Gallen 21: staring into each other’s eyes

“Sit.”

Gally raised an eyebrow at the boy smiling innocently withhis legs tossed on either side of the hammock. He regretted thinking about howboth of them sitting on the thing could end up, such thoughts did not belong inhis mind, though they had a tendency to wander in from time to time, they werenot meant to stay.

The boy sat hesitantly on the side, earning a crooked grinand an over exaggerated eye roll from the boy beside him. Ben picked Gally’sleft leg up and swung it over the other side of the hammock, much to Gally’ssurprise. Now facing each other, Ben’s smug grin deepened which only worriedGally more. He knew Ben, the boy was shameless and sometimes not entirely awareof boundaries. Everyone had gotten used to it by now, though it didn’t particularlyhelp keep those thoughts out of his mind.

“What’s this about?” Gally inquired with a nervous smile. Thoughthere was enough room for them to sit a comfortable distance apart, they wereboth subconsciously sliding closer towards each other.

“Nick told me that looking into someone’s eyes for twominutes without looking away increases your trust in them or something.” Benreplied with a smile that could’ve been playful, but also could’ve just been Ben.

Gally snorted, “Don’t already trust me enough?”

Ben cocked his headand raised his eyebrows with a sarcastic shrug, earning a chuckle from the boyacross from him. With a satisfied smile, he eyed his watch momentarily beforebringing his gaze back to Gally’s.

“Okay, go.” He said. Gally blinked and looked away withoutthinking. Ben hit his arm and squealed his name. Gally apologized through hisgiggles. Gally had a good sense of humor, it wasn’t hard to make laugh on agood day, even easier to earn a chuckle from him, but there were only a handfulof people that could make him giggle.Ben was one of those people.

So they started over. And then one of them would mess up. Andstart over. And if you’ve never tried looking into someone’s eyes for so long,you wouldn’t believe how impossible it was. They both kept erupting in burstsof giggles or felt awkward and physically couldn’t do it anymore. But eventuallythey managed to stay still and just gaze. Both of them looked like they were ina trance, the slight adjustments in eyebrows and mouths that would’ve been completelyunnoticeable in any other situation but they were both hyperaware of each otherand they both felt blood flowing quickly to their cheeks at different times,leaving the other having to only guess what thoughts had sparked the reaction.

Nick was right. Neither of them knew if it was trust theywere feeling for each other but they were both definitely feeling somethingthey hadn’t been before. Another thing neither of them knew was happening washow they were both steadily leaning closer to each other.

They probably could’ve stayed like that for longer, but oncetheir noses touched they were both brought back to reality and upon therealization of just how close their faces were, they both practically jumpedbackwards with flushed faces.

They tried to laugh it off, awkwardly making jokes about ituntil the words had diminished to mere “yeah,” “yeah.” ‘s. They never actuallyspoke about it, but it wandered into both of their minds every now and then.
