Aimee Mann ('Til Tuesday)
1000/10
admittedly i'm biased, being:
a huge fan of all things girl, interrupted
a huge fan of all things aimee mann
mentally ill
i’ve been obsessed with the concept album for the past few years, these are a couple of the songs (which in the show are sung by characters, with gorgeous arrangements that feature members of the ensemble as instrumentalists and on backing vocals):
cw: rather vague allusions to suicide (nothing graphic or explicit)
(side note: if you ever come to nyc, make sure to check out what’s playing off-broadway, off-off-broadway, etc… i do tend to love whatever i go see, whether it’s a flashy popular broadway show or something more niche, but i often find the niche productions more intellectually stimulating.)
my favorite lyrics from these two songs:
obsession || frankenstein by aimee mann

What About Love - 'Til Tuesday (1986)
the whole aimee mann/noel gallagher tangent is so deeply appealing to me like it's that weird, deeply anxious woman, finding herself alone in a country she associates with traumatic memories. and shes fixating and most likely fiercely projecting onto this nervous british guy that isnt even famous yet and she feels like their songwriting sensibilities are similar somehow. yet the two of them seem unable to understand each other (ie their argument over chord progression and the merits of musical education) probably on account of their cultural differences and the clashing nature of their respective traumas. just the contigencies of human connection. and she writes the most unhinged love(?) song about him that sounds like a murder ballad because she realised the part of her that idealised him was the problem and he laughs about it years later on a podcast with his shitty friend. and on that year they met aimee mann was a renowned lesbian icon and looked like that
