SOCIAL DISTANCING DAY 172. Backstory: last Saturday I was stung 5 times or so by yellowjackets I mowed over, then spent several nights spraying poison down the hole in the ground where their nest was and feeling like a real bad guy, a murderer. It put me into kind of a funk all week, spending each night spraying poison foam down a hole in the front yard. Then today! I was trimming some bushes and chatting with @audreyshepard and @mike.shepard.2020. Suddenly I felt a sting on my face—another yellowjacket nest in the bushes. The end of the yellowjacket saga: on our last day on Orcas, the yellowjackets had made significant progress rebuilding, but more of the nest had fallen off overnight. And then the morning after we spotted the nest-building, tragedy had struck (I think). Two large pieces of the nest had fallen to the ground. I found the mystery guy and this is the treasure he's gifting me!!!! It's a mummified opossum with an old insect nest in its body cavities. I'm assuming it's a yellow jacket nest because they nest underground in abandoned burrows. Also they are scavengers.
