A question about Queens
I was asked if I could explain the Queens a little more by a reviewer. This is a good question so I’ll see if I can fill it in.
The Queens are in a way throw backs to an era when there was a greater difference between male and females. Before the mothergrubs and the lusus arrangement. For the trolls, a time forgotten.
But what it means is that there are female trolls, a crossed the spectrum, who are born with the ability to lay eggs like a mothergrub. Because of their size they can only have a few eggs at a time and the incubation period before they lay them is a couple months.
This is not comfortable, and it takes a toll on the body. Much as pregnancy does in humans. But since the grubs are laid and not born, they can finish their growth to hatching in the eggs outside the body, meaning there is less stress.
So the queens take the material into themselves, they then basically mix it with their own genetics which is half inert. Just not fully, thus why their personal genetics do influence any eggs they lay but their survival rate is better.
The biggest difference is that a Queen having smaller clutches of less than a half dozen eggs at a time means that their bodies sort the genetic material and only use the strong material. Which means that all the grubs born from a Queen’s clutch has a higher chance of survival.
A Mothergrub’s clutch is often hundreds if not thousands of eggs. Their personal genetics have zero influence and they can continue working with very little in the way of breaks. How they sort the material is very different. Instead of only laying eggs with strongest genetics, they sort their clutches into groups. Those with the poorest genetics, thus the ones most likely not going to even hatch. Those with the better, who gets a 50/50 chance, and those with the best, who have the best chances. Because their personal genetics do not get involved means that the caste of a mothergrub before entering the lusus state will not matter (though noted by the Highblood prior, for some reason Mothergrubs are only from Jade lines, most Queens then going lusus state become dragons. WHO are also among the only fertile lusus. So a Queen’s fertility lasts pretty much her entire life from puberty on.)
While the trolls could get by with only the Mothergrubs, the Queens give an important standing of diversity and ensuring a few smaller clutches of very strong grubs. A Queen’s grub are bigger, stronger, and tend to show more intelligence and greater mental abilities.
Overtime because of their rareness (for every few thousand trolls only a half dozen may be Queens) they are kept near the Mothergrubs. Originally as attendants and then over time they came to get their own positions among the trolls. While still baby factories, they have been given a position of great respect. Which helps cover for the fact that a Queen can be born in any caste.
Espeically with the lower bloods, like the maroons, browns, and yellows who from traditional caste order were little more than slaves, giving a Queen a position that is high enough second only to the care of the Mothergrubs and the Empress means that no one can try and claim a Queen for their own personal use. It gives them a freedom outside the caste system.
