Present and Future

"Good morning, Princess!"

Zelda's smile, a wonder significantly more common in the modern age, shone through the early morning fog. "Welcome back to Hateno, Purah! It's wonderful to see you again." A tiny hand stretched out from the sling cradled against her chest. 

“Aw, is that the baby?!” At Zelda's approval, Purah peeked inside the cloth to see a golden baby stretching. “Oh, She's gotten so big since I last saw her.” 

“She's got her father's snout…” Zelda chuckled, lifting a tiny wrist. “And his paws, too. It's fascinating! The traits that dictate the brunt of the Wolfbred tribe's differences from Hylians would appear to be dominant in a first-generation hybrid!” Her voice fell off for a few awkward seconds before her grip tightened on the baby's small wrist. 

“What's wrong?”

“Just… we almost lost her so many times…  more times than I can count on my hands…” 

Purah gripped Zelda's shaking hand with her's. “But you didn't. Despite all odds, she made it. She was born healthy and happy, and she's thriving now. Her Papa was a significantly riskier baby, and he made it through! She's fine, Zelda.”

Tears Zelda didn't even know were forming creeped out the corners of her eyes as she looked down at the little one snuggled against her chest. Purah was right. Despite the sheer number of near-misses Zelda's pregnancy carried, both Zelda and Zelda Ivee made it to the other side alive. She was a miracle in so many ways, and now her parents got to cherish her instead of fretting about her survival. 

“Speaking of her papa, where is good ol’ Linky?” 

A laugh finally broke across Zelda’s burdened visage. “Come with me.” With a light beckon of the hand, she led Purah across the village to the Great Ton Pu Inn. 

By the time they'd reached the small two-pot cooking station, Purah could see the form of a blond man laying underneath the inn's balcony. She chuckled as Zelda climbed the first small flight of the Inn's stairs to sit next to the tiny sapling near Link's head. “He's prepared for rain, now isn't he?” 

“Yes,” Zelda gently reached underneath the balcony and brushed a yellow butterfly off Link's nose. “He's hunkered down, as they say, for a long nap.”  

“Does he normally sleep outside the house?”

“Outside of the house’s actual footprint, you mean? Yes, he does spend a lot of time sleeping outside the house. If you mean whether he sleeps a lot off of our property, then it depends. If I’m at home then he’ll usually stay around there too.” She chuckles, stroking her daughter’s head while admiring her husband. “On the ground level to the second floor if it’s sunny, under the roof between the two second-floor windows if it’s rainy, somewhere out in the yard if he’s not feeling too great. When he gets really anxious, I’ve even seen him climb up onto the pergola over the door and lay down there! Really, wherever he can get to that doesn’t cross the bridge. If I’m out amongst the town, then he could really be found sleeping anywhere between the Ginner Woods and Hateno Bay. Although, while I’m working he usually hangs out either at home or at the school. He doesn’t tend to wander much then. He seems to prefer locations resembling a kind of open-air stall, with a roof but no walls. I built him a little hutch on the eastern side of the house near the big tree recently, for when he starts having joint trouble and can’t get up to his more preferred spots as easily.” 

“Yes, he is getting older… Do you have a reason to think he’ll start having problems soon? There’s still a whole decade before Link’s officially a senior Wolfbred.” 

She sighed, reaching under again to brush hair out of Link’s sleeping face, a somber expression glimmering as she viewed the faint markings present on Link’s forehead, as well as his multitude of facial scars. “I’m really worried about his right leg. That ball joint was a concern for the medical staff even before the Calamity… I guess I’m just worried about dysplasia. And those super small joints he’s got in his knees, Father always said they were a poster case for early arthritis. He really abused that right knee as a knight, so I’m worried it’s not going to last much longer.” She shook her head and forced a laugh. “I really shouldn’t worry too much, he just turned nineteen.” 

Purah laughed, disturbing Link slightly. “We did just celebrate good ol’ Linky, didn't we?” She smiled as Link's snorts returned to soft snores. “Is he in any pain? If he doesn't seem to be hurting yet, I'd say just make sure he's not jumping off things for now. The researcher in me wants to get a good look at his bones and joints, but I know better than to try and pat him down while he's sleeping. Lasli's still got that scar.” 

“Link doesn't seem to be in any pain per se. He seems a little uncomfortable in the humidity, but not pained.” 

“Well, my knees are uncomfortable in the humidity, and I was six until recently. He'd probably have to get looked at. Which he won't like.”

“No… no he will not.” Zelda repositioned the cloth cradle around her chest so that the little pup didn't squirm away from her, Zelda Ivee didn't seem to take her mother's security very well and began to fuss. “Hopefully, being in Hateno with the other wolfbred will make Link less fussy. I really don't need to manage him on top of the little one.” 

The infant's crying woke Link, he slowly brought himself back up to all fours (although Purah definitely took note that Link was not having the easiest time) and crawled over to his baby. He stuck his snout-like nose into the sling and began to purr, Zelda Ivee calming shortly after grabbing ahold of his snout.

“Aw, good boy, Link. Good dad.” His wife ruffled his hair and kissed his sleepy forehead. She had all kinds of urges to mess with his hair, calling him all kinds of names more befitting a cute dog than a retired hero, but she forced herself to repress them. One hundred years ago, it was common, but it was no longer acceptable for a Hylian to treat a Wolfbred in such a lowly manner.

Purah giggled as the super-soldier sported a giant, goofy grin with his nose being tugged on by a baby. No research paper from the era of the Wolfbred's creation would say that this could possibly be any kind of life for someone like him, but Link clicked right into his role in the village, and his family, like he'd been designed specifically to do so. She'd been worried when Link began to present the disorder that had plagued male Wolfbred just before the exile, that Link's humanity would seep away until he was only an animalistic beast. However; it seemed that, despite all odds, Link was still the same man that Zelda had fallen for a century before. And for her sake, the baby's sake, and the sake of the rebuilding kingdom; that was a gift from Hylia. 

Now if only she could figure something out for his stuff joints…

Story - 

Sir Pryze Ordona is one of the Castle’s last Wolfbred knights. He is a mentor to Link, and ten years older. He was a throne room guard until Queen Zelda Miranda’s assassination, then was reassigned to Zora’s Domain. He eventually becomes one of Zelda Esmerelda’s guards, at Link’s approval.

He was supposed to garner the title of Arvador, which means savior heir; however, after it became clear he was not displaying the typical behaviors of a pubescent Wolfbred male the title was given to Link instead. Despite Link being “more important” than Pryze in just about every area, Pryze has fought to keep a warm relationship with his cousin(?) and crown prince. Pryze is often insecure when not on the battlefield. Due to the plummeting population of Wolfbred, Link and Pryze's worth for all their lives has been tied to their ferocity in battle and their reproductive success… the latter Pryze is wholly insufficient in. This has caused romantic failure after romantic failure for Pryze: Hylian women aren't fond of Wolfbred regardless, but Pryze has been dumped by everyone he tried to court once they figured out his condition. As much as Pryze is upset due to his desire for pups of his own, he knows his infertility makes Link's life even more stressful despite the boy's young age as the only capable male born in the past 30 years.

Shortly before the Calamity, when news broke out through Castle Town that the Princess was suddenly pregnant, Pryze knows immediately that it's not a Hylian baby growing inside her, but a Wolfbred pup. He'd picked up on Link's behaviors towards the Princess over the past year, especially after their current season began, and confronted Link in the Castle. For quite some time, Pryze believed that Zelda had deceived Link, and that there was no demand from Hylia for the pair to reproduce.

About two years before the Great Calamity, Pryze was traveling to Gerudo Town with Princess Zelda and the rest of her guard. Although men cannot enter the gates of the city, Urbosa and her high-ranking guards came out to greet them. The captain of Chief Urbosa's Guard was named Esosu, who Zelda knew well and Link was fond of. Despite Pryze's insecurities about relationships with women, he and Esosu soon became fast friends, then fell in love… shortly before the Calamity, after seeing how Hyrule treated Link and Zelda's marriage, became engaged themselves. Although he was a royal knight at the time of the Great Calamity, he had not been when the Calamity struck. While Wolfbred were normally offered the spring season off, he refused to take the season off because Link never got the season even though he so desperately needed it. After being appointed to Zelda’s guard, he became ineligible. By divine provision, he'd been working with the Sheikah in Kakariko when the Calamity struck, sparing his life from the carnage that befell the rest of the royal knights.

After Link’s death, he stepped into the role of Hateno Village’s historian; a role that had been left vacant since Link’s mother’s sudden death 7 years before. He wears ruby earrings given to him by Esosu. He would end up becoming the adoptive father to two precious children who had lost their families in the Calamity and its aftermath, as well as helping raise Link’s sister after Link’s and his father's sudden deaths.

HFS - Hyrule's Caste System

Pantheon - the gods and goddesses of Hyrule, of which the primary ones are Hylia, Din, Nayru and Farore. The Seven (eight) Heroines are included.

Lineage of Hylia - the descendants of Hylia, both male and female. These individuals cannot be killed by mortal hands without incurring divine wrath (or so Hyrule believes) due to divine blood. In ancient times, the Lineage of Hylia could not be removed from the line of succession for any reason except by Hylia herself. Following Princess Shamia's genocide, members of the Lineage of Hylia could be removed only for high crimes against the people of Hyrule, or for treason. Notable inclusions are the Zelda lineage, of whom the eldest serves as High Priestess.

Pantheon Saints - Saints, servants or other divine vessels of a member of the Pantheon. There are three guardian saints who are believed to be either reincarnations of the Golden Goddesses, or appointed by them (no one can agree). Notable inclusions are Dinraal, Farosh, Naydra, Regent (the dragon who ordains kings and queens), Sirie (Guardian Saint of Wisdom), Berlon (Guardian Saint of Courage), Tyrvori/Mursi (a pair of spirits serving as the Guardian Saint of Power, seen as one unit) and Vammira (a spirit supposedly sent by the Pantheon to induce either dragonification or transmutation of mortals into saints)

Hyrulean Royals - Royalty outside the Lineage of Hylia. Can be killed without specific divine wrath, or removed from power for reasons other than those listed above.

Ordained Champions - added approximately five years before the Calamity occurred. The Royal Family's sacred warriors, ordained as a chosen few by the High Priestess (the eldest daughter of Hylia)

Hyrulean Nobles - Nobles of Hyrule's court. Includes elites, lords/ladies, and individuals who have both been knighted and given a personal assignment.

Foreign Royals - Royals outside the Hylian Royal Family. Notable inclusions are the Zora Royal Family, Urbosa, the Rito elder, the Goron lord and Impa

Foreign Nobles - Nobles outside the Hyrulean Court.

Upper Class - Non-Nobles who are Upper or Upper-Middle in socio-economic classification. Also includes Castle staff and some foreign upper class.

Lower Class - Non-Nobles who are neither Upper/Upper-Middle class or peasant. Includes non-voluntary Castle staff and unassigned and/or unknighted soldiers. Typically does not include foreign lower class due to these individuals not interacting outside their immediate kingdoms.

Peasants - An average individual with no connections to royalty or the military. Usually live outside of Castle Town and its neighboring settlements.

Half-Citizens - The Wolfbred and their royals, nobles, citizens and deities/reverent figures.

Wolfbred deities or reverent figures are not included in the Pantheon or Pantheon Saint categories due to the tribe's caste. This includes Celaeno Orientalis and Neclutoph.

Social Makeup Study - Hateno Village (HFS, TotK)

Village Structure

Leadership system: Eldership and a monarchy-like structure both appear to be used at once. An electoral system has become popular with some citizens, and Hyrule's monarchy has begun to restore itself, both further complicating the matter. The monarchy-like structure is not well understood in modern times, due to the pressures of greater Hyrule.

Leader/Ruler: Reede Imperial (leader/mayor, under dispute), Link Hyrule (elder, under dispute, King of Hyrule)

Economy: As a former land of exile, Hateno is traditionally non-exporting. However, the village became known for agriculture and dye production after the Age of Burning Fields. Recently, the village has become a hub for textiles such as clothing and hats. The past century has brought significant changes in this area, which has also brought unease.

Demographics: Historically was 100% Pedigreed Wolfbred, although the modern village has a makeup of approximately 50% Wolfbred/Wolfbred Hybrid and 50% Hylian. This shift was also brought about in the last 100 years.

Beliefs and Afterlife: A Hylia-worshipping village. Wolfbred mythology depicts them having been created by the Twilight's interaction with their ancestor and believe that the Twilight became heritable through his line. Although the Twilight Realm is not an afterlife realm (nor was it intended to be), the Wolfbred still believe their ghosts will be returned to the Realm when their bodies fail because of their own Twilight, and believe that Midna created the Celaeno Orientalis constellation (a wolf-like constellation that appears over Hateno) as a replacement for the Mirror of Twilight to help their souls return "home". Due to the Mirror of Twilight's destruction, there is no way to confirm or deny this belief; however, it appears to have been reinforced by Link's successful command of both Wolfbred-like spirits and Hylia's Honor Guard (souls of past heroes) in battle. They also view several dragons in high regard, with two appearing to have ties to Courage and Wisdom.

Citizens

Link (Imperial) Hyrule: The last documented purebred male Wolfbred, and the last Wolfbred born under exile. For this reason, he’s referred to as the last “Pedigreed Wolfbred”.  Champion of Hyrule/Hylians, despite not technically being Hylian, and beloved mate of Princess Zelda. Died during the Great Calamity, but not before becoming King of Hyrule. The first Wolfbred King since Kakku. Cause of death: fatal battle wounds. He was resurrected 100 years after his death, and reigns over Hyrule today with his beloved. The Sheikah crowned him King Sovereign before Calamity Ganon was sealed for good, as the throne would pass to whichever of King Rhoam's heirs/relatives was found alive first. Called "Grandpa" (sometimes written "Grandpaw") by his extended family. Has developed blindness in one eye as well as joint pain, two common signs of a Wolfbred's aging, and is technically retired from all soldiering. He wants to be a better ruler than his mother, a queen known for her hostile foreign policies and preference to exterminate outsiders, but his physical and mental stresses often have him regressing to his teachings.

Zelda (Esmerelda) Hyrule: The first Hylian to marry into the tribe in 10,000 years due to the exile, and mother of Hyrule's first (chronologically-speaking) Wolfbred-Hylian hybrid: Zelda Ivee. Said to be the only true Hylian who could speak the Wolfbred tongue fluently before the Calamity. The Sheikah's crowning of Link restarted the Kingdom of Hyrule, so this Princess hasn't seen a need to rush her ascension to the Queen's throne. Her temper was found to be of Wolfbred descent, as she is Karu’s descendant. A beloved teacher at the newly build Hateno Schoolhouse.

Zelda Ivee Hyrule: King Link and Princess Zelda’s beloved little girl and the new Princess Zelda. She is the first Wolfbred hybrid since her distant ancestor Karu, and her soul is over a century old despite her age of five. Her upbringing will likely shape the future of Hyrule, as her parents come from such different backgrounds. Current studies regarding her aim to identify whatever might trigger the aggressive tendencies her family tree is infamous for, so her exposure to such triggers can be limited. 

Reede Imperial: Leader of Hateno Village and descendant of Sydnei (Link's sister). He retains a strong desire to stay in tune with his heritage and prides himself on keeping Hateno just the way it was during the exile: a safe haven for the Wolfbred. He inherited the antagonistic tendencies of his family. Although he is generally a very peaceful, vegetable-loving man, he has recently begun to display aggressive behavior, and has gotten in a few fights. (Now that the villagers think about it, so has Link.)

Clavia Imperial: Reede's wife and the mother of Karin. Clavia is Hylian, but has been accepted into the Clan as if she were Wolfbred. While her daughter is in school, she spends time at Link and Zelda's, often helping tidy the place so the half-blind Link can keep his last good eye on his pup. Besides, she believes it does Link good to have someone other than Zelda to talk to.

Karin Imperial: Reede and Clavia's daughter, and a pupil of Zelda's. Currently, Karin is not affected by her family's tendencies. Purah aims to prevent exposing both her and Zelda Ivee to whatever causes those tendencies to develop. Although, considering how riled up their fathers have suddenly gotten, Purah and her fellow researchers may have to work fast to identify the cause and isolate it from the girls.

Sophie and Cece: A pair of Wolfbred-Hylian sisters. Cece is eldest. Their existence greatly influences modern Wolfbred-Hylian relations as Sophie is considered legally Wolfbred, while Cece is the first hybrid to not be legally Wolfbred, at least within the village. Surprisingly, Sophie is the more docile of the two. Cece recently moved back in after traveling the world to study fashion. Village opinions are mixed. Link and Sophie are friends. Link and Cece are not.

Ivee: Daughter of the family who runs East Wind General Store. It's rumored that she was actually named after Zelda Ivee, as Hateno thought she'd been killed in-utero during the Great Calamity.

Pruce, Amira and Azu: Family of Ivee, runs East Wind. Ancestor was a dear friend of Ordon, which strengthens the rumors about the origins of Ivee's name. Father, mother and younger brother, respectively. Azu has taken fondly to "protecting" the village, a tendency that often develops in Wolfbred males as they approach and reach puberty.

Tamana: A former Cucco rancher, and Teebo's mother.

Teebo: A very polite Wolfbred pup and Tamana's son. Has shown an immense interest in weapons and the warrior arts since he was very young, and now fills a slot on the day-shift Hateno guard. His apparently innate interest in warrior arts and protection have brought him and Link into a mentor-mentee relationship.

Medda: A tomato-raising farmer, and Aster's father. His wife passed many years ago, but he and his daughter seem to be doing well.

Aster: Medda's daughter. Loves tomatos and froggies, and recently moved next door to Link and Zelda.

Dantz, Koyin: A family of Wolfbred who live outside the town on a farm in the forest, completely devoted to the ways of their ancestors. Father and daughter, respectively.

Sayge, Senna and Sefaro: Family running the Kochi Dye Shop. Sayge and Senna are devoted artisans, who are thriving with Hateno's new textile based market. Sefaro, however, is a much more studious soul who prefers to read history books at the schoolhouse. He's tried to badger Link into teaching him more sensitive history like the Great Calamity, Wolfbred Exile and Sheikah Fallout; currently to little-to-no avail. Perhaps when the little historian is older... or when other tensions in the village smooth over....

Prima: Said to be the prettiest Wolfbred after Midna Marie. May be related to Linky due to the strong facial resemblance to his mother, but is clearly not of the Imperial family.

Worten: Prima's husband. A Wolfbred-Hylian hybrid like his wife, which was seen as a milestone for the species (as hybrids had become distant enough to interbreed again)

Uma: An elderly Wolfbred-Hylian. One of the first hybrids to be born, and has lived since the Age of Burning Fields. Full of knowledge about the village and its history, with a priceless ability to see multiple perspectives for almost any conflict in the village. She usually attempts to soothe Link and Reede when they are riled, often with more success than their wives.
