Mingyu was quite literally on his knees, pouting at you while you laughed. “It’s not funny! It’s a big deal!”
“I told you that it’s fine!”
“It isn’t!”
The two of you had been going back and forth like this for maybe ten minutes now. The moment that you came home and crashed on the couch, Mingyu was there in front of you, going quite dramatic compared to how he normally was. He’d pouted, and gotten down on his knees in front of you, already apologizing for something you hadn’t even. It had, admittedly, thrown you for a loop when he finally admitted what the big deal was: he, ultimately, forgot your birthday at first.
Not that it bothered you. With the late night that he had, he finally came home to you late last night and pretty much collapsed into bed. He’d woken you up when he came in, and exchanged a sleepy kiss as he settled into your arms, body as heavy as bricks with fatigue. It’d come to you as a surprise when he woke up this morning when you were leaving, long enough to steal a kiss from you and mention he made you lunch when he came home last night. No ‘happy birthday’ in any form, but you had chalked it up to the fact that he was barely conscious when you were physically there with him. He’d texted you hours later with a long, sappy message about how much he loved you and that he was going to make you your favorite meal tonight.
You had insisted that his forgetting was fine. Mingyu, however, heavily disagreed.
“I’m supposed to be your boyfriend,” he pouted, cheek pressing against your thigh. “It’s my duty to be the first one to tell you happy birthday.”
You had quelled your laughs, despite the way his pout (like a kicked puppy) almost brought them back up. “My parents would disagree.”
“One of the first!” He said, lifting his head to frown at you again. He sighed, “Why didn’t you say anything this morning?”
You reached out, taking his face into your hands. “Gyu. You were barely awake. I really, really don’t care--”
“I saw Cheol at the store when I went grocery shopping,” he huffed, “and he gave me this smug look! He asked if I had ‘plans with the birthday girl’ and then made fun of me when I had to admit that I forgot and that was why I was getting groceries...”
“Oh, Gyu...”
He sighed again, “Wonwoo told me he was the first to text you this morning... I didn’t even do that until after he said something.”
“Mingyu,” you squished his cheeks a little, just to get his attention back on you, “I mean it. You worked late, and you work long hours.”
“I didn’t even put a note in your lunch,” he pouted. “How are you supposed to brag about me like you usually do if I don’t even do that?”
It earned another laugh from you, so full of love, followed by a quick kiss against his lips. “Lunch was delicious and I always get to brag about you during our break. It annoys Seungkwan a little, y’know.”
“I should have put a note,” he huffed, “I could have made them more jealous. I should have--”
You frowned again. “Mingyu... I mean it. It doesn’t bother me at all. I know you’re upset because you love me, but we’re busy people and you were exhausted when you came home this morning.” You ran a hand through his hair soothingly, letting out a sigh. “If it really bothers you so much, then you can make it up to me later. But... I can smell the delicious dinner my husband material boyfriend made for me,” you cupped his cheek with a giggle, “and I’m pretty sure it’s getting cold now...”
Mingyu sighed, slowly rising up to his feet and staying before you. He offered his hands out to you, and, with ease, tugged you so you were standing in front of him. Yet he didn’t move right away, instead choosing to linger there with you for a moment longer. “I mean it,” he said, “I’m sorry I forgot. I love you,” he leaned in, lips capturing your own for a short moment. When he pulled away, he found himself smiling at the pretty way the lights seemed to reflect in your eyes. Or maybe it was you glowing with love for him as you always did. “Happy birthday, my love,” he cupped your face, pressing one final kiss to the crown of your head. “I’ll make it up to you after dinner.”
