INTERROGATION: AVERY MAXWELL
What can you tell me about Riley Grey?
“Um,” Avery says, stalling as he thinks about the useful stuff the cop should know. “He was on student council with myself, my girlfriend Taylor, and this other girl, Leia. He was the treasurer and was really good about making sure we didn’t go over budget? Otherwise we didn’t really hang out with him, cause he was one of those obnoxious frat boys.”
“I know Taylor’s best friend, Joey Ames, has never gotten along with him, but Joey couldn’t hurt a fly,” Avery tells them, resting his hands on the metal table in front of him, palms up. “Not... Physically, at least. But that’s unrelated to this, I think.”
Where were you on the night of October 22nd?
Avery has to lean his head back to think, trying to remember anything about the 22nd. “Taylor and Joey and I were hanging out at the party. We all danced a lot.”
We know you were at the same party Riley was that night. Did you see him there?
“Um.” Avery knows that to keep Joey from getting arrested, he had to tell this cop what they were doing, but the fear that it would get back to Taylor, that this would ruin their relationship, almost wouldn’t let him. “I knew, like, in the back of my mind that Riley was there, but. Um.” Avery’s face grows red. “I was too busy making out with my girlfriend’s best friend to really pay attention. Sorry. Can you not tell Taylor?”
Who was he with? What was he doing? Who did he talk to?
“I’m assuming he was with the rest of his frat brothers, enjoying the party. But like I said, Joey and I were busy.”
When did he leave? Did anyone else leave around that time?
“I was busy having a gay panic while trying not to blurt out to my girlfriend that I’d just made out with her best friend, so I pretended to be sick and we left pretty shortly afterwards. That was at like. 10-ish? I don’t know what time Riley left.”
Is there anything else you’d like to tell me?
“I’m sorry that I wasn’t of more help. Riley was really hard to work with when he was on student council with us.”
