since my return to tumblr I’ve been seeing a lot of ppl talking abt disabilities & I have one piece brainrot real bad so I figured I’d babble a bit
it took me a weirdly long time to realize that... Shanks is disabled??? like. he lost an arm. if the fan theory is correct, he lost his sword arm. and only after losing his sword arm did this man go on to become one of the four most powerful people on the seas.
and he’s not the only one!!! Crocodile’s missing a hand. Tashigi’s probably legally blind without her glasses, which she keeps fucking losing. Fujitora’s blind, Zolo’s sense of direction is so bad it probably qualifies as some sort of intellectual disability — hell, Whitebeard himself, Edward fucking Newgate, is on a ventilator for the entire time he spends on the page/screen. and yet.
none of these people are defined by their disability. Whitebeard is considered the strongest man in the world. Zolo is fucking Zolo. Fujitora’s an admiral, which is the only reason I’m calling him Fujitora in the first place. Tashigi is Smoker’s right-hand man. Crocodile is one of the first truly imposing villains the straw hats come across, and, oh yeah, still making himself relevant nearly a thousand chapters later. and Shanks... well, Shanks is one of the Four Emperors, a.k.a. legally classified as one of the four biggest threats to the current world order. he’s doing pretty okay for himself for a guy who visibly struggles to button his shirts.
it just makes me think. Oda has made a world where disability accommodations are... normalized. in a weird sort of way, but still. hell, this is a maritime setting — having a devil fruit power is a permanent disability, and yet people don’t hesitate to take them on. because everyone is just... used to accommodating them. can’t swim? don’t go overboard, keep someone on watch around the water, bathe with a friend. only one hand? that’s fine, that’s why you keep your first mate around. can’t see? we have superpowers for that. we can handle it. to paraphrase Usopp: you do what you can, and leave the rest to your crewmates.

This time, we're sorting by spoiler level (mild, moderate, major), and then grouping by timeline, to make things easier. (Timeline groupings are determined by the arc in which the last spoilers occur.) I'm also including emojis to indicate AO3 rating (🟢 General, 🟡 Teen and up, 🟠 Mature, 🔴 Explicit, or ⚪ Not Rated), approximate word count (🌒 under 1k, 🌓 1k–4k, 🌔 4k–10k, and 🌕 above), and ⚠️ presence or ✅ absence of Archive Warnings. Hopefully this will make things more navigable. (And as before, I'm marking AUs with asterisks, but giving no pairing or character information.) Word count indicators for ongoing fics are based on current word count, not projected word count.
Additional note: I prefer to err on the side of caution. Placement on this list is determined by the most serious spoilers involved, and then by the last point at which spoilers exist. So, for example, if a fic has major spoilers for an early arc, but moderate spoilers up to a much later arc, it will be categorized under Major Spoilers for that later arc, despite technically only having moderate spoilers for it.
Mild Spoilers
These are basically fine. Things like non-plot-twisty character introductions, island/arc names, basic worldbuilding concepts, etc. Normal people would not consider these fics to contain spoilers. As long as you've met all the major characters involved, you're safe (though you might be lacking context).

"You can't have any booze, mosshead," Sanji piped up, when Zolo didn't speak first.
Zolo hummed. "Damn. How will I survive."
"You will," Sanji assured him as Zolo looped an arm around his waist. "Hey, careful."
"Yeah, yeah." Zolo tucked his other arm below the first and settled his chin on Sanji's shoulder. "Don't want to take my finger off."
"Not with this knife," Sanji noted, only half paying attention. "I'd be better off with my chef's knife for that. This would do a better job of taking your eye out."
It was an observation, not a threat, but something about the way it sounded in that buttery voice made Zolo's breath catch. He settled his arms a little tighter around Sanji's waist and went quiet to listen.
