can i ask a question?? ((asks anyway lol but feel free to delete)) what is your environment like when you write?? like do you have classical music playing?? are you seated at a desk? are you at a random starbucks banging out chapters of your amazing fics??? i’m dying to knowww
YOU CAN'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO, I AIN'T DELETING SHIT, I LOVE THIS ASK aaaaanyway haahahahhha ahem...enclosing way more details than you actually asked for below, my most beloved anon <3
I have two writing setups. Here's the first.
SETUP #1:
Desk. Home office. Two monitors. Desk positioned so I face the door with my back to the wall. NO ONE can look over my shoulder. Candle burning, scent usually themed to my project (if I can swing it). I am surrounded at all times by copious amounts of anime figures, and I'll move one of them to my desk if I have a figure of a character I'm writing about.
Monitor 1: Scrivener file.
Monitor 2: A hodgepodge of random images of whoever/whatever I'm writing about so I can look at them while pausing and soak in some thematic vibes. When writing the latest Queen Sacrifice chapter, Monitor 2 looked like this:
i still had the images up from last nights editing marathon lololol
Minimized on Monitor 2: YouTube absolutely BLASTING some kind of ambient music themed to whatever I'm writing, plus a grey/white/brown noise track layered on top. Vocals are NOT ALLOWED on the tracks. Over-ear headphones.
Once I have achieved Maximum Writing Vibes, I lock my goddamn door and don't emerge for 6-8 hours.
SETUP #2:
Hunched over a laptop balanced on my knees and taking advantage of the spare 15 minutes I have between navigating airport security and boarding my next flight for work. No headphones, no candles, no nothin'. We're just raw-doggin' the inspo while I chug sugar-free Redbull baybeeeeeeeeee.
tysm for the ask ilysm <3
First part of my new tiny writing area is set up!!!!! Awaiting parts two and three 🩷
The WIP project - setup
Hello writerly friends!
We were talking a bit about how writing happens today and I got to wonder. How do we know that the way we do that is the only way that works for us? Maybe there’s other ways of getting the words to flow?
See, I need silence to write. That’s a fact, right? But is that even true?
Another fact is, that I’m most effective when I go to my knitting friend’s place and write there. Then, I’m not even bothered by music running in the background, although I prefer it to be music in a language I don’t understand. I also wrote at the library a while back, just me, my phone, my bluetooth keyboard, and people I didn’t even know walking around. I think settings like this work well, because I feel like I’m under observation. I can’t fuck around with other shit, someone will see! That also worked well back when I had to study for Uni.
So, is it silence, or is it companionship, or is it observation? Maybe all of these are true. If the same thing would work every day, I would be a machine. I think it’s better to be adaptable, to find positives in every setting for writing.
I would love to hear how you guys write. Do you have a preferred setup? A place/situation where the words flow best? Have you tried that parallel play approach of writing while someone else does something on their own? Let us know!

What’s great about my new writing space is that it’s surrounded by all these things that can easily distract me

Do you have an ideal writing setup? (Music, font, writing program, setting?)
I have an ideal setup, but I almost never use anything close to it XD
My ideal, "What I wish my writing setup was like" consists of the following:
Sitting at a writing desk
A warm beverage, preferably tea or a tea latte
Probably gonna need a drink warmer set up because I always forget to drink lol
In the evening, all chores and distractions done with for the day
Dim lighting, such as a low lamp and/or candlelight
For drafting, my Alphasmart; for editing, Google Docs with a minty-green background to help reduce stress
The notebook for my current WIP within easy reach
Cat in lap
My actual writing setup is almost always sitting in my bed on Google Docs because I keep forgetting my Alphasmart exists lol. It's a really useful tool for first drafts, I just haven't worked on a first draft in a while and Google Docs is just easier to access, even though I'm not as productive drafting on it ;w;
