The Dregs as Theater and Debate Kids
Kaz is a policy debater 10000%
He and Jesper are a team
There's this sort of unspoken rule about how your clothes can't clash with your partner's
So Kaz calls Jesper the night before they leave for the tournament
"Jesper, what color tie are you wearing tomorrow?"
"The purple one, why?"
"Wrong answer."
Jesper shows up the next morning wearing the purple tie
Kaz: "Wrong answer."
And only they know what he's talking about
Kaz does Extemporaneous Speaking as an individual event
Which is pretty much giving a speech on a political topic that was given to you randomly with only 30 min to figure out what the hell you're talking about
And he kills it.
Nina does Dramatic Interpretation
Which is pretty much what it sounds like
And makes one of her judges very upset
"What? It wasn't my fault she started crying... but of it were, I would count that as a victory."
Jesper does Humorous Interpretation
And his performance is full of gay jokes
Some of the judges think it's hilarious
Most of them do not.
Inej gives an Oratory about domestic abuse
Wylan gives an Oratory on acceptance
Matthias gives an Informative speech on rethinking prejudiced values
When Inej is done, she steals info from random policy cases to relay back to Kaz and Jesper
"It's their fault if they leave their cases lying around."
Nina gets a ton of candy from the concessions table
Then the debating starts
Kaz is great at twisting their opponents' words against them
And Jesper is a surprisingly eloquent speaker
Their opponents try to accuse them of cheating.
"Prove it, I dare you."
"..."
"You can't."
Wylan shows up to one of their debates
And Kaz has to tell him to leave because he's distracting Jesper.
Inej debates Lincoln-Douglas
It's a debate over what's morally right
So prefect for Inej.
Kaz gets her to sneak into the tab room where the judges' ballots are counted
Competitors technically aren't allowed
But she gets in anyway
And she comes back with the number of rounds they all won.
For a while, everyone's just waiting to know who gets to move on to semifinals
Jesper and Wylan disappear
And EVERYONE knows where they went
Kaz and Jesper make it to semifinals
And they still haven't turned up
Kaz: "JESPER! WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU???"
When they get back, Jesper's stupid purple tie is undone and Wylan's hair is a mess
Kaz: "We're supposed to be there already."
Jesper: "Sems start in 10 min though"
Kaz: "I don't care."
Inej gets a glimpse of their opponents' case
And relays back as much as she can
And of course they win
Nina does really well with her Dramatic Interpretation.
And then the awards ceremony
Jesper make a bunch of bets on who he thought would win
So he keeps exchanging krudge with the group sitting behind them
Kaz keeps rolling his eyes
Wylan: "Jes, you're an idiot."
Jesper: "Yeah, but I'm your idiot."
*cue insane blush*
Wylan has to go on stage to accept an award for his oratory
And all of the dregs are super loud
And Jesper screams "THAT'S MY BOYFRIEND"
Wylan turns red and runs off the stage as quickly as possible.
Nina goes up to get an award for her Dramatic Interpretation
Jesper lost the bet with the guy behind them
Nina: "You bet against me? I was going to give you some of my victory chocolate, but not anymore."
Wylan: *whispers* "I'll still buy you chocolate."
Nina: "I have no clue what you just said, so I'm going to assume the worst."
Wylan: *blushes once more*
On the bus ride home, Kaz is that one kid who obseses over ballots the entire time
Nina and Matthias cuddle
And Wylan falls asleep on Jesper's shoulder
