Your Fantasy Map Has a Fuel Problem
1 World Building Geology
Climate, Weather, Biology, Time, Rock:
Despite the label this covers the full space the story takes place in, from the planet we live on to the space between stars. The Game Pilot might not need to deal with everything, especially if it’s on a planet without a space-faring society.
A planet is built from two sources. On one hand dust and water get together, sit on each other, and make mud. That mud then falls to a planet building its mass by the ton, sometimes every century, sometimes every day. Might we refer you to reports of massive bombardment of the Canadian shield from space during the Gothenburg Magnetic Excursion even? The Columbia Scablands, the coolie and finger lakes, the English Channel? That might have taken a day to happen and a month to settle. On the other hand, a planet sits on a plasmoid, which also builds material, and might even modify any material that comes into contact with it. While I’m at it, the stars within that star system will also create material. Electrical arcing can create every material known on the periodic table, limited to the amplitude and duration of the arc. The planetary plasmoid will also work to shape that planet into a sphere. Might never be happy with the effort. While the rock itself might move around, jostling continents and lifting mountains, that plasmoid will be electrically grinding it until there’s nothing to work on.
Though influenced by galactic forces, the stars within a system will drive all climate within their domain. Climate on a planet will receive that energy and distribute it according to more localized conditions. Where weather is a fractal instance of climate, weather in turn results from nature seeking to balance energy systems within a domain. Where the climate on a planet might be rather warm, like the Holocene Optimum about six millennia ago, weather can seem steamy and mild. Trouble is when the energy leaches out and the climate cools, all the water once held in the atmosphere will come raining down. Someone remembers it taking about forty days for that to happen.
Life seems to be inevitable. The basics might have been build in the atmosphere of a brown dwarf, like what Saturn used to be. Yet it took an invasion of a more diverse environment to raise it from simple aminos and proteins to living beings.
If it can pursue pleasure and avoid unnecessary suffering it has mind. Mind is a fractal instance of soul, where the parts are similar to the whole, which in turn is part of a larger whole.
Life can alter the environment of a planet to radical degrees. Once upon a time Earth had an anaerobic atmosphere loaded with iron that would be toxic to life as we know it. Then a little chlorophyllic critter comes along and converts the air into something we can breath, which washed all the iron out of the atmosphere and froze the planet into a snowball. It might have taken half-a-billion years for us to figure it out. We might add that we are still tweaking the system.
Life can alter atomic structures. Is that why there is so much calcium on earth? That calcium became bone, which became limestone, and some became marble, which became temples of glory and fear. Is shale the fossil of microbial mats that once, nay, still dominate the planet from the highest mountain to the deepest rock and even our digestive track?
We might add that it looks like evolution, while as inevitable as life itself, is an interactive activity that really does take the whole community to shape.
Oh, for the Game Pilot, we might offer than life need not land on a rock the size of Mars, or even Pluto, to fire up a biom.
Might we offer the Game Pilot a tour of a place called the Richat Structure? Imagine twelve millennia ago Mauritania is a lot wetter, maybe even a lot lower in altitude, and at a different latitude. (Entertaining the theory of crust displacement, here.) Surrounded by the Sahara Bayou the structure is foundation to one of the most advanced civilizations known to earth. Review, if you can, Plato’s description of Atlantis, and note how the geology and topology of the Structure pares well. I might note that the Aorounga Structure just east in Chad, and the Chicxulub Structure farther to the west on the Yucatan, share the same general structure, differing in size. We won’t say these structures were built by Atlas, King of Atlantis. They might have been left by a magnificent storm to have hit this planet and ended the Cretaceous eon. And then Atlas comes along and “Wow, this would make a very good harbor for trade.”
