Ye Meng's beauty is superior, which she knows and deliberately uses to charm that little younger enigmatic handsome man, Li Jinyu.

What I like about both the novel and the drama version of Deep Affection Eyes is that Ye Meng is bold and flirty, but at the same time she ultimately won't waste her time if her affection and attention remain unanswered. In the novel, she eventually stops texting him because life gets in the way and he doesn't respond to her advances, so she figures he's not interested, and in the drama he tells her point blank he's no good, and so she attempts to move on. And in both cases, he essentially freaks out when she stops reaching out, and eventually asks her if she's still interested - which, with his intimacy issues, is HUGE and the best indicator of how much he grew to like her.

He tossed the book back to him with an expression of surprise. "Young man, don't you use the internet? If you want to hear this kind of toxic inspirational nonsense, this sister next to me could compose three volumes for you in minutes."

Ye Meng gave him a side-eye: "Are you insulting me?"

"No, I’m complimenting you," Li Jinyu sprawled back lazily, tapping his foot slightly, his eyelids forming a cool, indifferent arc as he looked at her, even adopting a posture of settling old scores: "Weren't you quite the talker? Didn't you say you would build an empire for me? Where's that empire? Where is it?"

Bwahahaha, he is so petty.

One of the things I really dig about Deep Affection Eyes as an adaptation is that, in spite of the narrative going into a different direction compared to the novel, the mains still feel like their novel selves, with the caveat that Li Jinyu is visibly more soft around the edges, because his trauma in the drama is way less severe than the one in the novel. But I don't feel like I am watching AU versions of the characters I loved in the novel - it's still them, even if the universe they're in is different and a bit more soft.
