Albert was the first King since 1660 to not truly own a Royal Yacht, the last, named the Victoria & Albert III, was decommissioned just before the outbreak of war and left the King without such a vessel, not wanting to appear indulgent while the nation continued to pay for the damages of war, he had not commissioned the construction of a new vessel.

However, the draw of the sea was irresistible and the moment the opportunity arose for him to travel to South Africa, Albert couldn’t help but choose to travel by sea. His voyage was to be handled by his own Navy and he had chosen which of his warships they would commandeer. It was the battleship HMS Vanguard that would carry the Royal Party and he was relying on the company of one of his favourite Commanders James Norrington to serve as Captain and to help keep the 2,000 naval men in line as they accompanied them to Cape Town.

James would also be in command of the escorting fleet consisting of the aircraft carrier, HMS Implacable, the cruisers Cleopatra and Diadem and thedestroyers, St James and St Kitts. Albert knew it was no small task but he could not travel unescorted and he was sure James was capable and up to the job. Not to mention that he was least likely to try and politely kick him out of the bridge as a greater many of the captains of his ships enjoyed doing.

It was in the bridge shortly after waving goodbye to the crowds at Portsmouth that the King was stood, looking over the deck below, his hands behind his back and thoroughly enjoying the feel of the sea in just those few short hours. “It -should be a –crime to be on shore for -so long.” He said quietly but smiled over to James, “I am –sorry to have -stolen you away from your family, but -I wanted a –proven -commander with us on this –tour.” There was a moment when Albert just regarded him fondly before adding, “That and I know I —can talk about sailing with you and you won’t –get annoyed.” A partial tease as he glanced down at his wife and daughters as they tried to get their sea legs.
