Flowering in midwinter in the warmth of a glasshouse the elegant and curious Brassia verrucosa (the warty Brassia, spider orchid) an epiphytic orchid native to Mexico, Central America. The younger flowers are scented and they open consecutively along the stem over a period of days, by the time the last ones are opening, the petals and sepals of the early flowers are a deeper colour.

The topiary Peacock Garden at Great Dixter, Sussex, UK, has low hedges of Symphyotrichum lateriflorum var. horizontalis (horizontal calico aster) a compact herbaceous perennial with small, narrow leaves and wide-spreading stems covered with sprays of tiny white-rayed flowers. This plant will thrive in a clay soil.
