"When love is at its best, one loves so much that he cannot forget."
Rich, dark, encompassing. Three words to best describe the smell inside the café. Zero tilted his head and took in a deep breath, sighing contentedly on the exhale. The warm taste of coffee beans tinged the air and danced along his tongue. The bell on the door rung, alerting him to a new customer’s presence. He walked out of the back room, looking behind him, to be sure he’d closed everything up neatly. It was for this reason that Zero ended up at the counter with a cup in his hand before looking up to a very familiar face.
His eyes crinkled and his chest flushed with a warm sensation. “Shortie,” he said, barely containing his grin, “it’s been a while. I guess that’s what happens when you put an ocean between two people.”
Her eyes rolled, as was usual around Zero. “I thought I told you to stop calling me Shortie. Gab, Gabrielle, Mocha, all acceptable. And you always go for Shortie.” Still, her smile was fond and almost indulgent. It had been a long time, almost 10 years since she had seen him. Italy was her home, but even as startling as it was running into him in a coffee shop, somehow she felt something click, like she was where everything was right again.
Zero’s voice, asking her what she was ordering broke Gabrielle out of her thoughts, and she ran her eyes over the messy chalkboard menu behind him. The smears of yesterday’s specials were almost still visible, the new chalk just contrasting slightly more. Before she could make up her mind, he had walked away behind the counter, and was mixing a drink. He handed it to her, the cup reading Shortie and shot her a lopsided grin. “Dark coffee, with an extra shot of espresso, if I remember it right. I couldn’t remember your creams and sugars, but the station is over there” he told her, gesturing to the right. A line had formed behind her, and Zero returned to hospitable barista, taking their orders and handing out coffees at a phenomenal speed for being the only one working. He had a tendency to open the store alone, liking the peace in the mornings, and around 9 am when the rush really started was when Emily, a fiery redhead who didn’t really take crap from any customer, and Philip, a tall quiet guy who made the most delicate looking lattes in town, joined him at the store.
As if thinking her name had summoned her, Emily made her way through the door, slipping into the back room and pulling an apron over her clothing. A few stray curls were caught in the canvas loop at the top, and the bounced free as she ran her hand along it. She walked next to Zero, opening a second cash register, and hip checked him lightly, a grin playing across her face. “What’s got you in such a good mood today? I haven’t seen a smile like this on your face since the time Sophie drew an arrow heart on her arm with the word ‘dad’ in it, and told you she had tattoos too” Emily teased.
Zero stuck out his tongue, but his eyes betrayed him, glancing over at Gabrielle, and the friend she had walked in with. How odd, he’d almost forgotten she hadn’t come in alone. Emily followed his gaze, smirking as her eyes landed on Gabrielle as well. “It’s been a while since you mooned over someone Z. I didn’t peg you for the type to get all goofy over quiet little hipster looking writers.”
Zero pushed her, the hints of a crimson tinge playing at his cheeks, and he prayed she didn’t notice. “It’s not like that alright? She’s an old friend, and it’s just… it’s really nice to see her again.”
Emily clicked her tongue at him, filling a customer’s cup almost over the brim with foam in the process. “Whatever you say Z, but the last time you looked at a girl like that, well… I can’t even think of one besides your daughter.”
i feel as though everything happens in the dorms, as though the students of wishing well just cannot get enough of their own living space, or they're all allergic to sunlight. we have pizza parties, sex, od's, break ups, make ups, movie nights, dates, pillow fights, showers, everything in the dorm rooms. doesn't it get sickening?
"Missing someone gets easier everyday because even though you are one day further from the last time you saw them, you are one day closer to the next time you will."
