I am currently in the chapter 44 (of 67) of this huge book. After the middle parts, the novel becomes slightly duller; however, I must say that it is still more gripping than the most of the novels I've read, and considering its length, I expected a slowdown would surely come while reading the interesting, gripping parts. Some of such interesting parts of the novel is related to its historical setting: the events and behaviours of the characters around Napoleon's Hundred Days and the Seventh Coalitional War (a part of the Napoleonic Wars, and includes the Battle of Quatre Bras and the famous Battle of Waterloo) were an amazing experience to read for me! There are a lot to say about characters, whom I will briefly mention in my review post but Rebecca Sharp, the protagonist, is probably the most iconic anti-heroine of the 19th-century literature. ~ «It is the pretty face which creates sympathy in the hearts of men, those wicked rogues. A woman may possess the wisdom and chastity of Minerva, and we give no heed to her, if she has a plain face. What folly will not a pair of bright eyes make pardonable? «"What is money compared to our souls, sir?"» (from Chapter X: Miss Sharp Begins to Make Friends) ~ «Are not there little chapters in everybody’s life, that seem to be nothing, and yet affect all the rest of the history?» (from Chapter VI: Vauxhall) ~ CurrentlyReading: Vanity Fair by #WilliamMakepeaceThackeray. It is a long book, a historical and a satirical novel. Thackeray, with a great metaphor opens the curtains of his "fair" in the preface. And what this fair exhibits includes self-interests, opportunism, glamour, pomp, swaggers, ladder of social classes, love, honour and some battles. Thackeray is a great observer of human behaviours. Though also having some sad and tragic moments, Vanity Fair is truly one of the most humorous books I have ever read. Rebecca "Becky" Sharp, the central character of the novel, is a really iconic character, as well as the most members of the Crawleys are. Sharp is a clever girl, she knows she must rise in society to survive, and she will scheme and feign anything to be respecteable. Amelia Sedley, another major character, is not an interesting character, as the author himself have also confessed it. My favourite character in the novel so far is William Dobbin, a captain in the army. The mustachio-curler rake Rawdon Crawley and the big-whiskered swaggerer George Osborne, both also in the army but different sections, are also significant characters who I can't decide if I like or not. ~ «The world is a looking-glass, and gives back to every man the reflection of his own face.
