I got quite a lot of asks concerning snape, so here’s my answer, once and for all (originally, this was an addition to a post now mixed with an answer to a personal message):
short answer - yes and no. I like him as a character because i’m a sucker for redemption arcs. as a person though.... not so much
long answer - if I remember correctly (and in all honesty it’s been a while since I’ve read the books), snape didn’t just “want to fuck lily potter”, he was genuinely in love with her for his entire life but lost her as a friend when he became entangled in the dark arts. there a reasons for why he behaves and acts in certain ways, reasons that were mainly shaped by rejection and loss. please understand that I’m not making excuses for his behaviour. he is, on many occasions, a horrible teacher and person towards everyone who’s not a slytherin. he is a bully, he became a death eater, scum of the earth. but - he also became a member of the order of the phoenix freely and by his own choice when he realized what he had gotten himself into. he protects the golden trio and harry in particular as good as he can. the point I’m trying to make is this: i like severus snape not because he’s a good man. I like him him because he is not, but never grows weary of trying to become one.
you do remeber that in the last book snape protects the students of hogwarts from death eaters (the carrows); steals gryffindors sword in order to give it to harry; it is revealed that he killed dumbledore (who was doomed because of the horcrux anyway) in order to once again protect an innocent student, and much more. and he did all that under great personanal distress and danger for himself - just because it was the right thing to do.
now, i agree that everyone is entitled to their own opinion - but i feel very strongly for this character because he is so often reduced to so little (wanting to fuck lily potter, for example) although I think that his arc is just as important as harrys or dumbledores. and since i made that comment on my personal blog, I never thought anyone would even read this (i don’t have that many followers).
but then jamespotterwearsglasses reblogged it again from me and added that sophisticated little comment to my mini-rant and suddenly i receive asks like yours, developing the urge to defend myself for what I thougth was an innocent little comment at the time.
Remember that saying, that every villain is a hero in his own mind/story/something (I don’t recall correctly, but that’s the sentiment) - like, for example voldemort thinks he’s actually doing something good for the wizarding community by “purefying” it? I think that that’s not true for snape - he knows that he’s a bad guy. but he just always tries so hard not to be.
