Book Review #94 of 2025--

Wool (Omnibus) by Hugh Howey. Rating: 3.5 stars.

Read from December 2nd to 20th.

Since this was published in parts, I decided to read a section from the omnibus after each book I finish this month. It was funny because the first section is so short and the final section is about five times as long as the first. There was also some delay since I was up visiting my family this week. This was a good read for the most part. I found that it wasn't as enjoyable as the show is for me.

I think the only reason I felt settled into this world is that I've seen both seasons of the show. Otherwise, there's not nearly enough world building or development of characters for this story to feel well fleshed out. It makes sense at the beginning when each section is less than 100 pages, but as the sections get longer it really starts to feel like it should have had a better start. I found Lukas to be a more annoying character than he is in the show. It always felt like he would go whichever the way the wind was blowing. He developed more of a back bone towards the end when his own life was in danger. And I thought the Juliette character wasn't nearly as good as the show. It might just be that the actress is that good on the show. (Also, Walk being a man threw me for a second. The Walk on the show was just better.)

There were some aspects of the story that were new to me and that I really enjoyed learning about. The communication systems between silos was fun to see and learning about how many there were and possibly why they were created just got me questioning so many things. I'm really interested to see where the story goes from here. It features so many dystopian things I've enjoyed in the past. The book dives into themes about power, control, and knowledge while letting the characters breathe life into them.

This is sort of a start to the reading challenge I'm doing in 2026. I'll be reading books that have movie or tv show adaptations and then watching the adaptations.
