‘Ale,’ Alexia heard your small voice and turned her head towards her bedroom door that you had slowly opened, just enough to poke your head through the gap.
‘Pequeña,’ You smiled and slipped through the small gap when Alexia had sat up fully and tapped the spot next to her on her bed.
Alexia wrapped an arm around you, bringing you in for a small hug when you sat next to her. You enjoyed being around your older sister, with her football responsibilities increasing over the years, you enjoyed the little moments you could still have with her.
‘Ale…’ You started, your smile had turned into a cheeky grin and your eyes shifted towards the door for a moment. Though with how you were facing Alexia couldn’t see the change, ‘You know you are mi hermana favorita, sí?’ Looking up towards Alexia, she noticed the gleam in your eyes all too well.
‘Oh? Sí?’ Alexia hummed, her eyebrow slightly raising and her lips slowly curling into an amused smirk.
‘Mhm, even more than Alba,’ You leaned in close to Alexia’s ear, whispering, like you were telling her your biggest secret. Trying to act all serious and not break your facade.
‘Pequeña?’ If you weren’t focusing so hard on trying to get what you want you would’ve heard the slight breathy laugh Alexia let out.
‘Shh don’t tell Alba, promesa?’ You held out your pinky and Alexia shook her head slightly, but went along with it and linked her pinky around yours.
‘Promesa pequeña,’ Alexia smiled, lifting your connected fingers to kiss yours, you let out a little giggle, one that always warmed your older sister's heart to hear, ‘Now what do you want?’ Alexia poked at your sides, making you laugh more.
‘Mi hermana favorita take us to get ice cream, por favor?’ You spoke between your little laughs, looking at Alexia with wide pleading eyes. Only you could make your eyes so wide and only you could make Alexia do whatever you wanted. You were the youngest, and as Alba would say, it automatically makes you the cutest and most tolerable to the oldest.
‘Ice cream?’ Your eyes lit up cheekily, a big smile and you squirmed out of Alexia’s arms
‘Sí! Gracias Ale!’ Alexia rolled her eyes when you opened the door fully rushing out before Alexia could say no, even if she never actually agreed. Alba, having been on the other side listening in, stumbled into you slightly, ‘Alba! Alba! Ale taking us ice cream!’ You rushed out, Alba looked past Alexia and smirked. She’d sent you in to ask Alexia, knowing she’d never say no to you and that the three of you would be going to get ice cream that afternoon.
‘Stop using her against me,’ Alexia narrowed her eyes at her younger sister, playfully nudging her when she walked past, the two of them following you out of the house.
‘Not my fault you’re weak,’

‘Alba, stop,’ You tried to push against your older sister, even though you were a little older now, you were still a lot smaller than both your sisters, ‘it won’t work like it used to,’ You whisper shouted, the two of you in the hallway just outside the living room where Alexia was watching some match replay.
‘No, you’re still Ale’s pequeña, even if you are a moody teen now,’ Alba tried to reason, but was met with a roll of your eyes and you crossing your arms. Alba still believed you could get anything you wanted from Alexia, being the youngest. But you were unsure, you were thirteen now, not eight like you used to be when Alba could convince you and get you to test and push Alexia’s limits.
From watching other families where the youngest always got what they wanted and asked for, Alba had learnt to use that to her advantage, even if it was getting harder the older you got, ‘Get us what we want,’ A final push from Alba when you were caught off guard had you stumbling through the doorway.
‘Dios mío,’ You grumbled under your breath, trying to regain your balance, a flush over your cheeks when you realised Alexia was staring at you now, ‘Hola Ale,’ You awkwardly smiled, rubbing your arm, slipping into the seat next to Alexia.
‘What do you want, pequeña?’ Alexia raised her eyebrow, looking at you. You frowned, faux disbelief and offense spreading across your face.
‘Qué?’ Playing into the dramatics, you placed your hand against your chest, ‘Can I not want to spend time con mi hermana favorita?’ Alexia’s eyes narrowed, you only used that on both your sisters when you wanted something. Alexia being on the receiving end more times than Alba ever has.
‘It’s been a while,’ Your tone shifted, it might have been low for you to target Alexia’s guilt to get what you want. But it was the truth. The more your older sister’s lives began to become more their own, the less time they were around and the less you got to see them.
Alexia’s eyes softened and she wrapped her arm around you, ‘Lo sé,’ Even if Alexia was the oldest, she was still young and it was easy to let herself get caught up in football. She was still learning how to juggle it all, how she could be a good sister to both you and Alba while meeting the expectations and demands that came with her blossoming career.
‘Ice cream?’ You mumbled into your sister's shoulder, having returned the hug she had pulled you into, ‘You, me, Alba, just like we used to,’
‘Sí, come on,’ Whatever Alexia had been doing she was happy to abandon to spend time with her sisters, they’d always be more important anyway.
‘You still got it pequeña,’ Alba patted you on the back when you and Alexia walked into the hallway together, where she had been waiting knowing that Alexia would yet again give in to you.
‘Before I change my mind,’ Alexia rolled her eyes while shaking her head, walking right past her two younger sisters, not waiting for them to catch up.

‘I’m blaming you,’ Alexia groaned, watching you run around, chasing birds and trying to get your older sisters, who were sitting back trying to peacefully eat their own ice creams, to play with you. By play you just meant run around in circles.
‘Ay! I’m not the one who let her get ‘chocolate, chocolate y más chocolate’,’ Alba recalled your exact words when Alexia had asked you what ice cream you wanted on the walk to the shop.
‘Pero, who used our baby sister to get the ice cream?’
‘No sé what you are talking about Ale,’
Alba was watching amused, until you grabbed her hand and forced her to play with you. Alexia was just hoping you would tire yourself out so she wasn’t returning home with you still on a sugar high. They all returned home later that afternoon with you still bouncing off the walls.
‘You remember that Ale?’ Alba laughed out, retelling her favourite memory of the three of here, ‘Mami was so mad at you,’
‘Mad at both of us,’ Alexia corrected, remembering the look your mami gave the two older girls, both of them knowing better at the time.
‘At you,’ Alba insisted, ‘You’re the oldest,’ She shrugged and you copied her, nodding along, agreeing with Alba. The both of you laughing at the huff Alexia let out.
‘Why I put up with you…the two of you…’ Alexia shook her head
‘Eh you love us Ale,’ You leaned your head on your older sister's shoulder, Alba doing the same on the other side. You both looking up at Alexia in the same way, with the same expression.
Alexia sighed, a kiss to both your foreheads, ‘Unfortunately,’

The memories you recounted felt a lifetime away now. You sat outside the ice cream shop you and your sisters would always go to together, remembering all the laughs, tears and moments that were shared there, the three of you. Instead now you sit there alone, swirling your ice cream around in the cup, thinking about how long it’s been since either of your sisters visited.
You were proud of them and the lives they were building for themselves. You always looked up to them and hoped to one day be just like your older sisters. In your eyes, they were and still are the best references you could have. So you sat with the guilt of feeling like they were leaving you behind. You missed them both, but you didn’t know if they missed you.
A little yap and a nudge at your hand brought you back to reality and out of the spiral your thoughts were sending you into. You smiled, scooping some of your ice cream to share with Rio. When your sisters both eventually moved out, your mami had let you get a dog. A way to distract from how empty your childhood house suddenly felt with the absence of your older sisters. It helped to an extent.
You tried to push away the negative feelings you got, especially when not far from you there was a group of girls, sisters it seemed, that reminded you of you, Alexia and Alba when you were younger. Instead you smiled, Rio taking most of your ice cream while you watched the group, imagining it to be you and your sisters.
Before Rio could demolish what was left of your ice cream you quickly took out your phone, taking a photo of your ice cream, Rio and the ice cream shop all together. You quickly pulled up the group chat you had with Alexia and Alba.
‘Telling Rio about all the times we had here, showing him the best ice cream in the world, just like Alba always said. I miss you both, te quiero mucho x’
You almost sent the message. Until the date and time of the last messages in the chat caught your eye. What was once a lively chat shared between sisters, had gone dry, an ache spread across your chest when you realised…you can’t remember the last time your sisters had properly talked to you.
