but then it isn’t that important to input here. So before ending this last entry of my blog I would like to say that whatever subject it is you should give your best and treasure it despite the additional hassle it may cause to you ‘cause at the end of the day you are still a student and you still need to learn lot of things (academically).

WMSU SHS-STORIES: The Life of a CSM-STEM Student

Stress. Pressure. Insomnia. A few of the vast plethora of words to describe that one place that many might consider as hell — school. Not only does this perception apply to college, it is also plays significance in senior high students. At first glance, it seems as though there's no evident stress in the day-to-day routine of these students. Well, that's only a façade — a mere mask worn by many. The pressure of passing nine subjects — most are tackled everyday, mind you — are only managed by those lucky few. Many are barely striving to allocate their time to compensate for their many subjects, leaving some subjects not prioritized. And as we all know, even those subjects deemed as 'minor' ones are important too. As for the of the stranda of the SHS level —namely: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM); Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS); Accountacy and Business Management (ABM); Technical, Vocational, and Livelihood (TVL); and General Academic Strand(GAS) — it is quite a known fact that each are difficult in their own ways. But being a STEM student poses obstacles not so evident in other strands. For one, despite having Core Subjects, you'd be focused on Mathematics and Sciences — yes, that's right, science in plural form. From that simple letter you would know that there would be branches of those subjects taught separately. This is quite a nightmare to those who aspire to become a doctor but hate such subjects. And what's worse is that those subjects are the introductory materials for college courses affiliated with the STEM strand. So being unable to comprehend the basics of Calculus can be quite ruinous for one's future in college. In most cases, the school you are enrolled in is the determining factor as to whether you'd be able to get enough sleep or not. Being enrolled in Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), despite being a prestigious school to many, is quite detrimental to those students in the senior high department. Classes usually starts at 7 am in the morning and ends at 5:30 in the afternoon, if not, later. Being a student, you'd keep in mind to go to school early. It is quite heavenly for those living near school areas but those in farther places need to sleep early in order to wake up earlier just to arrive at school earlier than 7 am. Ending in 5:30 does not guarantee an early arrival at home. For those whose houses are far away from WMSU, might arrive past 7:30 in the afternoon, if not, much later. Try doing this nearly everyday and answer if it does not wear you out. The school you're going to, in most cases, imposes its standards and levels of attainment on you, may it be through Quality Policies, Vision and Missions, etc. And such standards differ for each colleges present in the university. In the College of Science and Mathematics, it is quite a common knowledge that most students must be well-acquainted with Math and Science subjects given that the college specializes in those fields. Of course, you can't do anything but carry the pressure. With WMSU having standards, many students find ways to meet them. In most cases, they would study (an evident phenomenon in CSM) to be able to be well-equipped with knowledge. In some cases, many fall from the pressure and find gaps within their class performance. Despite such problems being faced nearly everyday, many SHS students find the living quite challenging, in the sense of adapting to the dynamic life, — well, save for the lack of sleep. Afterall, some sacrifices are made to obtain such quality education. Perhaps the sleep depriviation, difficult subjects, and pressure are there to shape a person. One can only hope for the better.

Being goofy is an impression of me at school. Despite the stress and pressure, I tend to brush it off with a dose of fun. Pass by me and smile, and I’ll give you a wacky face in return.
