A short story of my pedalboard)) I’ve bought this Furman spb-8 some where in the middle of 2000’s. I’ve had there only my Boss GT-8 and Tubeman, but when I bought Marshall JVM 210 I understood that I need something for pedals that I started buying more and more)) Then it has been changed as we see on these photos. Finally I turned to the start point. Now I’m waiting for my Quad Cortex processor and all these pedals will be moved to a studio rack

Just picked up my @bondieffects Sick As and @walrusaudioeffects Bellwether. Did a little reorganizing and I think this will be my board set up for a good long while. Zvex Box of Rock Vexter Series

Hey look, another amp clone!

The ZVex Box of Rock is designed to simulate a dimed non-master volume Marshall JTM45. It's a pretty small enclosure and has four controls: Drive, Tone, Volume, and Boost. The boost operates on its own footswitch and can be used independently of the drive stage.

On the boost side 0% is unity gain, so you can dial in just a little bit of that to add some extra mojo to your clean tone if you like. The boost (I believe) is based on the Zvex Super Hard On. With the drive side engaged, the boost can get painfully loud. Seriously. This thing is lethal when maxed out. Don't say I didn't warn you...

So how about that drive side anyway? It's cool! It's definitely not as high gain as the Xotic SL Drive, but after all, they're clones of different amps.It has an undeniable Marshall characteristic that is just made all more awesome by the SHO boost built in.

For my ears, the best sound for rhythm and general rock tones puts the drive at about 2 or 3 o'clock depending on pickups, tone about 2 o'clock, volume at slightly above unity, and the boost barely above 9 o'clock. That gets me a pretty nice chunky foundation sound.

One thing I am really impressed with is how well this pedal cleans up with the guitar's volume knob. A lot of times pedals like this can get sort of flubby and not-that-interesting with lower input volumes (looking at you SL Drive), but this guy is nice with lower guitar volume. Like, really nice. You could easily have this be an always on pedal with clean tones on the back half of your volume knob and just roll up for crunch. Between that and the boost built right in you've got three really great sounds in this pedal.

The Box of Rock is what I would call a medium gain overdrive. With the gain all the way maxed out, it was not taking my head off. I bother to mention this because so many other reviews I've read about this pedal point out how high gain it is...but i'm just not hearing it! If you crank up the output volume and boost, sure...you'll get that sound...but it's completely unusable. It's WAY too loud in my opinion and it the tone is sort of lost at that volume anyway. This is a great middle of the road gain with a huge amount of boost on tap. Full stop.

This little guy retails for about $200, which...sucks. For that price I think this pedal should come with a more active Tone control and 18V operation. If I had to choose a Marshall clone pedal, I still think I'd have to go with the SL Drive. The Box of Rock is an awesome pedal, don't get me wrong, but for my ear and my style of playing I want that higher gain and other options built in like different EQ curves and other amp models (remember, the SL has a super bass mode built in).

Definitely worth trying out if you're in the market, but you might still want to consider the competition.
