You mean the folks who named their youngest boys: Sodapop and PONYBOY. Aren't any sort of woke?? They're the most unusual couple of Tulsa, with the uniquely named children, and you're telling me they'd draw the line at their boys being queer? YOU'RE JOKING??
All of this to say, shipping in the outsiders shouldn't be so demonized, people were gay in the 60s, people are gay now. Queer people have always existed, and i'm sorry you don't see the world in a similar way as me, but you can grow the decency to keep your mouth shut when the time calls for it. Stop crying over Steve and Sodapop, or Darry and Paul, stop screaming off the rooftops about: "it's the sixties!!!" As if the Stonewall Riot didn't exist.
The whole point of the Outsiders is to accept your own individuality, to be exactly who you are no matter the challenges you face. It teaches you the lesson of how everyone, at the end of the day, are people and should be treated as such. If you get upset over something as small as fandom shipping two boys or two girls, I don't think you understood the messaging of the book. — That's not to say you can't like something, no, but to leave deliberate hate comments and posts videos and rants about how much you hate a MLM or WLW ship or how someone sees a character as trans (MTF, FTM, Nonbinary) , I think you have bigger fish to fry.
S.E Hinton never stopped shipping of her characters, she doesn't care for it, and sure, she didn't write her characters to be queer, it doesn't mean that queer people cannot project or relate to her characters. Queer people exist. Love exists.
Stop being scared of the one commonality between all of us. Stop being scared of LOVE.
