‘You Are Not Alone’ - The X Factor Finalists 2009

Number one week ending 28th November 2009 for 1 week 

This was the 2009 version of the now-traditional X Factor charity single,a cover of the 1995 Michael Jackson original, which also reached the top spot. Unsurprisingly, this is pretty much paint-by-numbers X Factor - a slushy ballad cover, anguished singing, emotional video, dramatic key change. The chosen cause this year was Great Ormond Street Hospital, a hospital for very sick children in London, so it was very worthy. The most interesting thing now is watching the video back and spotting who is still vaguely famous - Jedward, Stacey Solomon, Olly Murs!

‘Hero’ - X Factor Finalists

Number one week ending 8th November 2008 for 3 weeks 

The winner’s single alone no longer enough, the X Factor now offered you the opportunity to buy a song recorded by the finalists of the series. Like the winner’s song, it was also a cover of a classic ballad, but this time proceeds went to charity, and in this case to war veterans charities - ‘Hero’ for the heroes, geddit? The Mariah Carey ballad is ripe for warbling and vocal gymnastics, and allows the X Factor losers their moment in the sentimental sun, but this is just a charity vehicle, empty and snoozeworthy with no real musical value.
