I noticed a lot of fans of Harlots watch Black Sails. Do you recommend the series?
Oh, absolutely!
But I recommend it with some caveats. Black Sails is a fantastic series. It’s a gripping narrative with captivating characters that deals with very powerful themes of power, institutionalized oppression, systemic violence, civilization, race, homophobia, the way narratives shape our understanding of the world, etc etc. It’s fun and funny and thrilling and heartbreaking and gets more and more LGBT as it goes on. It’s a goddamn good time.
But, especially to anyone coming to it fresh off Harlots who’s looking for a similar experience, I would warn: it is far more brutal than Harlots. There’s a lot of explicit violence, including sexual assault, and I think that the sex-worker characters/community are, overall, not handled in as sensitive a manner as Harlots has accustomed us to (though there is one very major character who’s a sex worker). I’ve seen a lot of people say that they feel that season 1 in particular is not up to the standard of the rest of the series – a little more stereotypical, less nuanced than the later seasons, somewhat more subject to problems with how it treats its characters (especially the marginalized ones) and handles its themes. Personally, s1 still drew me in right away, but I do think all that is a fair criticism.
Overall, though, it’s really an excellent show. I love it, I know lots of others who love it, and I’d certainly recommend giving it a try!
haha you were A HUNDRED PERCENT right
Honestly before this I had no reason not to start GoT. I just didn’t want to get super into it. I feel bad for y’all though because you waited so long for this season only to be disappointed
ok first off... your handle is AMAZING ???!!!!
Hahaha thank you!
wolfwars replied to your post: So I watched 4x06 with Mr. Rings. And informed...
penny 40 with penny 23 is chaotic good and your husband is really onto something here
Yeeah. It’s quite tempting to through the two of them into a threesome, though With Who is really the question.
'Fleabag' broke my heart, and I expect nothing less from 'Killing Eve'!
I haven’t watched it yet!!! It’s on the list RN
