Alanna was orphaned at a young age. She and her parents were caught in a heavy storm on their way home from a trip to the mountains. The car hydroplaned and went off the road, into a ditch. Her mother’s seatbelt snapped and sent her through the windshield, killing her. Her father was badly injured, but he managed to get Alanna and himself out of the car, only to be thrown to the ground when the gas tank blew. Cassim took the brunt of the blast to protect his daughter. Somehow, he managed to get them to a hospital, but was overcome by his injuries a few hours later. Alanna survived, but the accident left physical and mental scars. Her back was covered in gashes and burns that, though extensive, didn’t damage anything vital. And she was mute. That had nothing to do with her physical injuries and everything to do with the trauma of the experience. She wouldn’t speak a word, but she would wake screaming within minutes of falling asleep every night. With no known relatives or godparents or even family friends to take her in, Alanna was placed in foster care. She went through many different foster families. None of them lasted long. Her powers manifested when she was twelve. Her foster father at that point, a man named Hasib, decided he wanted a taste of younger flesh than his wife’s and forced himself upon Alanna, thinking she would be an easy target since she was small for her age and hadn’t spoken in five years. He was wrong. Hasib’s wife Yadira found Alanna in her room less than an hour later, holding a midnight black dwarf rat in her lap and staring blankly in shock at her foster father’s mangled, chewed up corpse. The woman’s resulting shriek jolted Alanna into action, and she ran. A woman with dark skin and silver hair, who introduced herself as Ororo Munroe, found the girl sitting alone in a nearby park--still holding the rat--and brought her to the Xavier Institute for Gifted Individuals. She’s been a part of the X-men ever since.
