FELLINI’S SATYRICON AT EYE FILM INSTITUTE

You keep telling people you’ve seen all his movies so you should probably  check out the Fellini retrospective they have going on at the EYE Film Institute so you can stop lying. The eye is just across the canal behind central station, there’s a free ferry that will haul you over and bring you back. Tickets are 9.50 and the film starts at 4:30 in the afternoon.

NEMO SCIENCE MUSEUM: Phineas and Ferb Chain Reaction

This exhibition is super fun and you don’t need a lot of Dutch to do this. It’s a giant chain reaction, chairs smack cartons, rockets fly, water squirts: it’s great. Action and reaction. Go.

OVER THE IJ FESTIVAL: Remember the Good Times The Over the IJ festival has a million obscure things going on all over location on the IJ canal. A standout is REMEMBER THE GOOD TIMES/NDSM-werf: a unique collaboration between a travel guide platform and artists. The NDSM space was a shipbuilding wharf between 1894 and 1979. The building is still there and you get an app that guides you through a space that “opens doors that are normally locked.”

Keti Koti Festival 2013

It means “broken shackles”. Holland abolished slavery in Suriname and the Netherlands Antilles on July 1, 1863. So this festival commemorates that with live musical performances across four stages, a large parade with brass band and excellent Surinamese and Antillean food.

  MONDAY 18 March

The first Narcis’ are starting to peek through the ground, the Keukenhof is opening so why not visit those early spring blooms at the Amsterdam Tulip Museum?

The museum is in the Jordaan district, and it shares the fascinating story of the Tulip, which is, I assure you, way weirder than you ever imagined. Hint: Tulip Stock Exchange

 TUESDAY 19 March

The Greenbox Museum is an art museum, located near the Leidseplein, it focuses solely on the contemporary art of Saudi Arabia! Which is like WHAT???? AWESOME!

The Greenbox Museum’s name arose from a desire to stand out from all the other “bland white spaces”. Green also references the colour of the Saudi flag.... and other green things. Korte Leidsedwarsstraat 12 

Admission fee is € 5. Groups of more than 8 pay a fixed fee of € 40.

 WEDNESDAY 20 March

This is a local spot I would like to keep on the E.L. (E.L. is like the D.L.- but Even Lower) but bars only stay open while you’re drinking, so here you go. Café Mono rules. It’s a GREAT bar.

The DJ played, Bowie, Misfits, soul, metal and dance music. The bartender was like, the nicest lady ever, the prices are fair, the shots are generous, the website is hilarious, so check that out before you go. Cafe Mono, it’s at BilderdijkStraat 15. Promise me you’ll only take cool people. PROMISE ME!!!!!

If you walk around the Spui, there is a medieval door on the square that’s kind of hard to find. Behind that door is hidden square, with two churches, a garden and houses all around. This is the Begijnhof. This is a former cloister for Baguin nuns. The last nun, Sister Antonia, died in 1971.  Today, only women are still allowed to live there. It’s great to walk around. It’s quiet and lovely. A nice place to sit and enjoy the serenity on a sunny day. Find it if you can.  THURSDAY 21 March

Easter Season is starting and that means there are concerts all over the city for the next few weeks, such as and including the famous Bach piece MATTHÄUS PASSION (St Matthew’s Passion) at the world famous Concertgebouw.

The concert itself is just €22.50, during the intermission you can enjoy a glass of Moët et Chandon Brut Impérial champagne in the Concertgebouw Café for €7.50…order 10 to show the rest of your row that you’re a BALLER, Son!

The Keukenhof Gardens are opening this Thursday the 21st. The Keukenhof Gardens in Lisse are the world’s largest flower gardens. From 21 March to 20 May 2013, the Keukenhof Gardens will burst into a kaleidoscope of colours as the gently rolling grounds are carpeted with blooming flowers.

Pretty much every tour goes there, but if you can absolutely go on your own.

There are some amazing venues in this town and I love the folks at Pacific Parc for everything they do and tonight, they’re doing The Grannies. The Grannies are a San Francisco based rock-n-punk band that plays dressed up as old women. I’m serious, and oddly, so are they, kinda.

There are 3 bands on the bill, The Brave from Utrecht and The Hickoids from Austin, Texas. I’m 99% sure that all the shows at Pacific Parc are free. See you there!

FRIDAY 22 March

At Cafe Pak Huis Wilhelmina they got a thing going, they get one member from four different bands, drummer from this band, bassist from this band, etc, they learn a set of songs from a classic band and they perform them. It’s simple, it’s brilliant and I love it. This week it’s Queen.

It’s €7.50 and it starts at 10:00 pm. Cafe Pak Huis Wilhelmina is walking distance from Central Station.

Go see Queen. C’MON PEOPLE!!! In this town of endless festivals here comes the Food Film Festival The Food Film Festival hits Amsterdam's Studio/K from 22 to 24 March 2013 for three scrumptious days of films about food. 

The Food Film Festival presents an enlightening selection of documentaries, shorts and feature films related to food, nutrition, sustainability, gastronomy and connoisseurs of all varieties. The festival is aimed at an international audience, so there are plenty of films and activities for non-Dutch speakers.

Or maybe you lower your brow a whole lot and go see Rambo, First Blood Part 2 at Uitkijk Theater. It's racist, it's stupid, it's violent, it's practically a hour and a half episode of Itchy and Scratchy. 11pm, 9 bucks, cheap beer.

Saturday the 26th

Lindengracht Market in the Jordaan Shop with the locals, get some bread, some cheese, a cheap bike lock and try to blend in. Starts at 9, go at 10, free

One Planet Kitchen - a pop up restaurant that uses only local, sustainable food to create delicious vegetarian meals, will be featuring dishes from the Czech Republic at Club Lite. With drinks and dancing to follow. Dinner limited to 40, sign up on their Facebook Page, this will sell out.

Sunday the 27th

Artis- Oh, they'd put you in the zoo if they could see what you could do!! Take your animals to see the animals at the zoo, warm up at the butterfly exhibit, check out the lions and then look for extraterrestrials at the planetarium, learning, fun, togetherness! 

In the evening Swing down to Mulligans and get in on the Sunday night jam session. It's open to anyone and even if you can''t play a lick, the music is fantastic and the bartenders are cool.
