Strange Modification of Teeth Around The World

In a little remote village known as Mantawaian, natives are known to pierce and tattoo their skin but they also chisel their teeth. As it turns out, there is an old myth that says that if a spirit is not happy with the body, it can leave that body, causing its death. They think that if they make the body look prettier – and one way, in their opinion that this can be done, is by chiseling the teeth off – their spirits will stay with the body for longer periods of time.

Ohaguro means to dye one’s teeth black. While people in our own circles may find it a striking thing to do, people in Southwest Asia say it’s a must have for keeping teeth healthy and free of cavities.

In some parts of the world, pulling out the front teeth is considered to be part of a beautification ritual. Both old and young alike are having it done, while those who do not are sometimes laughed at and made fun of. Others are having the entirety of their gums died black, saying that it makes their smile more beautiful and enchanting.

In Japan, Yaeba teeth, which literally means “double tooth” is one of the hottest new trends. It is thought to be the most chic and sexy look, which is also construed to be cute and innocent.

Anthropologists have been studying Viking teeth and found that a good many of them are filed and/or painted. Although they are unsure as to why this was done, they think it may have been to show some type of achievement or to use as a scare tactic against enemies. One thing is clear – that they did not learn this practice from the area where they originated. The only other place this practice is found is in the Americas.

On some localities, an oral modification known as “tongue splitting” is being undertaken by a great many people. While it can be done in dental settings and piercing parlors, others who may not have the money to have such procedures done are opting to attempt it themselves using sharps and dental floss, which can be incredibly dangerous.

So I just found out that I have a natural flaw that is an expensive and coveted look in Japan.

It's called Yaebe Teeth. Google it, and you'll see. All my life I've been shy of smiling with my teeth because they're crooked and flawed; but apparently they're all the rage in Japan, because it makes you look 'more approachable' because you aren't 'perfect'. I don't know if I should be insulted or take it as a compliment?
