In light of current events, I'm here to explain the difference between supporting a country in a conflict or supporting its policies and being interested in a country. When people at my school hear that some of my main countries of interest are Russia, China, and Israel, they look at me like I'm some kind of modern-day baby-killer. They think I'm either ignorant or I support these countries' mistakes. But I know perfectly well that the high-ups in these places are doing some f-ed up stuff, and am in no way supportive of either of them. Even Israel, the land I am supposed to be loyal to is really screwing up in my opinion. I don't even care if they are victorious anymore, even though I am a Zionist, because I just want the conflict there to stop. I could rant about that, but it's not what this post is about. But, I still love Israel because I know that the government and military are not the everyday people. They're opinions may be louder, but they are still the exception, not the rule. I feel like right now China is a good example of this whole louder-but-smaller idea. Why do you think they use tear gas and rubber bullets? If China's everyday, garden-variety citizens (including Hong Kong, since it is technically a part of China) supported their government's attack on Hong Kong's democracy, Hong Kong would have already yielded to the rest of China. But, like I said before, people in support of this atrocity are the exception, not the rule. If there were as many people supporting the political change as there were people protesting, police wouldn't use riot gear against peaceful protesters. Where am I going with this? The PEOPLE and CULTURE are not the same as the GOVERNMENT'S MISTAKES. I'm not saying these issues don't exist, I'm saying that they don't define the rich cultures around the world. The LGBT laws and relations with Ukraine are not right, and I do not support them, but I'm not going to stop learning Russian and being intrigued by the average person's customs. I'm still going to admire Moscow's buildings, watch the Mariinsky ballet, and make kasha for dinner one evening, but that doesn't mean I support robbing people of human rights. I think China has been a political train wreck longer than any other nation, but that doesn't make Mandarin (another language I refuse to stop learning) some kind of devil's tongue. So, next time someone says "Oh, I really want to go to Israel," or "I've always wanted to learn Mandarin!" that doesn't mean they want innocent people arrested or dead. It means that they are intrigued by the culture.
