it’s not something a person is so much as a mode they’re in

it’s a coping thing that anyone can slip in and out of based on psychological wounds of the moment, or excruciating pain, grief events etc. To talk about it divorced of the grief, loneliness, or shame that can precede it… is almost impossible.
