YOU MADE IT WEIRD WITH PETE HOLMES (2011-; Skeet Ulrich)
Hi, everyone!
Comedy Central recently posted the full video of Pete Holmes' 2013 special Nice Try, The Devil on YouTube.
If you haven't seen Pete's comedy before, he has a real "fun dad" energy to him, and his sets are apparently incredible in person (but it's difficult to capture that electricity on camera).
Either way, it's an entertaining hourlong special, and a little bird told me he's already taped his newest hour, so that should be out soon!
And if you haven't listened to/watched his amazingly informative podcast, You Made It Weird, definitely give it a shot. Pete gets guests to open up in ways they wouldn't otherwise (like his epic 3-episode journey with Bo Burnham).
As I had mentioned with last month's post about Bo's best interviews, I am trying to compile all of my research before shifting away from Bo
Enjoy the special on YouTube, and keep it here for more comedy fun! ✌🏼🐔
Pete: [...] You had a white baseball cap in high school, let's be honest. Andrew: One of my favorite Death Cab songs: [impersonating Ben Gibbard] white baseball cap... [pause] He put out a new song the other day, and I listened to it [...] and it just-- at this point... Pete: In my life... Andrew: I don't want to hear it anymore. [Pete wheezing] I love his music! But, it's-- I'm getting tired of it. Pete: I want to be real with you, because we're circling, we're waiting to be cleared to land this conversation plane at the terminal marked: Is It Time to Hang It Up? Andrew: Is it time to hang it up?

Pete: "I'll join you in the heresy pool in saying that I think Christ was modelling what happens to all of us. He would be saying, like, 'oh, if you think death is a big deal [...] I'll even let you kill me. [...]'"
David: "'Go ahead.'"
Pete: "The Bible doesn't tell the story of the Zombie Jesus. I forget the exact phrasing but it's, like, 'a body of light,' or something-- so he was [appearing to people] in another form. All of that, I think, is a metaphor because it's the only way we can talk about stuff like this, with images and story. [...] This is a Richard Rohr: he goes, 'metaphor means always true, sometimes really happened.
David: "I love that! That's so good!"
Pete: "Because literalism is, like, the lowest level of meaning. [...] The real meaning we can't talk about directly. "
Pete: I think this might be one of the reasons we love movies and we love TV-- they're not bullshitting you. [...] It's not going, "Are you sure you want to hear this?" It's just giving you, like, "You asked for this! Here's the show!"
Anna: Right, and as I'm talking to you I'm realizing that that is usually [...] my safety net of the show. It's like, I get to put whatever I want in the show, [...] and then the audience chooses if they partake, but I don't have to apologize for bringing it up. [...]
Pete: You're going to love writing a book, because you're like, "Dude, you're reading. Every word you read is you agreeing to a contract of you're coming into my space." If I was just standing on a street corner and going like, "I'm not sure my mother and I loved each other appropriately, and yes, I'm conceding that I had a hand in that, but I was a child!" then that's literally a crazy person. [...] You can say anything in a book, because you're reading. Stop if you don't want to read it, and same with a TV show.
pete: we have boy bands now but they're all "k-pops."
nora: yes, it's all k-pop and they're all sort of, like, beautiful and they're wearing lip gloss. My teenagers--
pete: it looks like Magic the Gathering characters.
nora: yes, they're so into it and I'm like, this is so fascinating. I loved the Backstreet Boys in high school but I wasn't, like, writing fanfic about them hooking up with each other and that's what these kids are doing-- and again, I find it all so fascinating. I think it's so cool and also I never would have done it.
think of how many books there are in this world.. no one has read them all
think of all the books that have yet to be written.. no one could’ve read any of those.. they have yet to be written..
think of all the movies and the documentaries that have been made..
no one has taken in all of the information that exists in this world.. yet everyone has a belief system.. and everyone is basing a belief system on incomplete information.. because nobody has taken in everything there is to take in..
Soo to be adamant that you’re right when the very next book on the bookshelf might change your mind.. is very arrogant..
It’s okay to go “here’s where I’m at right now.. here’s what I believe..” but still love that feeling of wonder
I can’t believe the “Miss You Mitch” audio isn’t on here I’m DEVASTATED
