Tommy Watson (Yannima Pikarli Watson, c.1935–2017) was one of the greatest painters of Ngaanyatjarra Art and a leading figure in Western Desert Art. A senior Pitjantjatjara law man and founding artist of the Irrunytju Art Centre, he transformed the colours, light and spiritual presence of his Country into bold, luminous fields of abstraction. Rather than depicting sacred iconography directly, his paintings evoke the power of places such as Anumarapiti, Walu and Wipu through extraordinary colour, texture and movement.
