Happy World Whale Day! 🐋

Head over to MBARI’s Soundscape Listening Room to celebrate these glorious giants. In the Soundscape Listening Room, you can access a live stream and a library of sounds—both recorded using a hydrophone (underwater microphone) off Central California. Tuning in at any time, you might hear whales, dolphins, sea lions, boats, rain, wind, earthquakes, and other sounds.

You can also use Alexa to tune into the sounds of the ocean! Check out the Listening Room on our website.

I’m a zoology student, currently working on my dissertation. If you’re 18+ years old, I would really appreciate it if you could participate in my questionnaire about cetacean-based (whales, dolphins and porpoises) tourism interests. Happy World Whale Day! 

Every year on February 16, conservationists and animal lovers alike come together to celebrate World Whale Day. 

Founded in 1980, this international day of observance serves to raise awareness about the ongoing need to protect our world’s whale populations.

Whales are so incredibly important to our Earth’s ecosystems as they play an integral role in balancing the food chain and ensuring certain species do not overpopulate the world’s oceans.

However, these animals are threatened by a number of human-related activities like pollution, ship collisions, and even hunting. Despite a ban on commercial whaling in 1986, whales still face slaughter–most notably off the coasts of Japan.
