Zhao Yuanzhou isn't one to brag (most of the time) but he's somewhat of an expert at things pertaining to the beautiful but aloof Zhuo Yichen.
He knows the meaning of every dour glare, every frown, every tight press of his lips. He is fluent in the silent way he holds himself apart from everyone else, not because he desires isolation but because he is careful. Gauging and unsure about how to connect with others without being too much or too little.
If nothing else, Zhao Yuanzhou can relate.
This all roundabout ways to say, he knows his Xiao Zhuo-daren.
And the man who is currently walking through the marketplace inspecting the wares of every stall that catches his eye is definitely not his Xiao Zhuo-daren.
Sure, the resemblance is uncanny - - from the way his eyes sparkle at something of interest, to the way his lips stretch in a smile when the man he is walking with dips his ear closer to him to better hear him speak.
The delightful blush that colours his pale cheeks when his companion replies, is so sublimely fetching, that it takes Zhao Yuanzhou a moment to register the said companion arm-and-arm with Xiao Zhuo-daren's twin, and bristles at the sight of him.
The man who looks like that old demon Cheng Huang is smiling down at the not-Xiao-Zhuo-daren. Smiling in the way that is clearly deep with adoration and doting. He doesn't have to know humans to know that that man is absolutely besotted with not-Xiao-Zhuo-daren.
Zhao Yuanzhou knows enough about humans to know love when he sees it.
And the not-Xiao-Zhuo-daren seems to glow under his gaze. Carefully, the other man guides him along, weaving through the sea of people until they are one with the crowd.
Unfolding himself from where he had been drinking on a rooftop, he smoothly tucks away his bottle, casting down for one last sight of the loved up couple.

ramblings on helian yi and yiyuan
read qiye, they said. it will be healing, they said.
...nobody prepared me for the reality of Helian Yi brainrot.
like, do I think yiyuan is a good, healthy dynamic? can I see them realistically working it out? no. but something just *gets* me about how they're equals, two birds of the same feather. how seamlessly they plot and scheme together. how you can tell that once upon a lifetime, they really were soulmates.
and that's it, honestly. starcrossed soulmates not meant to be is just such a delicious trope. the perfect trainwreck. the flavor.
they had their chance and Helian Yi ruined it. or, maybe, even if he hadn't, they still couldn't have been together.
they are too similar where they should have been different, too different where they should have been similar.
there is this famous poem in Chinese called 《长恨歌》, “the song of everlasting regret”, about emperor Tang Xuanzong and his favorite concubine that he had to put to death. in the final lines, the two make an oath for their next lives:
在天愿作比翼鸟,在地愿为连理枝 "In heaven above let us be one-winged birds and only in pairs fly, On earth let us be neighboring trees with our branches intertwined."
the one-winged bird is a creature in Chinese mythology who was born imperfect and can only fly with its mate. it’s a symbol for eternal dependence on each other through multiple lives, the deep bond between lovers, inseparable friendship.
and yiyuan is the opposite of that. two birds of the same feather, yet not of the one-winged sort.
I'm happy that Beiyuan finally gets his HE, that in his seventh life, he can leave the shackles of his suffering behind. but still. when I finish this novel, it's not xiyuan I'm thinking about. it's yiyuan and their ill-fated destiny. the could’ve-beens that weren’t.
tl;dr of this entire rant: help I'm deep in yiyuan/HLY brainrot, Alexa play "we could've had it all"
