Meet Emery Nolasco, an underwater robot engineer, and problem solver!
The open ocean and deep sea are extremely challenging environments, and MBARI couldn’t do ground-breaking science without our innovative engineers and operations staff to take us there. We’re celebrating Emery, the womxn of MBARI, and all #WomenInScience for paving the way for a new generation of curious problem solvers. Stay tuned for the pilot episode of our new series Navigating STEM, a multimedia series exploring how MBARI staff has found their way to ocean exploration as a career—and where they’re going from here.
In Emery’s words, “We have so many questions, and if we only have one or two or three people answering those questions or coming up with the ideas, we're maybe not capturing all of the different perspectives.”
“You're the person who's going to ask those questions and bring those new ideas to the table. And the world needs that, the world needs you and your perspective and what you bring.”
Making bold innovations in computer science and engineering once is remarkable. But to do it twice while pioneering the foundation of many computing methods and high-tech companies is revolutionary. And that’s exactly what the incredible @conwaylynn did. Lynn Conway is most known as a renowned computer scientist and co-author of the textbook “Introduction to VSLI Systems” – what started as a guide and became the future standard microprocessor and memory chip design. Very large-scale integration (VSLI) is a system used to create many circuits in a single piece of semiconductor as opposed to electronic components – allowing for smaller, cheaper, and more efficient microchip creation. This revolutionary work occurred when she restarted her career in “stealth mode” after her gender transition in 1968. Before this, Lynn had made major contributions to out-of-order dynamic instruction scheduling (DIS) in computers at IBM but was fired for being transgender. DIS is the basis that allows supercomputers to complete tasks out of the order it’s written in when it can be executed independently of other tasks. However, she was separated from this work for 30+ years simply for being who she is. As such, in addition to being the STEM superstar she is, Lynn Conway is also a fierce transgender activist. Celebrating International Women in Engineering Day

International Women in Engineering Day is this year on Sunday 23 June 2019 and IOM3 and Women in Materials group are celebrating on Friday 21 June with an event.
The one-day event, International Women in Engineering Day 2019 Event, will be hosted at IOM3 headquarters on 297 Euston Road, London.
The event is free to attend, with registration opening at 1.30 pm. The programme includes a keynote talk from IOM3 President and Professor of Materials Science at Cambridge University, Serena Best. As well as a keynote the day will host a career case study by Synvina, Netherlands, Project Leader, Elizabeth Eaves and a panel Q&A discussion. As well as the Friday event, IOM3 has also found and framed portraits of women in materials that will be hung up on the wall in the HQ staircase as a celebration.

My degree is over!?
Well, my degree is finished. Soon I'll graduate (in absentia) with a First Class Honours! In September I'll begin a graduate scheme at a big engineering company, so I guess this will turn into more of a #gradblr than a #studyblr.
