How different would your life be if you couldn’t read? If you didn’t know how to write? Think about how you would communicate with and perceive the world around you. Think about how much you would miss. Opportunities, education, awareness of self and culture--even your memes! All depend greatly upon your ability to read or write.
We, as a worldwide society, have made significant progress towards complete literacy, but there are still millions who remain illiterate , two-thirds of whom are women. More than half of the global illiterate population is located in South and West Asia, followed by the 24% located in sub-Saharan Africa, making it harder for these particular parts of the world to improve.
The World Literacy Foundation is working to eradicate illiteracy by striking it at the source. They have served as a key voice on the UNESCO high-level round table committee for Literacy, established programs all around the world to target illiteracy, and have pioneered new ways to hit the issue hard in a world that is constantly adapting to improvements in technology.
The World Literacy Foundation was founded on several basic principles – education is a basic human right, too many people around the world don’t know how to read or write, and that literacy is the foundation to learning. Since its establishment as a not-for-profit in 2003, the World Literacy Foundation has steadily grown to align with the needs of a continually evolving educational sector.
Literacy improves life. Education is a basic human right. Please help the World Literacy Foundation meet their goals by reblogging this post. If this post has the most notes by Friday, June 5th then Tab for a Cause will donate $1000 to the World Literacy Foundation!
tl;dr - Like and reblog this so that a good foundation will get funding. Also, go sign up for Tab for a Cause. Seriously. Why haven’t you done that yet?
