Two-Bit Mathews :-) What a jolly old guy
New rendering process
— Started as a 10 min sketch of the gang btw
Watching your little brother surpass you in everything is something I would never recover from. Darry, who had a free ticket out of Tulsa had his life turned inside out as his 20th birthday resulted in the collision of his parents. — He lost his future before it even started.
Drawing Ponyboy was so fun, Darry too.
If I were to redo this I would write out the text instead of use alightmotions fonts — I got lazy making the video, only wanted it finished as it took me ~2 months total to push myself to finish this project.
Dallas is not soft.
Dallas Winston is the character who willingly got himself into trouble, who jumped headfirst into bars and came out in handcuffs. He drank and gambled, he mugged and jumped kids, he didn't care about anybody that wasn't benefiting him, he slashed Tim's tires for the hell of it, he cheated on Sylvia as much as she cheated on him, and he intimidated Darry just by his violent nature.
Dally is not meant to be kind or nice, he is not meant to be secretly soft. He is to show the bad of the world and the group that you'd come across on a rough night in the 60s. He is to show what the world can do to a kid put in poverty, he is to show the comparison on how trauma affects a kid. He is to be tough and mean and ruthless. He is the character that is supposed to be hard to sympathize with for his softness was turned to roughness long before we meet Dallas Winston's character.
. . . But
Dallas is meant to care.
His character shows the tough exterior Dallas puts front, and hides the most surprising aspect. His care.
He cared when Johnny was jumped as he had a sickening a face of horror instead of anger.
He cared when Ponyboy was soaked after being almost drowned, quick to toss him a towel and a dry shirt.
He cared about the boy's escape from Tulsa, handling the money and safety even though it could've meant jail for him.
He cared when Ponyboy climbed out the church with the back of his jacket in flames, quickly extinguishing him before going for Johnny.
He cared as he pulled Johnny from the burning church.
He cared when he forced Ponyboy to the hospital after the rumble because Johnny wanted to see him.
and maybe it's not as nurturing as Sodapop's gentleness, or as protective as Darry. Maybe it's just as rough and sharp around the edges as Dally is, yet, he turned upside down and backwards to protect Johnny from jail, to protect Ponyboy from losing his best friend.
His care spoke miles when his actions fell short.
So maybe Dallas isn't meant to be soft, but he's meant to show his care.
"Steve hates Ponyboy"
Steve, who was one of the first on scene, running to beat the life out of the socs who jumped Ponyboy, breaking his nose in the process.
Steve, who wants to keep Ponyboy from trouble, as he and Sodapop do reckless things & doesn't want to bring the youngest, vulnerable, and impressionable kid with them to do something like drag racing.
Steve, who is there as soon as Ponyboy comes home.
Steve, despite breaking 3 ribs, immediately looking to the door upon Ponyboy's return.
Steve, who watched in horror as Ponyboy broke that bottle and handled a group of socs on his own because he was scared of Ponyboy, the sweetest greaser, being like him.
Steve never hated Ponyboy, he just couldn't show Ponyboy that he cared. — Steve's character is one that I hold dear, as though his anger speaks volumes his actions speak miles. And though he doesn't have a role in the movie, his role in the book allows Ponyboy to sympathize with Randy.
Sodapop and Steve's friendship is a parallel to Randy and Bob, and without that relationship in the book, Ponyboy wouldn't have related to Randy's perspective.
People glance at Steve's character and only see him as a flat dynamic, however his character has more depth and personality than that, it's just we as the reader are in the same perspective as Pony. His depiction in both the movie and musical, though playing small roles, lets us observe the dynamic between Ponyboy and Steve throughout the book, and we observe Steve genuinely caring for the others in the story in his own way.
Steve Randle cared for Ponyboy just as much as he cared for Sodapop and the rest of the Curtis gang. I would go so far to say that they behave like the typical brothers you'd expect to see.
I have so many headcanons for The Outsiders so here's just a handful of the ones that I always tend to look back to.. (3 hcs per character lmao)
Ponyboy
1 . . Pony always needed glasses, but he never wore them. His vision isn't HORRENDOUS... I mean, unless you hold up your hand a few feet away from him, then yeah, maybe it's worse than he thought. — Pony just never adored the thought of rough housing and his frames snapping or something of that sort. He especially hated the thought of the gang teasing him whenever he wore his big-bulky glasses around his residence...
2 . . This boy tans so damn much in the summer that sometimes it's the only way to tell him and Darry are related. — The two of them look identical during the summer. ESPECIALLY because of the tan lines.
3 . . He claimed number 79 in track the first time he joined, never realizing it was the atomic number for gold. In fact, he never realized it until Steve made the connection one night in the kitchen. — 79 was Sodapop's favorite racer.
Sodapop
1 . . Sodapop has both freckles and vitiligo. His momma used to call his white spots his sweet spots. — His vitiligo doesn't frequently change locations or spread as much as it used to, but growing up, for an entire 3 weeks his forearm to his palm was depleted from his usual melanin. — Additionally, he has spots in his hair that are completely white. He didn't realize it until Steve pointed it out one day.
2 . . Soda has a knack of staying stuck in his ways. He overthinks and complicated a lot of situations, especially verbal instructions. It used to drive Mr. Curtis nuts with how confused he'd make Soda by simply telling him that he needs him to head inside to his tool box that's near the small drawer near his dresser
3 . . He definitely has AuDHD (likewise, his brothers do too🥹) however, he never realized that his fixations were so intense until one night where he genuinely didn't sleep for nearly 37 hours because he just couldn't figure out something about that one engine he was working on at the DX. — & — His stims are horrendous too. He doesn't openly stim as much as he used to, but even with the stims he doesn't mask down, they're still loud. Usually he's jumping in place, or slapping his hands against his thighs. Teeth grinding as well. He likes the noises as much as he likes cars. — Lastly, he doesn't have tolerance for high pitched buzzing & has almost quit the DX several times because of the freezer section. He HATES IT!
Darry
1 . . Darry cares TOO MUCH about his hair. Not to the extent that Steve or Sodapop, no, but he needs it to be neat. He HATES his cowlick and it's the bane of his existence, because no matter the length, the damn thing is ALWAYS sticking out. — Mr. Curtis used to tease him by calling his cowlick his antenna because of how often it'd point straight up..
2 . . He is horrible at friendships. Like if you're not in his life everyday, you're forgotten about. That could stretch to people that he works with, even. — It's not that he doesn't care or anything, it's just he's already so stressed out with his career & family that he believes that people outside of the gang just aren't really there. If you aren't bothering him everyday, you don't exist.
3 . . He has a horrible habit of popping literally any joint of his body. His knuckles especially. You'd hear him pop his knuckles across the damn house with every door from his bedroom to the living room shut. — He picked up the habit during football.
Steve
1 . . Steve is overly blunt in tone. He doesn't mean to sound rude or inattentive but sometimes he just cannot put emotion behind his voice. Whenever he does, it sounds even more sarcastic compared to when he doesn't.
2 . . He has autism but never was officially diagnosed (60s). — He has a horrible time with identifying emotions or tone, just as much as he can't play it. — Also, he cannot stand textures touching his hands. He wears these thick gloves all the time at the DX and swears it's just to prevent gas or oil from getting under his nails, but in truth, most days he can't even stand something like water on his hands because of the way that it sticks. Stickiness is what he hates especially. Transitions too.
3 . . He has a bad leg. (In most instances I make him have a prosthetic leg, bcz 1. I just like the design, and 2. It's fun.) — Always had problems getting up and down because of his knee pain, but walking is what kills him best. He doesn't necessarily need a cane or anything, and would probably refuse it if given, but some days it would definitely be more effective than dragging a limp limb.
Two-Bit
1 . . Two-Bit has diabetes, no, not bcz he's bigger in my interpretation, it's type 1. He received it from his dad. — He wears an insulin patch on his shoulder (in more modern-ish interpretation, but accurately, he'd need shots. Which in that case, he'd always have a bit of supply stored at the Curtis' for safety.)
2 . . His sister, who I call Sarah-Anne, and him, are only half related (different dads), but Two-Bit loves that girl more than he'd ever care about anything else. The number of things he's 'bought' for her to keep a smile on her little round is ridiculous. — Talking about them, Two-Bit is the one who does her hair, from braiding to beads, it's always him. (As their momma is always busy.)
3 . . He takes over for Darry in the oldest brother role. Being the 2nd oldest means that he's the next in charged majority of the time. Of course he's goofy and doing anything to get his friends to laugh, but if he needs to get something through to someone, he ain't scared to yell. He knows when to lock in ^_^!!
Johnny
1 . . He ain't good at words. In both a reading and talking sense. His reading and writing skills were horrific for someone his age, as he never realized he was dyslexic. — His speech was never all too good either. He doesn't necessarily have a stutter, but he stumbles a lot. He's continually pausing mid sentence to string together his thoughts before he resorts to mumbling as he'd get embarrassed.
2 . . Johnny is no morning person and is salty whenever waken up by the gang. He's been awaken a hundred times over whenever he sleeps in the lot, usually by someone like Steve or Dally, and each time he bites some insult their way. "You look about as homeless as a stray, Dal, don't tell me where to sleep.."
3 . . He's scarily good at sneaking around. The Curtis' don't realize whenever he comes over in the night. Majority of the time whenever he did show, nobody would realize until he walked into the kitchen outta nowhere and get a surprise yip from Darrel.
Dallas
1 . . He knew Darry growing up, before he moved to NYC, where he lived from ages 8 to about 12 years old. — He was born in Tulsa, moved about seven and a half, and came back when he was near 14. — The two of them used to be closer than they are now.
2 . . He'd never do anything in art, because he doesn't give a rats ass about it, but he's drawn out quite a few of Tim Shepard's tattoo ideas. — On that topic, he also has tattoo that he doesn't much talk about or bring attention to (shockingly.) and it's a wilted rose on his right (back) shoulder blade that has a date underneath it.
3 . . He has very few things from NY and doesn't talk about it, ever. Though, he has this aged, purple hair tie that's either holding up his hair or around his wrist that he got from his momma in NY. Likewise, his bomber jacket is basically a relic that already had holes from a previous gunshot. — A gift from his old gang, is what he calls it at least.
The thought of Ponyboy graduating & getting out of Tulsa while Darrel, who was supposed to get out, is stuck. — Hurts my heart to think, but I feel like Darry is salty about never leaving. I mean after all, he had the brains. He had the ticket. It's just the train passed him by instead of stopping to take him with it.
He'd never admit his envy of his kid brother, but glory how he wished his momma and pops were still around.
Ponyboy leaving Tulsa to go to Dallas TX is a funny thought.
Ponyboy is the perfect mix of his big brothers, while Sodapop and Darry are the carbon copies of their parents.
Pony never realizes how much he looks like Darry (or Soda, really) he just knows he doesn't look too much like either of his parents, besides for the freckles that he got from his momma.
— Talking about Momma Curtis, I've always imagined Sodapop being almost exactly like her in every way necessary, from the gentle tone, to the way he looks. He used to spend so much time with his Mom to the point he remembers each poem she read and every recipe she'd cook.
Darry on the other hand had spent so much time with his pops to the point Baby Ponyboy would almost get confused on which Darrel was talking to him!! Though, unlike Mr. Curtis, Darry never got into trains or cars, he liked physical activity, but never engines and stains you'd never get rid of. Instead he took up sport, and occasionally, would join momma in the garden, while Sodapop and Steve would spend the day watching cars with papa.
Ponyboy got the best of each world. He never picked sides on who he loved more in his family, yet would always linger just a bit closer to Sodapop and Darry instead of Mom and Dad. He loved his momma, of course, would spend his time curled in her lap as she would read. Pony would equally spend his time with papa out in the garden picking at dirt, or playing some sport Mr. Curtis spontaneously made up.
Dallas Winston is a character I love ; From his complexity in character to the plain surface he tries to give. — His character being strong enough to handle the hell of prison @ 10 years old, but too weak to stand alone as Johnny dies. He's a bad person to everyone but to Johnny he might as well be the oxygen in the air. — That range of complexity is something I always love seeing in characters. Dallas Winston, Bob Sheldon, many more after.
Projection is my 2nd nature — You might not agree with headcanons provided in my art and that's golden, I do not mind.
Scene 1 is taken after Dallas runs out of the hospital & is in his last moments of "Little Brother." — Based on how Ponyboy found his shirt before he found Dally.
Darry calls his baby brothers every nickname under the sun. — I like Darry's 1st frame better than his 2nd
— Part 1 of Sodapop's Week
I love drawing smoke, can we tell.
Dallas' new design is so fun to draw i love him.
And clearly... I love the last page dearly.
Yk how grief is whenever you lose someone? Like, for weeks-to months at a time, you're absolutely fine, but then one week you're absolutely devastated by the mere remembrance of your lost ones? Yeah, well that's how Sodapop grieves.
He doesn't show it around his house, unless it's him and Darry, as he'd rather explode than be seen crying in front of his kid brother. Yet, at work? It's a different story. Usually, Soda's ones of the most talkative guys in town, but as soon as his grief makes it to his heart, he'd might as well be challenging Johnny Cade for the quietest in the gang. — Hell, he'll hardly even talk to Steve with how heavy his heart weighs.
For as big of a heart Sodapop has, he sure has no way to let loose the weight that's chained it down since that horrific day.
In my mind, when Sodapop goes through these week-long periods, he's real zoned out. Half his mind is stuck in nostalgia, while the other side is stuck on what his parents would do if they were still around. — They certainly wouldn't be happy with him dropping out... Or how the house is riddled with arguments instead of conversation...
— It's a constant spin of a disc that Soda can't stop until the music runs out. — A strum of music that devastates you until you can't be devastated anymore.
I feel, a lot of these periods are started when a lady is all too motherly, or when a boy and his father come into the shop to watch Steve and Soda work on the cars. — Whatever it is, no matter how small and insignificant, if it reminds Soda of his folks, he'll pause for the week and resume whenever he can get his head outta the gloom.
He can't stomach being around Ms. Mathews whenever in those episodes, as for as lovely as she is, she's all too similar to the mother he lost all too early.
Soda really misses his parents.
His momma's cooking and words, to his father's sports and jokes. Every small detail that they had is shared amongst the gang, and every time he looks too close, he gets stuck with his heart pulling him down.
Old Western x Newsies au 🤤
I have so much to post... Been post banned for far too long... and I can't keep looking back at my art from over a year ago....
Dallas and Johnny :-)

When you grow up on the wrong side of New York, you learn two things.
How to survive & to keep your eyes on the least suspecting people.

"You didn't mean all of that, did ya Dal?"
"What's it change."
"Not much, probably. What's said was said... Though it's better to know if you were bluffing. . . So were you?"
"I meant most of it."
It's just . . . When you grow up on the streets as a damn street rat. You get this. Look. 'S not it's anything new, just didn't expect here.
"Just don't think Darrel likes me no more."
