And every time I step up in the building Everybody hands go up
Prince Jeongan aka Yi Bang-won aka Taejong of Joseon - the antagonist who is the hero in his own story.
thinking about how yi seunggye and bangwon are both driven by shame. for seunggye, it’s a matter of virtue. if he gives something up, if he gives in to his ambitions, he becomes someone who will feel shame. he hides the shame of his story, to the point that he bows his head to lee ingyeom, because that is the least shameful thing to do.
meanwhile bangwon is driven by the urge to never succumb to shame and act in the way he views as shameful. he won’t break in the state tribunal, because that would make him a chicken. he won’t bow to or shake hands with hong inbang, because he views hong inbang as cowardly, someone who has done something bangwon views as the epitome of shameful. seeing his father brought down and lower his head in shame broke his trust in his father. he is always proactively acting to avoid feeling that way. the lee brothers made him feel lower than he ever had, so he killed them.
in a way, it all connects back to pride. bangwon and his father are prideful in many different ways. his father because he wants to protect his virtue, his place as a protector of the people. bangwon’s pride has nothing to do with the so called goodness, but justice. like he tells hong inbang, he has no desire to be good, and if he is not, at least he is just. he’s made his peace with having bloody hands, taking responsibility, and even though he’s not the only one to kill—sambong and other ‘heroes’ all build their plans with death, in a way—he’s the only one who can always view his actions through the greater lens. and i mean that not as in he is never swayed, but that once his path changes—from sambong to himself, from follower to leader, etc—he never hesitates, and never deviates. anything less than surety would be shameful to him. so he never stops.
my love, i have carved many a heart out--------- i have been wrist-deep in others' blood, i have reached through flesh and rib and put that blood to my lips-- i have had my hands in it, i have dripped it like tears upon my skin, i have dripped it like tears upon my cheeks my love, i have killed------------ i have had men scream and bleed, i have had them torn in pieces--- i have hurt them in such ways, in ways so v i l e that they would never know, nor want, nor d r e a m of peace i have torn lovers and families alike a p a r t i have hurt and i have drowned, i have betrayed and i have lied, i have bled and oh, how i have sacrificed for this country i have----------- done it all, all a man can do, i have all but died i have loved, i have given up all my faith and gone against my pride, i have become a monster of the people, worse than any nightmare in the night---- my love, the heart i tore out------ was mine my love, you were the heart

VidUKon roundup
So I managed to complete 4 (four!) premieres for VidUKon all MCTNA and a back catalogue vid for vidder's choice. They were:
Green Light for Premieres - a SeonHwi breakup/makeup vid
Through Me (The Flood) for @frayadjacent12's Embodiment vidshow, a Seo Hwi character study focused around his relationship with his chronically ill and damaged body
Love SOS for my vidshow How Do You Love? Like a fist, like a knife - a SeonHwi vid centred on violence and intimacy and their intersection in MCTNA
All Yi Bang-won does is win for Antagonism - an Yi Bangwon character study
Don't Blame Me: non premiere submitted to Vidder's Choice - a SeonHwi vid centred around how deeply unhinged Hwi is for Seonho.
Also if anyone wants to check out my vidshow which is all about violence and intimacy and how these things intersect, here is a link to all the vids and accompanying notes:
I know war. You don’t know war.
