The Mighty Storm Jormungandr

Jörmungandr Can “

Jörmungandr means “large monster” but right now he’s just a little monster. #worldserpent #norsemythology #mythology #babymonster #cute #illustration #childrensillustration https://www.instagram.com/alexgrey.illustration/p/BxESOKEhFDL/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=fr5z84t7m7jt
Yggdrasil, or “World Tree,” is a central feature of Norse mythology. The World Tree houses all nine of the mythological Norse realms, and several mythological creatures occupy its branches. My artwork here shows Thor, the thunder god, battling his nemesis the “World Serpent” Jörmungandr. Thor and the world serpent do battle in the cataclysmic Ragnarök where they kill each other in their final battle. celtichammerclub.com ➖ #celtichammerclub #yggdrasil #worldtree #thor #jormungandr #worldserpent #jormungand #ragnarok #norse #nordic #viking #vikings #mythology #mythological #ninerealms #magic #heathen #asatru #originalart #timelapse #procreate https://www.instagram.com/p/Bx4fvMEHbRr/?igshid=1grdmmno2q2kz

“Thor Fishing for Jormugandr” Original art inspired by the style of Howard Pyle.
Thor’s nemesis was the World-Serpent, Jormagandr–a sea serpent so large that it encircled the entire world. When Thor went fishing with the giant Hymir, the giant warned him against sailing too far, since the venomous serpent lurked beneath the waves. Thor, however, wanted exactly that, and so he baited his line with an ox head and cast it into the sea. Soon, the sea began to boil as Jormugandr emerged from the waves, Thor’s hook in his jaw. Thor reached for his hammer, but Hymir, fearful of both the serpent and the possiblity that their battle would start Ragnarok, cut the line, and Jormugandr sunk back beneath the waves. This piece was inspired by the great American Illustrator Howard Pyle, who is probably best known for his pirate illustrations. This piece was inspired in particular by his painting “Attack on a Galleon.”
