Not every adventure ride has to be an expedition to some far-flung destination. Day trip rides can be equally enjoyable, and a lot more doable for busy schedules. Just pack the basics, head out to an area you're curious to explore and discover new things you never knew were there. Recently, we’ve been having a blast escaping the city on our Royal Enfield Scram 411 test mule, which has proven to be a great companion for day trips. It's a versatile and affordable bike for daily commutes, featuring a nimble chassis that’s appreciated while exploring beyond the pavement. Our go to luggage setup on the Scram has been the Wolfman Zip-R tail bag and Tincup Pocket tank bag. With about 12 liters of total capacity, it easily swallows essential gear for a day ride (e.g. extra layer, tools, first aid kit, goggles) and keeps small items you need quick access too (e.g. lip balm, sun glasses, snacks, wallet, phone) at your fingertips. 📷 @elywoody

Baja Bound

This trip to Baja, started as a joke. Karl and I were supposed to do a different trip at the end of 2017 that got cancelled due to snow. So, we were talking about alternatives we could try, and I jokingly threw in Baja. It snowballed and well here we are.

We've been scouting some new riding areas on the Honda CRF450RL. To carry our gear, we mounted the Wolfman Unrack E-Base harness (designed to fit narrow enduro machines) with three small waterproof Rolie bags strapped to it. This minimalist setup offers just enough space to carry your essentials for day rides and shorter trips. We also threw in a fuel bottle to give the CRF450RL some much needed additional range. So far it's proved to be a versatile and durable luggage system that stays cinched down tight in rough terrain. We also like that it can be quickly removed with two straps to take all your gear into a hotel after a hard day of riding. Plus you have the option to easily change bags on the base harness to expand capacity for longer journeys. Check it out at the ➡️ LINK

We tested Shoei's Light Transition Face Shield on the Hornet X2 during our recent trip up the California Coast. Photochromic molecules embedded in the shield enable it to quickly lighten or darken to adapt to changing light levels. With the ride passing through thick fog on the coast, then bright sunny skies above the clouds, through dark redwood forests on dirt roads, and finally rolling into camp at dawn, it was a true test of its adaptability. We found it would adjust within a minute or two, fast enough to never cause a problem during our testing. We did notice though that with the bright sun setting on one side of the helmet, it could create some mildly distracting patterns on the screen. Also, if you leave the windscreen up, the vent holes in the peak create temporary patterns on the lens when you flip it back down. Overall though, the fully-activated tint was dark enough for bright conditions and it was nice not riding with sunglasses or worrying about carrying a spare clear lens. For our ride up California's Central Coast, we threw a set of Wolfman's Next-Gen Waterproof soft luggage on the CRF1100L Africa Twin. While the rain was never a threat, it was a great opportunity to test the usability of Wolfman's new luggage set. We combined the Enduro Tank bag with the UnRack System, which uses a base harness that lets you pick and choose different sized bags to mount. We attached a set of Medium Rolies on the sides and a Small Expedition Duffel on top for a combined capacity of 70 liters with the Tank Bag – perfect for a 3- to 4-day camping trip. The bike maintained a slim profile and everything packed down tight and secure on rough trails. The top duffel was also convenient for getting quick access to layers, snacks and other nick-nacks throughout the trip.
