He was doing everything he could to avoid taking more pain medication, watching the clock tick by until he could do more. All it did was slightly nullify his aches, he could barely even talk even though there didn’t seem to be anything wrong with his throat.

It took him idly reaching out for his connection to Xerneas for him to realize that he felt nothing, and realize that might be part of what was happening. A cold chill ran down his spine, this was new and very eerie to him.

He reaches for his phone to text his friends. Maybe Dani or Serena knew something?

Joyeuse hovers silently before Dani, cloths folded behind her back. A single, violet eye stares at the woman, the woman whom Serena considers to be a sister to her. A powerful trainer in her own right, and someone that also has an Aegislash in her arsenal.

"I don't think I ever got to thank you. For taking care of Serena and protecting her." Especially when everything in Geosenge happened. Joyeuse left that much unsaid; she felt that her message got across anyways, without having to get specific. "I wish there was more I could have done." For everyone involved.

"You have my undying respect. In the future, should the need arise, you have my shield and my blade. And... maybe sometime, could me and Serena train with you and Durendal? Not that she doesn't do a good job, I- I just think it would be fun to work with another Aegislash. That opportunity isn't a common one, and I feel that I could learn a thing or two from Durendal too. I want to grow and get stronger." Not just for herself, but to better protect everyone around her.

"We could even learn some cool combos, in the event we have to fight side by side. Hit 'em where it really hurts and leave them reeling." No one was ever doing to die on her watch. Not ever again. "Just- let me know what you think, okay? I know Serena looks up to you and your team and... I do too."

Nathaniel did not want to have this meeting.

He had neither the patience nor the energy to spare. He’d endured several busy days in a row, business requests piling up. He would finish them — he always finished them — but they had exhausted him. And now he needed to tolerate Gabriel Hammond, who had neglected to pay him for his services.

Unwisely neglected to pay him.

Gabriel had rambled on about excuses over the telephone — typical of those who skipped payment. Something about his daughter; something about his wife; something about his job. Nathaniel had insisted they meet at the mansion. It was all a dreadful waste of time, really. Gabriel had been testing his patience long before he’d stepped into Nathaniel’s study.

As Nathaniel poured whiskey into two glasses, he spotted Gabriel leaning over his desk. Nathaniel realized he’d left a file open, something he’d been reviewing before their meeting. Sleeplessness was catching up to him. A careless mistake. But. Gabriel still had the audacity to try peeking at the papers.

Rude, Nathaniel thought.

Something snapped inside him. Something white hot and electric coursed through his veins. His tiredness fled in its presence. An inhale. One finger slowly smoothed over the side of the whiskey bottle; he focused on its coolness, on the slide in texture from glass to paper label, on the glimmer of liquid within. Sharp bitterness rose in his throat. He swallowed it.

By the time he set their glasses on the desk, Gabriel had sat back in his chair — feigning innocence — and Nathaniel had regained his outward composure. He settled himself in his chair across from Gabriel. His fingers tapped a slow rhythm on the desk, a faint smile fixed upon his face. “Comfortable, are we?”

Gabriel nodded. He rested one arm on the desk, much to Nathaniel’s chagrin. “Yes, thank you. So— about the payment. I— I still haven’t got it. I’m sorry. Just… trouble at work.” A nervous, weary chuckle left him. “A… a proper mix-up. Still getting it sorted.”

“Ah, a mix-up,” Nathaniel echoed quietly. He recalled the explanation as the latest excuse the man had provided over the phone. A weak excuse. “I see.” His whiskey glass sat untouched before him. His hands had strayed to a silver-plated letter opener, patterned with intricate vines. He turned it between his fingers absently. His thumb traced the flat edge of the blade.

Gabriel stared at the letter opener. “Right.” His voice had quieted. His face had paled in the warm lighting of the office. He swallowed hard, and his focus fell to the desk. When he met Nathaniel’s gaze again, his brow had creased with sincerity, his voice adamant. “But I’ll fetch it for you in a week. I swear it.”

“Of course.” Nathaniel’s tone was gentle. “One moment, please.” He set the letter opener down and opened a drawer. Rows of slender vials lay within, nestled into velvet-padded slots. Each vial appeared empty. He scanned their labels with a quiet hum, and he lifted one from the assortment. As soon as he undid the tiny cork, crimson red strands appeared within the vial. He hushed the captured sound with his mind and with the fibers in his skin. When he tipped it into his palm, it lay still and silent. Dormant.

He glanced at Gabriel. The man knew about his magic. He’d hired Nathaniel to collect blackmail material on a business opponent, after all. But the creases in Gabriel’s brow still deepened, and his lips parted slightly. A portrait of bewilderment. Amusing.

Nathaniel’s slim fingers teased the strands of sound apart, as though playing a child’s string game. Cat’s cradle. The threads were light and feathery and silken. He presented them to Gabriel when he’d divided them evenly between his palms. “Rather lovely, aren’t they?” His words were soft.

The man’s expression had only grown more baffled. Still, he nodded slowly, seemingly on instinct.

Nathaniel spread his palms apart, tilted them, let the threads slide onto the desk. They coiled on the wood, slow and lethargic, as though stirring from a deep slumber. He leaned back in his chair. “Have a listen,” he hummed. A crisp snap of his fingers, and the threads sprang to life and flew into the man’s ears.

Gabriel’s eyes widened. A choked gasp escaped him. Nathaniel swiftly slid his whiskey glass aside so the man wouldn’t knock it from the desk. Not a moment too soon, as Gabriel clapped his hands over his ears. Nathaniel inhaled, then exhaled, steadying his focus. He tugged on his faint connection to the threads.

The man’s face reddened. His form went rigid. He opened his mouth, but only managed to take a rasping breath. The threads of sound laced through him quite well. They deafened his nerves so Gabriel’s muscles refused to obey him. Vocal cords included, of course — the yelling would’ve been a proper headache, and it would’ve attracted unwanted attention. Nathaniel could hear his children laughing. They were playing somewhere in the halls nearby.

He vividly remembered the sensation that came with such a trick. He’d experienced it himself a few times in his youth, courtesy of his grandfather. As long as the captured sound was piercing enough, it evoked pain. A paralyzing, burning, consuming pain.

Whenever Nathaniel performed the trick on someone, the image of a missed gunshot darted through his mind — how the ear-splitting burst of sound startled the target, made them momentarily freeze despite the danger. A shock. Stunned. Spiked heartbeat. Ears ringing. A vibration that shook them to their core. Nathaniel stretched the effect of that moment and amplified its intensity. He wondered whether the letter opener would’ve hurt more or less.

A needle of pity jabbed through him at the surprise and terror in the man’s eyes. But really, he reminded himself firmly, Gabriel had brought it upon himself. Nathaniel had given him every chance to supply the money in a reasonable amount of time without consequences. The tightness in his throat eased, and the burning annoyance in his chest dwindled.

He exhaled, clasped his hands on the desk, and gave the man a warm smile. “Steam whistle from 1812, if you’re wondering.” He knew the shrill sound flooded Gabriel’s hearing, but he’d left enough crevices for his voice to slip through, albeit muffled. There was always a chance Gabriel could read lips as well. In any case, Nathaniel’s throat itched too much to stifle his words any longer. “And those papers, if you’re also wondering about them, discuss a transaction that doesn’t concern you in the slightest. I’d rather you didn’t poke your nose where it doesn’t belong. Quite a reasonable request, wouldn’t you say?”

Gabriel’s face had flushed beet red. A trickle of sweat slid down his forehead. He was trembling, his breaths shallow. Nathaniel’s head tilted as he studied his pained expression. He couldn’t recall how long the whistle would last before it died out, and inflicting permanent damage could prove troublesome. He snapped his fingers again, just to be safe.

Gabriel still had his hands pressed over his ears, but the crimson threads squeezed between his fingers to escape. They were much thinner and fainter than before. More silence than sound. Within a moment, they’d flickered into nothingness in midair.

Gabriel shuddered and slumped forward; one arm thudded onto the desk for support. Nathaniel clicked his tongue, but he didn’t voice his displeasure aloud. He knew he needed to allow time for recovery. Still, his patience frayed as seconds ticked toward a minute, and protests brimmed behind his teeth.

But when Gabriel opened his mouth, a sound drifted from the hall. The sound of running, of soft laughter. The children. Nathaniel’s finger flew to his own lips in a hushing gesture, his gaze sharp. Gabriel froze. The patter of small footsteps passed the doorway and receded into silence. Nathaniel released a breath, lowering his finger. He nodded at the man.

Gabriel shook his head, seeming to have regained some strength. “Don’t—” A cough broke through his words; a tremor lingered in his frame. Nathaniel nudged the whiskey glass back toward him. Gabriel ignored it. He inhaled raggedly, his voice quiet and hoarse as he went on. “Don’t do that again. Please.”

A note of desperation rang in his voice. Something cold prickled in Nathaniel’s chest before warm satisfaction smothered it. A smile curved his lips. His shoulders relaxed, his tone light. “Let’s go over the terms of our arrangement again, shall we?”

Gabriel nodded, his gaze fixed on the desk.

“You’ll fetch the money. You’ll bring it to me by… oh, let’s say, tomorrow. Noon. And we’ll count it together in my office, just to make sure everything’s in order. Shouldn’t cause too much trouble, should it?”

A few seconds of hesitation. Gabriel squeezed his eyes shut and inhaled shakily again. Another nod. “Right, that’s— yeah. I’ll have it to you by then.”

Nathaniel’s smile broadened. “Marvelous.”

“Oh this is kind of a fun one to think about.” He muses, “I know so many talented trainers now this is going to be a tough one.”

“It’d be a bit too obvious for me to pick Serena as my battle partner I think. Not that she wouldn’t be amazing but, we’ve actually never battled yet so far. I think we know basically how our styles work on the battlefield, but knowing how we work individually is very different than working as a pair. So... Serena’s pretty far up on the list by default, but we’ll be working on that when she feels like doing so.” He feels a little guilty not just saying her by default but, trusts that she’ll understand his reasoning.

“I think I’m going to have to say Leon on this one. We’re both near undefeatable trainers with Charizards, and we literally can’t beat eachother to save our lives.” He laughs, “every single time is a stalemate, so if we can’t win we might as well work together. Not to mention he studied up a lot on how my techniques work even before we met, so he’d probably have a pretty good idea about what my plans are without needing to communicate too much and interrupt the battle. And Leon’s just one of my closest friends anyway, so naturally even without all that he was high up on the list regardless.”

“Pairs I’d like to take on...” He hums, “Blue and Green would be nostalgic, and they’re one hell of a pair when they actually work together. Cinder and Green’s Blastoise have had a rivalry for ages, just like Green and I. Blue following up to Green’s aggression in the battlefield is just dangerous, I’ll leave it at that.”

“But since I didn’t pick her as my partner I think it’d only be fitting for me to say Dani and Serena as opponents for Leon and I. Dani’s an exceptional trainer even without taking the champion position like the rest of us did at least once, plus she and Serena are basically sisters. I’m sure their connection would shine on the battlefield and they’d make for one hell of a pair to fight for two near undefeatable people.”
