You lean against the wall, standing off to the side and out of everyone's way. Your headphones are pulled up over your head, blaring the sounds of Spit It Out into your ears to drown out Thong Song blasting from the living room. Your head is hung low, your arms hugging your chest for personal comfort.
You had no idea why you came to this stupid New Years Eve party, but here you were, miserable as you predicted. Well, backtrack a bit, you did know why. You got peer pressured by your acquaintances Ash and August. They were fellow metalheads, but not exactly your friends. You had classes with them and restrained any friendship because of their connections with Farkus, whom you hate.
Farkus is a fucking poser bitch.
Anyways.
You also don't really hang with them because you're not hardcore like them. You love Slipknot, but they're kind of the only metal band you like. You much prefer Insane Clown Posse and Massive Attack, which are more like dark / goth / hip hop, which isn't very hardcore to most.
Either way, that shit doesn't matter because you're still standing here all alone trying to not sob your eyes out because you're so miserable.
You feel tears welling up in your eyes.
God damnit. Don't start crying, you pussy.
You make a loop around the house, looking for the bathroom. Between your anxiety and all the people, it takes a full three loops before you find the downstairs bathroom.
You quickly shut and lock the door behind you and sink down into a ball against it. Tears pour from your eyes, which you allow to fall instead of frantically wiping them away.
Purity is the next song on your burned cd player to play, causing you to turn down the music a little bit to listen to your pathetic sobbing. Your hands shake violently, and your breath is hitched and heavy.
The shower curtain across the room is pulled open by a hand coming from inside. A head pops out, looking at you.
You quickly look up and wipe your tears.
"Sorry," you sniffle.
The boy sitting in the bathtub frowns. "You're fine... uh... are you okay?"
You shake your head. "Parties suck. Pretty sure my friends ditched me. Y'know.."
He moves himself in the bathtub, pulling his knees to his chest, revealing a red solo cup in his hand. He pats the tub floor beside him, inviting you to sit next to him.
You stand up and climb into the bathtub, the room drowned in a dim yellow lighting from the one working light over the sink. You hide from the light behind the shower curtain, looking at him nervously.
"What're you doing sitting in the bathtub?" you ask the boy.
He shrugs. "My friend is acting like... popular. I dunno. It's weird."
You nod, carefully rubbing his shoulder to show support. "I get it."
He offers you a drink, which you deny.
"What're you listening to?" he asks, picking up on the loud bass and drums from your headphones.
You turn the volume down, "The Knot- er, Slipknot"
He chuckles. "You friends with like, Farkus, or something?"
"Oh, fuck no," you scoff. "I'd rather die. Uh... they're the only metal band I really like. I usually listen to like, Insane Clown Posse and Massive Attack."
He nods. "Never listened to those before."
"They're pretty good," you shrug. "I can make a mix for you, stranger boy?"
"Eli," he smiles, "Uh, sure. I'm down."
"Cool."
You sit in silence for a minute, listening to Prosthetics start up. Outside, you can hear a muffled version of some Britney Spears song thumping in the living room.
"You kissing anyone at midnight?" you ask him, eyeing your watch, which reads two minutes until midnight.
He shakes his head. He seems a little sad about it.
"Me neither." you shrug. "Always next year. And the year after that, I guess."
He bites his lip, chewing on the dead skin. "Why wait?"
You raise an eyebrow and hum with question.
"Uhm- sorry, nevermind."
"No," you speak, pulling your headphones down. "What'd you mean by that?"
He shrugs, acting shy on you as he sets his cup down on the edge of the tub. "I thought maybe we could kiss or something. Sorry. I'm like, really drunk, I think."
You smile. "Sure."
He raises an eyebrow, quickly looking up at you. "What?"
"We can kiss at midnight," you shrug. "If you want. Kinda would suck to go into a new century without a midnight kiss, especially one as monumental as Y2K."
He chuckles. "Yeah."
Outside, you hear the music quiet. Then the chanting starts.
You share a look with Eli, holding your hand up, counting down alongside the teenagers participating in the actual party.
"Five...
four...
three...
two...
one...
Happy New Year!"
Eli quickly grabs the back of your head with his hand, pulling you into him. He smashes his lips against yours, clinging to you like he's been waiting for this forever.
You can't help but feel he might see you as someone else, someone he wished to kiss tonight, but you're too miserable and buzzed to really care. Even if he didn't, cool.
He pulls away after a moment with a little apology. He fears he's come off so strong.
But it's gonna take more to scare you away.
Well, the flickering light almost did, but you wound up jumping into his arms for protection.
"What was that about?" he whispers, trying to listen in on the teenagers outside.
You shrug, keeping quiet.
Then a piercing scream rings out from upstairs.
You share wide-eyed looks, grasping onto one another for protection.
"Should we...?"
He nods, grabbing his cup while pulling himself and you out of the tub.
You know, for if you want to find my very sporadic works.

Guys this movie was so good it actually changed my life
Laura (Y2K) x GN! Reader
———————————————————————
December 14, 1999
“We can rent Death Becomes Her! I can show you what I’ve been working on with the basketball site- its totally cool-“
You listened to the brunette in front of you ramble on about all the things you guys could do over winter break, ignoring the ever present pit in your stomach that comes along with being her friend.
To call Laura your best friend would be an understatement, you guys had been practically attatched at the hip since you met. And to say you liked her would also be an understatement, you were practically in love with her. You knew nothing could ever happen though, she’s your best friend.
“-And NYE is gonna a total shit show, but I was thinking we could go to this party together? I know it’s not really your thing but I want you there.”
“Sounds like fun!” You agreed, not really paying much attention to what she was saying before she wrapped her arms around you and pulled you into a hug.
“So, wanna sleepover tonight?” She asked as she pulled back, looking over you with her big eyes.
“Sure! my place or yours?” You asked, excitedly
“My place for sure, See ya!” Laura smiled big before thrning and heading to class with a little wave.
———————————————————————
“Dude, I don’t know why you don’t just tell her, she acts like you put the sun in the sky”
You look at the barely legible handwriting on the note your friend, Ash had passed you. Ash was the only other person who knew about the way you felt about Laura. She always somewhat encouraged you, despite her negative opinions of Laura. You pass the note back to Ash and shrugged, earning an eyeroll from her.
———————————————————————
Laura’s room was always comfortable. Between the posters for new devices coming out, the pastel pink of the walls, and the wirring of the computer in the corner. It always smelled like her.
“So check this out,” She motioned for you to join her. “Now, click the basketball in the bottom left corner.”
You let a chuckle escape your throat as you saw the game appear on screen. You turned to her, getting slightly lost in the way her face lit up, so proud of what she’d done.
———————————————————————
That night you guys were spread out on her couch as the TV set whistled out the movie, but that was not what you were paying attention to.
You were pulled from any coherent thoughts as Laura laid her head on your shoulder, wrapping her arms around your neck to pull you into a hug. You hesitated putting your arms around her, but you did and laid back. You breathed her in, she always smelled the same.
You lightly stroked her hair, admiring her face as she looked up at you.
Fuck
You really wanted to kiss her.
You felt a warm hand against the side of your face, pulling you from your thoughts.
“Is this okay?” Laura asked, almost as if she could read your mind.
You nod and she leans in, pressing her lips to yours softly. She tasted like strawberry lip smacker. She pulled away and you almost immediately missed her touch.
“I like you.” you broke the silence
“I know” She replied, giggling slightly and playing with your hair.
Hear me out, an Ash x Reader x Eli where the reader was this popular kid who actually was nice to everyone and the three of them have this secret relationship going on that none of their friends know about.
They’ve been doing great at hiding it until the tensions of the whole Y2K of it all leads to it being obvious to Laura and CJ (maybe the reader has been super touchy and protective over both and CJ calls them out on it in the woods after the portapotty incident or something?)
Just like protective secret relationship/sweet stolen fluff scenes with both. Reader could use she/her or they/them pronouns if you do either?
OH MY FUCKING GOD WHEN I TWLL YOU I SCRREAMED AND STARTED GIGGLING UPOK SEEING THISSSSS ; and yes omg omg omg doing this asapppp!!!!!&×;=*@&=((×,=,÷ ; actually so excited cause I think y2k is one of my new main fixations so... ; anyways tysm for requesting!! hope you enjoy <3 ; holy shit this is so balls. "Shut up, already!" you exclaim. "Good God. It takes nothing to just be nice, Farkus. There's people dying outside this garage, and your main focus is insulting Eli?"
Ash smirks from the corner, standing near CJ. They're silent, though, knowing they can't blow their little cover. Eli gives you a kind smile, silently thanking you for standing up to Farkus for him.
Farkus gives you an odd look. "What, standing up for your boyfriend, or something?"
"No." you reply. "There's other shit to worry about other than Eli and Danny existing in the same plane as you, you egotistical freak! If you didn't notice, three of your friends got killed by live artificial intelligence!"
He blinks, looking over at Ash, who looks away. Laura snickers at this.
You quickly lunge for Eli, pulling him away from the door. You just felt something in your gut. You had to act.
Your gut seemed to be right, as a large machine with power tools had broken through the wooden door and attacked Danny. He's bleeding from his chest, using Eli as a crutch to lean against the opposite wall.
CJ and Ash knocked over some bookshelves after the monster had ruptured the water heater, trying to block off the door any way they could. Ash quickly grabs a skateboard, deciding to use it as either a weapon or transportation, whatever needed to be done.
You stand behind Eli, your ears ringing as he speaks his final words to Danny. As the bleeding boy closes his eyes, you pull Eli away from him as tears pour down his cheeks.
Laura opens the garage door, leading you all outside. Eli is distraught, frantically wiping tears away from his eyes. His hands are stuck in yours.
You can tell he just wants to crumble and cry into the crook of your neck, but he can't. All he wanted was to enjoy this party with you and Danny. Now, Danny is dead and yours and his lives are in danger. He can only imagine how you feel trying to secretly protect him and Ash.
"Hey, halfpipe!" Farkus giggles, skating up to a knocked over basketball hoop to grind off of it.
He fails, cracking his head open on the pavement.
Ash gasps, rushing to Farkus. They shove at him, shaking him, trying to get him to wake up. Even with the growing pool of blood under his head, they're just hoping this is some dumb prank.
But it's not.
You look to Eli, who nods, silently stating he'll be alright if you go comfort Ash. He hangs back with Laura, who's using the 5-1 method to try and help him calm down. He's practically hyperventilating at this point, poor boy.
You rush to Ash, pulling them up with comforting hands running down their upper arms. They sniffle, standing up, looking to you with tears in their eyes.
You somberly smile, adjusting their beloved Limp Bizkit hat.
"We have to go. Okay?"
Ash nods, looking back down at Farkus, their camera clutched in their hands. They look back at Eli, the two sharing looks over your shoulder.
"Yeah, let's go." they nod.
CJ and Laura share looks, watching Eli wait for you to hop on the back of his bike with him. You stand on the back cassettes, hunched over to wrap your arms around his upper torso. Ash follows at your side on their new skateboard, glancing over to check that you're still hanging on alright.
Laura is just behind Ash, drifting through town on rollerskates like a typical 80s movie teenager. CJ is on your left, trailing with a skateboard as well. He's tugging his dumb little bucket hat over his head every three seconds, the air pushing it up over and over again.
You lean down to whisper into Eli's ear.
"You alright E?"
He nods with a little sniffle, looking at the blood staining his hands.
You look over to Ash, tilting your head to silently ask if they're okay. They look forward, eyes fixed on the road ahead.
Your poor lovers.
Fuck those stupid apocolypse preppers for being right about Y2K.
You sit with Ash in the little tent, watching as they rewatch the footage from earlier in the night on their camera. Most of it was recorded by them, displaying their band of rejects and losers they called friends, who were now dead. They only smile, leaning against you, fighting back tears.
"Open that mouth, slut!"
You bite the inside of your cheek, listening as Ash chuckles. It's dry and fake, even coming from a now dead person, it still kind of hurt them.
You rub their shoulder, giving them a reassuring little smile. They smile back at you, looking back down at the camera.
You just wanted to give them some comfort and quiet after their little fight with the others over Eli's computer. Obviously, being with both Ash and Eli made this little thing cause a rift with your heart. You stood with both of them, just wanting to live, even if only through the night. But, you knew how Ash was, and you knew Eli wanted the time with Laura to try and hack the machine for their little plan and whatnot.
You also didn't really understand computer and internet stuff like Laura did. You might as well just stay in your lane for now. You're not the same popular as Laura, friends with all the other popular kids, ungodly smart, perfectly attractive. You're more of the get-along-with-everyone type of popular, the popular who fails tests here and there, and has their weaknesses and strengths.
You don't compare yourself to Laura in a low light by any means, but you're not the same kind of popular she is. Ash and Eli will spend all day long defending you and your unique title.
And trust me, they have.
Turns out Danny and Farkus aren't your biggest fans for whatever reason, but who cares. You can't make everyone like you.
Plus, they're both dead.
Who gives a fuck.
You allow Ash to lean up into you, using you like a giant pillow. You pull out a joint from their pocket, offering it to them. They quickly grab it and light it, shutting their camera for the time being.
Ash smokes up the tent while you sit in silence, just kind of thinking. It's not long before your arm is wrapped around them and your legs are all tangled with theirs. The whole area reeks of weed and you're slightly struggling to breathe through it all, but you don't care.
Though, the scent attracts CJ like a dog.
"You're getting high without me?" he asks with a little chuckle.
"Hey," Ash smiles, leaning up to offer CJ a puff. "Smoke with the homies, hm?"
CJ smiles, getting blazed alongside Ash as you sit in a comfortable silence. His eyes linger on your touch with Ash before he looks away. He knows there's a little something-something going on.
It's not even just this that drives him to that thought. You've been kind of touchy with them all night. Maybe you're just really close friends, but something is telling CJ that there's something more to this.
He carefully eyes the way you laugh with Ash, grabbing a hold of their hand and intertwining their fingers with yours. There's something different with how you lean into them, how you act so genuine and raw with them.
Maybe he's just tripping massive balls since he's been smoking all night, and he's overthinking.
"No, no, no, she fell straight on her ass!" Ash laughs, "It was the funniest shit I've ever seen, I swear to God!"
Eli rushes into the tent, coughing a bit due to the second-hand smoke inhalation. You quickly look up, eyeing your boyfriend with a smile.
"Hey, we're leaving." he informs. "C'mon."
You glance over at Ash and CJ before standing up, trailing after Eli. The blazed up two follow after, conversing a bit. You quickly grab Eli's backpack, tossing it to him before he lost it once more.
You jog back to him, grabbing at his wrist lightly. You walk next to him through the woods, holding hands the whole way through.
Eli keeps shooting you nervous looks, silently pondering if you want to be holding his hand right now, in front of CJ. You never catch his looks, though, partially high from Ash and CJ's second-hand smoke. Your clammy hand is clung onto his tightly, and he just listens to you ramble on about some sort of fraction of a plan.
CJ notices this, too.
"They're my friends!"
You blink, looking between your partners and CJ and then to Laura and... whoever the stoner ass video store dude is. Honestly, you've met him six times because of Eli and you still can't remember his name. He steps down from the fallen tree, wielding some wooden stick things like a samurai.
Laura rushes toward your group of misfits, watching as the computer monster turns on the chainsaw it had attached to one of its arm ligaments. You stand in front of Ash and Eli, arms extended to hold them back. It's a small attempt at trying to protect them.
Stoner guy runs forward, and ends up with his arm chopped off.
You cover your mouth, unable to scream.
"Woah, that does not feel goo-"
Then his head is cut off.
His decapitated head rolls to your feet.
You scream in sheer terror.
Eli wraps his arms around you and spins you around, shoving you into the portapotty to hide. None of you could hop the fence, considering it was electric and had barbed wire. You couldn't get around the machine. There was no where else to run.
He pushes you in after Laura, making sure you got to safety before he did. Just as he steps foot into the cramped space, he's pulled back and clings at the sides of the doorway. You immediatly grab for him, seeing the computer monster had gotten a hold of his backpack.
"Eli!" you shout, grabbing at his hands to tug him back inside.
"Y/n!" he shouts, squeezing onto your hands as he tries to push forward.
Ash quickly grabs onto your waist, helping pull you back further into the stall. CJ and Laura hold onto Ash's shoulders, pulling back as they're perched on the toilet.
Eli's backpack dramatically rips, falling off his shoulders before he scrambles inside, slamming the door shut before locking it. You slam him into a hug, protecting him like a human shield, your back facing the door. Ash exhales shakily, wrapping you both in a hug of their own.
Before you can speak and collect your thoughts, the portapotty is pushed down, and begins to topple down the hill.
You scream, grabbing onto both Eli and Ash, clinging at their jackets. Your arms wrap around them as you're smacked around the smelly box, trying to minimize any physical damage this could possibly cause them. Mental damage was inevitable tonight. There's not much you could do about that.
Ash hides their face in your chest while Eli wraps his arms around both of you as best he can, clinging onto you for dear life.
Finally, the box of feces hits the bottom of the hill with an abrupt stop. Laura quickly opens the door and climbs out, stumbling toward a little pond. CJ is next, then finally Ash, you, and Eli.
You follow after CJ and Ash, using the pond water to rub the fecal matter from your skin. You wouldn't be able to get it off your clothes, and you smelled like literal shit, but it was better than just dealing with it. Eli joins just after, swallowing his vomit twice.
Ash sits against a tree, thinking silently. Eli tears up again, frustrated and upset.
You pull Eli over toward Ash and sit down with them, holding both of their hands as you make them listen to the crickets singing in the night. You guide them through a little breathing exercise to calm the nerves.
"In and out..." you exhale. "In and out."
Ash closes their eyes as they lean against the tree, squeezing onto your hand. Eli stares down at your shoes, crushing your hand like there's no tomorrow. You press kisses to each of their hands subconsciously.
Laura and CJ blink as they watch from afar, sharing odd looks.
"Yo," CJ calls, catching your attention. "Are you guys gonna actually kiss or something? You've all been looking like you need to like... all night, man."
Laura nods. "The tension is strangling me. Just kiss already."
You look between the two, wide-eyed.
Laura sighs at your dumbfounded look, one you shared with your partners. "You're not that slick. You, Y/n, have been really touchy and protective tonight. I've never seen you act that way with anyone before."
Eli's face is painted a bright red, and Ash looks like they could kill someone.
"It's chill, guys," CJ waves off. "We don't care. But please, get it all out before we get to the school, alright?"
You nod, pulling yourself to your feet. You hold your hands out for Ash and Eli, helping them up as well. Laura and CJ lead the way through the woods.
Laura hums a tune, and CJ jumps in with lyrics, rapping along like the wannabe Eminem he was.
Before you know it, you're all singing along, Ash and Eli at your sides, swinging their hands with yours like little kids.
"He drinks a whiskey drink,
He drinks a vodka drink,
He drinks a lager drink,
He drinks a cider drink,
He sings the songs that remind him of the good times,
He sings the songs that remind him of the better times!

Warnings: Fluff, Vomit, Swearing, Nonsexual Nudity (showering together but I swear it's innocent, she washes Ash's hair for them it's sweet), Canon Death mentions, Canon drinking mentions, Ash is just full out having a break down at one point, I keep calling Ash "Silver Stack (like a stack of mini pancakes ya know?) but idk if anyone will get that, Ash might be a touch out of character but they're in a delicate place okay?, major amount of pet names
It’s so rare that she gets to wake up this warm. Ash’s head resting on her chest, directly over her heart from where they fell asleep listening to the way it beats for them. Like it was their own personal white noise. Their hand is tangled into her shirt, balling up the corner of it in their fist in the way a baby would cling to the blanket in its crib. Their breathing comes out even and slow, a slight nasally sound that is ever so grounding. It’s gentle, this slow moment between two teenagers pretending to be their own people. It would kill her in two days when their respective guardians came home and they couldn’t keep swapping back and forth between their bed and hers. Playing house together, soft and adoring. The closest either of them had been to feeling normal in this relationship.
“Baby,” her voice comes out rasped with sleep, a hand rubbing up and down her lover’s back, “Hey, baby.” “No,” it’s a half comprehensible whine as they shift their weight. Climbing further on top of her to nuzzle their face into the crook of her neck. “Don’t wanna,” it’s punctuated with a kiss to her neck, their hand ditching (Y/n)’s shirt to come rest lazily on her jaw. “Ash, come on, I want breakfast.” “Just like, five more hours.” “Hours?” They let out a lazy hum that attempts to replicate a “yeah” pressing a few more half awake, open mouthed kisses to her neck. “Doesn’t that sound nice? Wasting the day away in each other’s arms?” She laughs, a hand coming up to tangle in their hair and pull them slightly away from the exposed skin of her throat, “We did that yesterday.” “Uh huh, do it today too,” they mumble, tugging against her grip to lay their head back down. “You have plans with Farkus today, babe.”
It elicits a groan out of their mouth, Ash rolling off of her to lay on their back beside her instead. “That sucks.” “And that party is tonight, I promised the team I’d meet them there.” It gets her another groan followed by a whiny, “That sucks worse.” (Y/n) rolls over onto her side, smiling at the dramatic way Ash had thrown an arm over their face. “You’re being ridiculous. Come on, the party is going to be fun.” “I hate that guy.” Were there people who didn’t hate Chris? That seems a little obvious, doesn’t it? “Yeah, but he has a big house. Plenty of places for the two of us to go hide in at midnight.”
Ash pulls their arm down, turning to look at her, “You’re going to ditch the team to go kiss me at midnight?” “Of course I am, it’s a big night. Beginning of a year, a decade, a century, and a millennia? I have to make sure I start those off right.” Ash quirks an eyebrow up at them in response, a smirk playing across their lips. “And kissing me would be starting them off right?” She smirks back, grabbing their jaw to pull them closer, “I can’t imagine starting my year any other way.” Their lips meet in a gentle touch, a giggle spilling out of her lips and into Ash’s mouth as they pull her closer.
A dopey smile covers their face as they pull away, forehead resting against hers, “You needed to practice?” “Obviously, I need this kiss to be perfect, Ash. There’s a lot weighing on it.” They hum, dragging their thumb over her bottom lip as they watch her with tired, adoring eyes, “You’ve had eleven months of practice, dweeb. I’m worried for your team if you need more than eleven months of practice for one thing.” She scoffs, pushing their face away from her as she rolls on her back, “Who the hell even says ‘dweeb’ anymore? You’re going soft, Silver Stack.” They wrap an arm around her waist, pulling her closer to lay back on their spot on her chest, “You’re making me soft, Doll.” She hums in response, threading her fingers back through Ash’s hair, “That’s how I like you. All soft, and clingy, it’s cute.” She feels Ash nuzzle their cheek against her chest, a half-minded hum being the only proof they even heard her. “Now, five more minutes?” “Yeah, Ash, five more minutes can’t hurt.”

It really was a perfect kiss, but if their millenia had to be based off of last night, then they were as good as dead. Her body feels heavy, joints screaming and exhaustion fogging her mind as she stumbles out of Crawford High. The January air somehow feels colder here in the piercing daylight than it had while she was stumbling through the dark woods. But with the consciousness taken down, (Y/n) swears the air feels better in her lungs.
She probably looks crazy, leaning against the school taking these deep slow breaths. Head tilted against the brick with her face pointed to the sky, slowly letting the air fill her lungs. The only way she thinks this could be better would be if it was drizzling rain. Something light to cleanse the grime from her skin on the walk home. She’s unsure how long she stands like that, eyes closed and breathing slow, until she feels a presence in front of her. She peeks an eye open, smiling softly as she sees who stands before her.
“Let’s get you home,” Ash is reaching a bloodied hand out to her with a tight lipped smile. She looks to their hand before shaking her head; using her leg to push herself off the wall. “Your place or mine?” It’s soft, barely audible as she comes to stand next to them. Ash’s hand falls to her belt loop instead, wrapping their middle and ring fingers around it as they realize she’s not going to take their hand here. “Your place is closer.” She nods, letting her hand come down to wrap around their wrist as they turn the corner of the building.
It’s a silent walk, outside of (Y/n)’s soft humming, the tune falling in line with the way her thumb runs over Ash’s wrist. A perfectly matched rhythm that surely is meant to comfort one of them, but Ash isn’t positive which one of them it’s for. They try not to focus on it, instead focusing on the walk and making sure that (Y/n) is paying attention to where she’s going. The cold is biting into their skin, pale nose turning bright red in a way they couldn’t remember it doing the night before.
“I don’t remember being this cold last night,” they look over to her face, taking in the slight smile that graces her lips. “It was all the adrenaline,” she shakes her head, tugging them slightly closer by the wrist, “I’ll warm you up when we get inside.” They hum, tightening their grip on her belt loop. “How do you plan to do that?” Ash’s brows wiggle, leaning onto her arm as they smirk up at her. “A hot shower and my Crawford crewneck.” Her face falls stoney, but there’s a playful glint in her eye that they can’t miss. Ash fakes a pout, rubbing their cheek against her shoulder, “What if I just wanna be held?” Her nose scrunches, bumping them with her hip, “You are covered in human shit.” “So are you!” They scoff, pushing her back with rolled eyes.
She laughs, it’s a hollow replica of her laugh but it’s enough for them to laugh too. “That’s why you need a shower, Silver stack.” They roll their eyes again, “And you don’t?” “No, I’m craving one but you’re the one pouting about the cold. Like hell are you putting stranger shit on my blankets and jackets.” She’s bouncing up the front steps, shaking her head as she talks. It’s so quiet out that they can hear the click in the lock from behind her, following her through the house like a lost puppy.
Her room seems to be the worst for wear of the entire house. Mac, Walkman, and hair tools all lumped together as a heap of wires and electronics in the center of her floor. She giggles at it, stepping over the pile like it’s nothing to walk over to her dresser, “Not that smart, huh guys? Eli’s electronics came to find him and you couldn’t even open the door? Shame.” Ash shakes their head, carefully making their way around the pile, “Don’t taunt them.” “I’m just saying, I bet your shit at least made it out of your room. Look at this weakness.” “Stop taunting them!” They’re laughing shoving her shoulder as they lean on the dresser beside her.
“Or what? They’ll kill me too?” Their face falls, eyes searching the walls for somewhere else to look than the giant pile on her floor. They land on a picture tucked into her mirror, it’s the whole team, the girl being picked up by Danny in the middle of them, bright laughter lighting up both of their faces. He’s so proud of her that it feels like his pride could float out of the photo. It’s the day she set the new Crawford record for the most points scored in a game. Ash remembers taking it, lying to their friends about having to work so they can watch her in the playoffs. Danny had been lost when she asked them to take it, even more lost when they actually did. They never did let him in on their little secret, but maybe they should have. He surely would have been happy just to see her happy.
But that was a year ago, he wouldn’t make it to the playoffs this year. The thought makes their mouth sour, pressure building up in their throat with a racing heart. They feel like they can hear their own heartbeat, hand clamping over their mouth as they push away from the wood and run to her bathroom. Ash’s knees slam into the tiled floor so hard they swear the ceramics are rattling against their grout. Trembling hands grip the toilet's edges as the contents of their stomach tear their way up their throat. It’s a soarching burn, ripping through their esophagus until the flesh is raw and exposed to the stomach acid and beer their body is mustering up.
Faintly, somewhere over the rush of their blood pressure and the retching, Ash can hear water running. A cold washcloth finding the back of their neck as they kneel against the toilet trembling. “Get it out, Baby. Go ahead, get it out.” Her hand rubs soothing circles on their back, voice a gentle coo that barely reaches their ears.
Ash isn’t sure when they started to cry, maybe it had been reactionary tears that led to real ones. All they know is that they’re sobbing; they’re sobbing and they can’t stop. A second wet rag comes up to their mouth, wiping the disastrous mix of saliva, stomach acid, and bile that coats their lips and chin. Body trembling as it’s wracked with sobs, a clammy fist slamming down into the tiles beside them. “Big nut is fucking dead. He’s fucking dead, no one was supposed to fucking die. And my friends.” They take a deep breath, though it shakes as more sobs take it over, “My friends are all dead. And CJ, fuck man, CJ died holding my hand like I was someone who ever actually mattered to him. I almost fucking lost you back in those god damn woods and I-,” they can’t get the rest of it out, voice cracking as they reach out for (Y/n).
She lets them cling to her, two fists wound up in her shirt as their head finds her neck. “No one was supposed to die. I just wanted to get cross faded and kiss a pretty girl. No one was supposed to die. Big Nut is fucking dead. He died, he got fucking impaled, dude. He’s dead and I was so fucking awful to him. I was so fucking awful to your friends and now everyone is fucking dead.” They pull back, attempting to find (Y/n)’s facial expression through blurry vision, “I almost lost you in those fucking woods, and I barely know how I got you. Don’t fucking joke about that.” She pressed a kiss into their hairline, hand slipped under their tank top to rub their back. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have, I’m sorry, baby.” “I could have lost you,” it’s soft, barely audible as they tug themself into her lap, “I can’t lose you. You’re like, the only good thing this town has ever given me.”
A few more kisses find their way onto Ash’s face, hand still moving across their pale skin as she holds them. “You didn’t lose me, you won’t lose me. I’m right here, always gonna be right here.” She’s rocking them slightly, cooing into Ash’s ear as they cuddle as close to her as they can get. “Promise? Promise me I won’t lose you.” “I promise you, Ash. I won’t leave you, you’ve got me.” They press a kiss against her neck, grip loosening on her shirt. “Now, let’s get you cleaned up, huh? Take a shower and I’ll go clean up in there so you don’t have to see them.”
“No!” They’re pulling back, grabbing her face in their hands with bewildered eyes. “Don’t leave me.” She sighs, brushing a stray tear from Ash’s cheek, “Okay, okay baby. I’ll sit in here while you shower.” They shake their head, “Shower with me? I need to be able to see you.” Her pursed lips move back and forth as she thinks, looking them over. “Please? It’s not like you haven’t seen it before. Please, I need to see you.” She nods, letting out a second sigh as she slides her fingers through Ash’s hair. “Okay baby, come on now, let’s get you cleaned up.”
They slowly rise from her lap, shrugging off their jacket as they do. Ash’s hand comes out to help her up, which she willingly accepts. “Thank you, baby.” She grabs two towels from under the sink, draping them over the rack before slipping her jacket off.
It doesn’t take long before the two are both standing under the hot water, (Y/n)’s fingers working shampoo into Ash’s hair. Nails scratching at their scalp in a way that makes them whine. “I’m so lucky to have you.” She hums, a smile dotting across her face, “You sure are.” It gets her a soft laugh, Ash turning in her arms to rinse their hair out. “I’m being serious, (Y/n). Fred Durst thinks so too.” She hums, working shampoo through her own hair as she watches them smile at her, “Oh yeah? And how does Fred Durst know I’m with you, huh?”
Ash gives her a sheepish smile, swapping places with her so she can rinse her hair as they smooth conditioner onto theirs. “I might have told him that you were my girl. It felt nice to admit it to someone.” She smiles, tilting her head back up as she reaches out for the bottle in their hand. “And of course you told Fred first,” she closes the bottle, sitting it back on the shelf as she works the conditioner into her hair, “I think you feeling the need to tell your idol about us is the best compliment you’ve ever given me.” They smile to themself, scrubbing at their arms like they’re trying to make their skin raw. “Yeah, well. He said we seemed close and I couldn’t help myself. I just, god I want people to know you’re mine.” Their head tilts up, smiling over at her, “I fucking love you, I’m tired of pretending you don’t mean anything to me when people are around. And Fred says that I shouldn’t.”
There’s a giggle on her words as she shakes her head, “Fred Durst is giving you relationship advice?” “Yeah,” they swap places with her again to rinse the soap and conditioner off of their body, “He told me that I needed to treat a girl like you right. You know, keep my pants on and talk like an adult when things get tough so we don’t turn into the song ‘no sex’.” She giggles, “So was that advice before or after you told him the hat you made him wear was covered in human shit?” Their face falls, moving out from under the water so that she can rinse off, “Holy shit, I gave Fred fucking Durst a shit hat. Why did you let me do that?” “Let you?” She scoffs, moving out from under the water to push them under it, playfully dousing them in what, “Since when do I control what you do?” “You should have stopped me! I gave him a fucking shit hat!” Their face is bright red, eyes wide as they finally realize exactly what happened in the video store. “I met Fred Durst, played guitar for him, and gave him a shit hat. Why didn’t you stop me from giving him a shit hat?”
“It’s not my fault you gave Fred Durst a shit hat, silver stack. That was all your bad decisions.” They let out a pathetic laugh, wrapping their arms around her neck, nuzzling their face against her. Ash presses a kiss to her collarbone as they pout, mumbling against her skin, “You’re so mean to me. All the time, mean.” She lets a hand brush through their wet hair, the other busying itself with rubbing small circles onto their hip bone. “You’re mean to everyone, it's just pay back at this point, babe.” Ash’s face nuzzles even further into her neck, “I’m trying to do better at that. Wanna be better for you, so you have to be nice to me.”
She giggles, moving them both slightly forward to turn off the water. “I thought you liked when I’m mean to you.” She reaches out to grab one of the towels she’d hung up before, wrapping it around Ash’s shoulders. They slowly let her go, focusing on drying off. “Now, you clearly need something to eat. Let’s go get you some dinner, huh?” She wraps her own towel around her, stepping out onto her bath mat. “It’s like 7 a.m., that shit would be breakfast.” Her eyes roll, crossing over to the counter to grab the plush pajamas she brought into the room for herself. “Yeah, whatever you want it to be, Ash. Let’s just get you some food and get you into bed, huh?”
“At least you’re buying me dinner first, huh?” There’s a playful little smirk playing on their face, it only grows to be a smile as she grabs their face and pushes it away from her. “You are ridiculous. Sometimes things are all about getting to see you in my clothes.” Ash hums, grabbing the crewneck she’d promised them before to slip it over their head, “I see how it is, wanting me in your clothes so you can claim me. Sick.” She tilts their head up, pecking their nose with a smile, “I thought you wanted people to know I’m yours?” They laugh, tying their pajama pants onto their hips before offering her their hand. “I do, I really want that.”
She grabs it, flipping their hand over to look at the busted knuckles on it. “Oh baby, that little toy did your hand in.” (Y/n) steps past them, opening her medicine cabinet before tapping a hand on the counter, “Up, up.” “Doll, really I’m okay.” “Don’t make me pick you up,” she raises a brow, watching the silent way they hop up onto the counter. She grabs an alcohol wipe and gauze from the cabinet. Silently wiping down the open wounds on her hand before wrapping up their knuckles. Ash watches her with soft, adoring features, flexing their hand a few times after she ties off the gauze. (Y/n) laughs softly at the motion, bringing Ash’s hand up to their lips and pressing a soft kiss against the gauze, “Kiss to make it better.” “I think it needs two of those, you know, since it’s multiple knuckles or whatever.” With a laugh, a second kiss finds its way onto Ash’s hand before she pulls on their arm, prompting them off of the bathroom counter. “Food time, let’s go get you an omelet, baby.”
Their face lights up, pulling the bathroom door open, “I love omelets.” “I know you do, loser.” “We talked about you being mean to-” they pause, hand silently coming up to point into the room. “What is-” she cuts herself off, staring into her bedroom as if it had come to life, a pit forming in her stomach. It was over, it had to be over. Laura killed it, and yet, the pile of electronics that were laying in her floor are gone.
Something is wrong though. Why would the consciousness pull the trundle of her daybed out? Or set up Danny’s sleeping bag on her floor beside it? But the room is completely void of electronics outside of her lamps, what else could have done that?
“Ash?” “Yeah, I see.” Footsteps come down the hall, (Y/n) gripping onto Ash’s arm and pulling them slightly behind her. “Hello?” She swears that every muscle in her body relaxes when she sees Eli and Laura round the corner.
“Hey, Laura didn’t want to go home and I didn’t want you to be alone, so, we showered at mine and came here. Is that-” he pauses, pointing at Ash with furrowed brows, “Why are you and Ash coming out of the bathroom at the same time?” She flushes, playing with Ash’s fingers as she talks, “We were taking a shower?” “So you two,” his words fall off, pointing between the two of them with his brows still furrowed, “You two are.” “Yeah,” she smiles, kissing Ash’s cheek with a nervous smile, “Yeah, we are. We actually have been dating for a while.” “Oh, that makes tonight make a lot more sense.” Her flush gets brighter, looking around the room for anything that could change the subject, “So, have you two eaten since yesterday?”
⋆.˚✮🎧✮˚.⋆
It’s nine in the morning by the time that the four of them settle into her room, though even with the curtains drawn she can see that no one is sleeping. The energy is just slightly wrong. Ash laying beside her, not touching her past holding her hand. Laura laying flat on her back, the blanket of the trundle folded under her crossed arms as she stares at the ceiling. And Eli is laying on his side in the sleeping bag, staring up at her face. All too silent, all too wrong. Raw nerves laying exposed but not quite being covered.
“This is the worst sleepover I’ve ever had. Ya’ll wanna talk about people from school we would fuck? That’s always Danny’s go to.” It makes Eli laugh, her own laugh following it. “I can’t believe you humored him in that for almost a year while seeing someone.” “I had a cover to keep, Eli! It was a secret, we were scared!” (Y/n)’s giggle smooths out as they turn to look at Ash, “Plus, when it comes to Ash I’m a little selfish.” They smile, leaning up to peck her lips before rolling onto their side. An arm and leg both come to rest over her as they settle into their spot on her chest. The comment loosens Ash and Eli up well enough for them to actually get comfortable but Laura is still clearly on edge, eyes not moving from the ceiling.
“You okay, Laura?” She nods, tilting her head over to look at the couple above her before looking back over at Eli, “Yeah, I just, still feel a little alone.” “Anything we can do to help?” (Y/n)’s words come out on a yawn as she wraps both of her arms around Ash’s waist, holding them close to her as if she’s scared they’ll evaporate. “Hey Eli?” He hums, turning back to look at the beds, “Yeah?” “Could you maybe,” she takes a deep breath, “Could you maybe come lay with me?” He nods, sliding out of the sleeping bag and into the trundle as she turns to face (Y/n) and Ash. Awkwardly, Eli allows himself to snuggle against her as a big spoon, leaving the four teens so close that if they truly wanted to they all could touch. It’s not a solution, but for this once it’ll be enough. They can be enough, it takes a community to survive a loss, doesn’t it? So maybe it takes building your own family that can completely understand what’s happened to you so that you can survive the mourning after the world ends.
I know you said you have writers block do absolutely no rush at all!
But if you wanted to write for just Ash, what about like,,,something kinda like “just saying” by 5sos. Like the reader is a member of their crew’s partner (probs August or Farkus but the other two don’t have names) and he’s just an awful bf and Ash is obviously in love with them. Just like, begging them to leave the dude because Ash knows they could treat them so much better.
Totally cool is that’s out your comfort zone or somehow against your rules and I didn’t notice though! I’d never wanna over step
-🌸🌙 (same anon as AshxreaderxEli lol)

"He's such a fuckin' asshole sometimes," you grumble, picking at your food beside Ash, Caleb, and Jay. "Always with the weed and skating. It's so fucking annoying. I'm so tired of keeping his grades up,"
Ash bites the inside of their cheek as they begin to pick at their food as well.
Caleb and Jay exchange looks. They don't like it when the mom and dad of the group are fighting. To be fair, August was never the kind of dude you'd date to have a genuine relationship with. He's the kind of dude who wants someone to be there for him all the time and pick him up when he needs it. He doesn't want to put in effort for anyone else, shit, not even himself.
You're so tired of it these days.
His grades, his family life, shit with the group, just him in general. It's so tiring having to pick him up every time he slips and falls, something he could laugh off or do something to change the outcome of his own behaviors. It doesn't seem to ever click, though.
No matter how many times you fight.
No matter how many times you run to Ash for comfort and reassurance with a runny nose and heavy eyes.
No matter how many times Ash begs you to just break up with him and move on.
You're worried it'll ruin the group.
Maybe it'll ruin your friendship with Caleb and Jay, maybe even Farkus as well. Your friendship with Ash would probably be fine, considering they're very much aware of your frustration with August.
Everyone else around you is also probably very aware. The surrounding tables glance at you and your group, eyeing Farkus and August approaching with their cafeteria food. Farkus sits next to Ash, on their left, and August sits across from you.
They stare like you're gonna fight August or something.
You obviously don't.
But you really want to.
He's really sitting across from you like nothing is wrong. Again.
Ash glares at August, looking between him and you, also assuming a fight may break out.
"How was math?" he asks you.
You stay silent.
"Okay, damn," he grumbles.
"Trouble in paradise?" Farkus asks, receiving a well deserved slap on the shoulder from Ash.
You glare at Farkus just for some overkill.
"Why won't you talk to me?" August asks, tossing his plastic fork down to stare at you across the table.
"Cause you're a fucking asshole." you answer. "I'm not doing your work anymore."
"What?" he questions. "Dude, what'd I do?"
"Be an asshole, that's what you did!" you exclaim, "You promised we were gonna hang out and see The Sixth Sense, and you were out smoking and skating with Farkus all night."
"You're really that mad about that?"
"Yeah, I am! I do fucking everything for you, you little bitch!" you scoff, "The least you can do is go see a movie with me."
You quickly stand up, seeing the lunchroom was growing quiet, eyes piercing your skull as your peers stare. You grab your food, a pbnj, a cheesestick, and a bottle of milk, and sling your backpack over your shoulder before walking off, presumably to a teacher's room or maybe the bathroom. August gives you a deadly glare, glancing at Farkus for reinforcement.
Ash, biting their tongue, grabs their food and belongings as well before following after you. They walk with a little skip, trying to catch up to you, nearly losing their hat in the process. Caleb and Jay share looks before receiving another death glare from August.
Ash catches up to you with a frown, listening and watching as you sniffle and bite back tears. You lean against the lockers right outside the cafeteria, sinking down to sit on the cold linoleum tile floor. Your lunch sits in your lap, backpack at your side. Ash sits next to you, on your left, readjusting their snapback.
"Why is he such a dick?" you question rhetorically, taking a swig of your milk.
Ash shrugs, picking around at their chicken nuggets. "Cause he doesn't understand what an awesome partner he has. If I had someone like you, I'd never treat them that way."
They're trying to be smooth, but it's a bad place and bad time. Plus, you're a little oblivious to their true feelings, even though they've been begging you to break up with August for months to get with them for revenge, or something.
"What do you mean?" you squint.
"I'd be a better boyfriend than August," Ash shrugs. "I'd take you to go see movies, and skate with you, and do my own fucking homework, and just- do things with you! I'd be so much better for you, Y/n/n. Fuck..."
Your gaze on them softens.
You don't even really know what to say.
"Fuck, fuck, run!"
You and Ash both snap your heads to the left, watching as Caleb and Jay sprint out of the cafeteria, backpacks loosely strung over their shoulders. Caleb trails behind Jay, hands reaching for his shoulders as he attempts to keep pace with the curly haired blonde.
Jay and his bleached hair pass you and Ash, tossing his jacket at you. It's a black windbreaker with some patches on it, Slipknot, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, etcetera, with some blue details around the collar and pockets.
"I'll come get that off you later!" he exclaims, reaching a hand out for Caleb. His Nikes squeak loudly on the floor as he practically slips and slides for sprinting.
Caleb reaches out, throwing a peace sign and a smile at you from under his Korn hat. His black jacket is barely hanging onto his left shoulder considering he was not prepared to run in this moment.
After them is August, with a fresh bloody nosed and bruising eye.
Those sweet, sweet boys.
Farkus seems to have just sat there, as usual.
August chases after Caleb and Jay down the long main hallway, not giving you or Ash a second thought.
They look to you as the three boys fade into the sunset, wide-eyed and confused. Then they crack a smile and laugh.
"We've been telling you to break up with him, or else," they shrug.
You snort, folding up Jay's jacket in your lap. "Glad I'll always have you guys."
"Yeah, exactly, it's time to break up and stop worrying about everything. And maybe we could-"
I’m back from the trenches (being a real world overly stressed human who is too sad to write) and while working on Y2K prompts and watching American Mary I thought of you.
If you wannna, preferences on the Y2K characters finding out their partner got some sorta body mod (tongue splitting, sclera tats, corset piercings, stuff more extreme than the average lip piercing or wrist tattoo). Not sure if you’re still writing for Y2K but, if you’re willing.

RIP CJ, you would have HATED that this is the song I gave you. But you can't tell me that it's not a funny option.
Places like this were never their thing. Chris’ house was far too crowded, far too loud. Some awful song they didn’t quite know but vaguely recognized is blaring from his dad’s new speakers. If it had better bass it might even be shaking the windows. The sound’s headache inducing as they walk through the busy house, arms drawn to their chest in an attempt to make themself smaller. At some point this aimless wandering was focused on finding their friends, but that proved itself nearly pointless after their second lap. For all (Y/n) knows, their friends left them alone to “help them open up”, not that a plan like that could actually work on them. They had no plans on being anywhere but home tonight, let alone plans to make new friends.
The kitchen is easier to be in than the rest of the house, they’ve found a spot leaning against the counter, watching a group harass a guy from their English class. They should know his name, they know they should. PJ maybe? CJ? Yeah, definitely CJ. He’s backed against a bookshelf, Farkus leaning beside him to mock him while the taller guy’s short friend with the green hair films them. They’re debating-or maybe arguing- about music, CJ looking as bored as they feel as he deals with the situation he’s been backed into.
(Y/n) vaguely catches as CJ calls him a drone, leading to him scoffing as he repeats the words. The guy’s cup is slapped out of his hand, a loud shout of “That’s why your cup is not in our fucking hand, bitch,” following the action. CJ doesn’t react much, instead just looking around for a way out as the friend group around him breaks out into collective laughter.
It’s not like they’re friends with the guy -they’re not even fully positive that they’ve attached the right name to him- but they feel some odd draw to do something.
Pushing themself off the counter they cross over to the kitchen island, grabbing a new solo cup and splashing what they hope is just a shot of vodka into the cup. (Y/n)’s lip finds its way between their teeth, looking back and forth between the cup they’re now pouring coke into and the guy across the room. Their stomach churns, a strange burning sensation filling their gut as (Y/n)’s instincts scream out for them not to speak, and yet, “Hey, CJ!” He looks up to them, brows quirking as he pushes by Farkus and over the kitchen island. “You okay?” They offer him the drink they’d poured, smiling with silent pride as he takes it. “Yeah, I don’t,” CJ sighs, laughing slightly as he leans against the counter beside him, “I don’t pay him any mind. The cup was empty anyway. Really just put trash on the floor.” His words are punctuated with a sip of the drink, watching his classmate over the plastic brim.
They nod, lip back between their teeth as they look at him wordlessly. “But thank you though, really. It’s (Y/n), right? You uh, you sit behind me in English?” They nod, “Yeah, CJ was right, right?” He nods, “Yeah.” The energy between them is stiff, (Y/n)’s hands resting in their pockets as they thumb over the plastic bag waiting in their windbreaker. They’re not sure what to say to him, but from the way that they can feel eyes on them, they know they’ve inadvertently made the two of them a show. “So,” they drag the word out, slightly pulling the bag from their pocket, ensuring that he can see it, “You got a light?” It brings a smirk to his lips, an arm crossing over his chest as he looks them over.
“Look at you, real life of the party over here, huh?” He bumps their arm with his elbow, smiling as he pushes himself away from the counter. The beginning of a blush is flaring up in their cheeks, the attention making the nerves in their stomach feel as if they’ve been lit aflame. Since when are they the type to share? “Are you going to smoke with me or not?” He laughs, waving a hand to them as he turns towards the garage, “Come on then.” They don’t really talk on the way out of the kitchen, (Y/n) busying their hands as they fidget with the pack of rolling paper in their pocket.
CJ opens the door, holding it open for them with a slight wave into the room, “After you.” They give him a soft nod, walking down into the basement and sitting down on the step, “You got a thing about not letting people roll for you?” He shakes his head, bouncing around them to stand in front of the stairs with his arm back over his chest, “You go ahead.” The room is silent as (Y/n) breaks up a nug, looking down at the stair beside them as they drop the broken up pieces into a rolling paper. They can feel his eyes on the side of their face, making a lump slowly build in their throat. There’s a few times that their lips part in an attempt to speak to him just to close again as they realize they don’t know what to say.
“So, you really are this quiet outside of class, huh?” They nod, pulling the joint up as they twist the end of it closed, “Yeah, I uh, I guess I don’t have much to say.” They lift their hand, joint tucked between their fingers to offer it to him. “It’s your light, you first.” The boy shakes his head, pulling his lighter out to hand it to them, “It’s your herb.” A tight lipped smile crosses their mouth as they turn their hand over to accept the lighter. After passing it over, CJ walks back to their side, lowering himself onto the step next to them. They take a drag, passing the joint to them with the hint of a smile on their face. “So,” he hums before taking a hit, “Why’d you move here?” “My mom got a new job here after my parents got divorced and I didn’t want to live with my dad,” it’s a stoney and cold response, reaching out for the joint again. CJ nods, taking a sip off of his drink before bumping their shoulder with his, “So how much of that do I have to get into you before you become a conversationalist?”
The question drags a giggle out of them, bumping his shoulder back, “God, a whole one at least. Never been all that great at making friends.” “Maybe it’s because you don’t talk.” They hum, rolling their eyes as they pass the joint back, “Thank you, Captain Obvious. What do you even talk to strangers about?” He taps his chin, looking over to them with a smile, “What type of music do you listen to?”
“Woah dude, way too far,” they throw a hand up as they talk, leaning away from his side. He stares at them bewildered, slow blinking as he tries to comprehend the reaction until they start laughing. A real smile crossing their face for the first time since they got dragged out of the house. “I’m fucking with you. I don’t really have a set music taste, it’s just whatever speaks to me, you know? Like, I think the point of music is to feel something, so as long as it does that, who cares about the genre?” He nods, “You listen to any underground MCs? Because I know a few if you want some recs.” Their lip slides back between their lip, nodding as they look his face over, “Yeah, that would be really nice. Make me a mix and I’ll talk to you about it later.”
“You want me to make you a mix? Since when does making friends come with homework?” They smirk, waving the joint between them, “Well, if your recs are any good then it won’t be a problem for you.” His shoulder comes over to bump against theirs again with a smile, “There you go, you’re loosening up. But yeah, I’ll make you a mix.” “Bring it to me in class?” “For sure. Now, your turn.” “My turn?” He nods, taking the joint that they’re waving from them, “Yeah, ask me anything.” “And you’ll tell me the truth?” It earns them a nod, the smoke coming up to rest between his lips as he waits.
“What is it about hip-hop? What’s the draw?” He laughs, leaning back against the step as he offers the smoke over to them, “That’s just an extension of my question.” “No it’s not! I’m asking why you like your music, not what music you like. They’re different!” “Okay, okay. I don’t know it just, makes you think. It’s got more substance than the shit that’s on MTV.” They’re watching him intently as he speaks. CJ’s eyes are closed, hat tipping off of his head from the way he leans back. There’s a peace taking over his face that feels like a complete 180 from the way he was acting in the house. Lips slightly curved up at the corners as a hand rests on his chest. “Yeah, I can see that. It’s what makes you feel seen, right?” He nods, pointing a finger lazily up towards them, “Exactly. So, do you have a boyfriend back home?”
The question makes them choke, smoke getting caught in their throat as they cough. (Y/n)’s eyes are watering as they look at him, the smoke burning their senses as they pass him the last hit. “What?” “Do you have a boyfriend back home? Or one here, I guess.” They shake their head, “Why would that matter?” CJ sits up, blowing out smoke as he puts the roach out on the brick stair. “It’s a minute until midnight and the cute new kid who sits behind me in class finally talked to me.” A flush floods through their face, the heat of the newfound bloodrush so heavy that they can feel the warmth in their ears. “So that’s why you agreed to smoke with me?”
He shakes his head, turning fully towards them, “No I agreed to smoke with you because I’ve been dying to have a conversation with you. If you let me kiss you at midnight that would just be a bonus for me.” The nerves that were burning through them in the kitchen are suddenly lit back up. A burning, churning fear in their stomach as their hands begin to shake. This isn’t the attention that they’re used to, no one has ever admitted to seeing them like that. “I’ve never had a new year’s kiss before.” His eyebrows raise, tongue coming out to dart over his lips. “Well, if you wanted, we could change that in about thirty seconds.”
It’s enough to make them want to get up and run. This isn’t something that they’ve ever experienced, a pressure building up in their stomach and chest that they can’t quite place. Somewhere they can hear the countdown starting as his eyes search theirs. “Yeah. Yeah, let’s change that.” It comes with a giggle, them reaching out to grab his jaw and slowly leaning in. The countdown hits one as their lips connect, this soft slow motion that makes their stomach churn and their cheeks burn. They can vaguely recognize the churning “butterflies”, their eyes still lidded as they pull away from him. “Well, that was a first.”
CJ’s eyes blow wide, staring at them, “Was that your first kiss? Like, ever?” It makes them laugh, the sound matching with the flickering of the lights that almost makes (Y/n) seem like magic. “No, no, just the first time I’ve kissed a stranger.” A playful hand falls onto his chest, “A stranger? I know what type of music you listen to and you tasked me with making you a mix. You could at least call us acquaintances.” The laugh grows stronger, (Y/n) leaning over their knees as their shoulders rock with the sound. “You’re right, we’re at least acquaintances.” He nudges their arm again, playing with his lighter as he talks, “Then, maybe if you like the mix, we could get dinner and talk about it?” The idea is terrifying, but somehow the concept is electrifying in a way they adore. “Yeah, yeah, it’s a date.”
