This is my starting point. The first stage is a delicate process. To put the gilded pieces in a box with a couple of hard boiled eggs. The sulphur will begin to slightly discolour the silver. This process will only work on genuine silver. Not on aluminium Dutch Metal Leaf. Then the colours in the patina will guide the decoration. In my mind I can already see it but I will allow myself to take detours. Ever since the time I began making a serious effort at being an artist I’ve learned a lot about myself. That was the whole point anyway, to find out who I am as a person. Along with that, I’ve also learned a great deal about the creative process. Not so much techniques, although I have learned much there too, but the purposes of what I’m doing. For example, I’ve come to the conclusion that the artworks that give me the most trouble, that put up the most fight, that do not go along with the process, end up being my best works. My favorite works. I never knew why that was or why I am to struggle with a work in order to get the reward of it. I now understand that it is part of the process of finding out who I am. I am treading into areas I don’t usually go, and this is where I will find out the most. ~ Currently, these two paintings are giving me the most resistance. I can tell that they are going to be something good when they come out of the chaotic state they are in right now. Today I will continue the dance with them, let’s see what happens.
