These Chickadees are so entertaining to watch! She has spent the last two nights in the box but at 5.20 AM, he will come in and try to wake her up. There is a lot of talking until she finally does, and then he leaves 😆

why did i have to be born a person. why couldn’t i be a little bird in the mountains with no people around whose only issue is gathering little twigs and building a little nest? #whynot #whywelovenature #birdwatching #birdphotography #birding #mountainlife #seclusion #nestbuilding #naturelovers (at Catalina Foothills, Arizona) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ce3781hJZoCQFYX6LqHhWuq5nbqkcMAYU--VWE0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Nest building 101 by monte stinnett https://flic.kr/p/2ka9aAA
And then the morning after we spotted the nest-building, tragedy had struck (I think). Two large pieces of the nest had fallen to the ground. The yellowjackets were busily rebuilding, but it meant that we had a fantastic view into the nest and could watch them tending their larvae. #yellowjacket #aerialyellowjacket #dolichovespulaarenaria #nestbuilding #yellowjacketnest https://www.instagram.com/p/BzmRPxUhCFo/?igshid=pzwtbvi0nt7o
The female has made a lot of progress on the nest today. She seems to be done with the moss, mostly, and is now adding grasses and fluff. The male will always seek her out to give her a snack. I love how communicative they are and how much I am learning.
At the Nest Improvement store.
The Robins
are having more than one brood per season, and since I have seen them gathering more nesting material, I put up the little bowl with mud and leaves and grass up again to help them out a bit. This one apparently took a good portion, and then came straight to the feeder. Happy Friday!
The end of the yellowjacket saga: on our last day on Orcas, the yellowjackets had made significant progress rebuilding, but more of the nest had fallen off overnight. A very small, incompetent colony? A regular part of nest building? #aerialyellowjacket #yellowjacket #dolichovespulaarenaria #nestbuilding #yellowjacketnest #orcasisland https://www.instagram.com/p/Bzq7Y-CBFbC/?igshid=uuhhfpsrza6q
