Enjoy Chiang Mai’s globally famed Light Festival with a few handy tips!
It sure sounds and feels good to #travel half-way across the globe for a mesmerizing festival like that of Loy Krathong and Yee Peng. And, it is totally worth! The festival makes Chiang Mai even more exciting at this time of the year and the # light festival lives up to all that hype. You’d definitely want to make the best out of this visual spectacle. Here are some #tips:
Hotels fill up real quick for the festival and as the date comes near prices go bananas. Book your accommodation in Chiang Mai well in advance.
Reach early; at around 4 p.m. to grab a good spot at Lanna Duthanka Buddhist Center.
Avoid bringing a personal vehicle. Use shared public transportation. The traffic is really crazy around the area.
Don’t buy lanterns that you find being sold at the entrance of the venue. The organizers of the event sell their white lanterns for security standards. At Mae Jo each lantern costs around a 100 baht.
Skip uncovered shoulders and shorts! You’ll be checked at the entrance. Remember, it is a religious ceremony. Dress appropriately and also remain quiet during the hour-long prayer prior to the lantern release.
Come into the Light: Celebrate Loy Krathong & Yee Peng Lantern Festival
Thousands of paper lanterns floating into the sky on a full-moon night- something you’ve only seen in pictures, haven’t you? Wouldn’t it be amazing if you could see it for real? The #yee-peng festival is enough to set the charm. It is one of the most awe-inspiring global festivals and is unique to northern #thailand. This #lantern festival is exactly what you’d imagine about since it is particularly celebrated on the full moon of the 12th month according to the Thai calendar.
This year (2018), the Thai “Festival of Lights” is due to start on 21st November and end on the 23rd November. It’s fascinating to know that this #asian celebration has Brahmin roots closely tied with the ancient Lama Kingdom. Earlier, the Yee Peng Lantern Festival used to be celebrated as an individual event to mark the beginning of the cool season after the monsoons. But, your visit to Thailand around this time will be even more rewarding! Now-a-days, Loy Krathong is also celebrated alongside.
