“Do you want to get married?”
Yoongi looked over at Jungkook from his spot next to him on their bed. The younger was staring at his soulmate mark with a serious look on his face. He was lying down with his arm held over his head, his other hand tracing the colorful birds in flight that made up the mark. Each of the birds flew a few spaces behind the other in a spiral pattern that went off his hand, providing the opportunity for his soulmate to complete it when they held hands. Yoongi closed his laptop halfway and pushed it towards the end of the bed to give the other his full attention. The screen’s bluish light dimmed, allowing the colors of the TV on mute across the room to play across their features with dancing shadows.
“Um, sure,” Yoongi said hesitantly, turning to face Jungkook. Silhouetted against the setting summer sun, he seemed artful and dramatic for a brief time.
Jungkook snorted, dropping his arm to the bed with a thud and turning his head to face Yoongi, effectively shattering the artsy illusion. “So much confidence in that response, hyung.”
“Kook-ah, what did you expect? We’re in bed at 9 p.m. on a Friday night. We’re already married,” Yoongi joked. He rested his hands lightly on Jungkook’s stomach and got more serious. “What prompted you to ask this now?”
Jungkook sighed and turned back to look up at the ceiling. “It’s just that…our soulmate marks don’t match.”
Yoongi glanced down at his own mark winding around the opposite arm as Jungkook’s, falling off his hand in a way that would allow it to connect perfectly with his other half. The musical notes were beautiful and simple, and Yoongi had always hoped that whoever his soulmate ended up being would be just as perfect, but then he had met Jungkook, who blew all those expectations out of the water.
Jungkook was ten times better than the soulmate the universe had chosen for him.
Yoongi could say this with honesty, having met the man he was supposed to end up with. It had been early in his relationship with Jungkook and almost ruined it completely, but it all worked out for the best in the end. Hoseok was nice and all, and he was Yoongi’s soulmate in every other sense besides romantic, but Hoseok was his best friend. He didn’t make Yoongi’s heart beat as hard as Jungkook did.
“I know,” Yoongi agreed, able to tell Jungkook had more that he wanted to say.
“And-and we-we don’t have sex. Like you’re completely celibate now because of me.” Jungkook had started using his hands to talk.
“I don’t care about that Kook-ah.”
Yoongi honestly didn’t. He had known Jungkook was asexual long before he started to pursue the younger. Jungkook was the president of their LGBT program at school. He didn’t exactly keep it a secret.
“I know you don’t and that’s part of the problem. Or well, not the problem, because it’s not an issue. It’s like the opposite of an issue. You’re just so freaking perfect and you weren’t even meant for me. Hell, I don’t know who was meant for me, but I already know they can’t be as understanding or-or-or as patient as you. And everyone just keeps telling me that you can’t have a real relationship with someone that isn’t your soulmate. I’m terrified that one of these days you’re going to realize it. That this isn’t a real relationship and leave me, but I-I don’t want that. I don’t even really think that’ll happen, because we’re truly happy. I want you to marry me so that my stupid friends can fucking stop putting these doubts into my head,” Jungkook ranted, his voice getting higher and higher pitched the longer he talked. His eyes were wide as he glanced back at Yoongi.
Yoongi furrowed his eyebrows, “So you want to get married to prove something to your friends? What kind of people are you hanging around with anyway? Wait, is it someone I know? Because I can have Seokjin fight them.”
“No, sorry, no. That came out wrong. I don’t want to marry you to prove I’m in a ‘real’ relationship to my friends,” Jungkook instantly backtracked, his arms waving above him as if to erase the words. “I want to marry you because the more they talked about how our relationship wasn’t a true relationship because we aren’t soulmates and we aren’t sleeping together, the more I realized that it was a true relationship. Like, we’re in a full-blown adult relationship with love and respect and communication and shit.”
“Oh. Okay. Yeah, sure. Let’s get married then,” Yoongi said with a nod. “Because we love each other and don’t need the universe telling us who we need to end up with. Soulmates don’t have to be romantic.”
“I think everyone got that when you told Hoseok that you couldn’t possible develop romantic feelings for someone who actively fanboys over Twice,” Jungkook pointed out. “Twice isn’t even that bad.”
“All their music sounds the same, Jungkook. I’m not going to get into this with you again tonight,” Yoongi said, turning with a huff to retrieve his laptop from where he had pushed it away.
Jungkook let out a laugh before tugging on Yoongi’s sleeve to get him to bend down and kiss him. “I love you.”
“I love you too,” Yoongi mumbled against his boyfriend’s lips.
Yoongi had barely managed to turn back to his work and refocus before Jungkook spoke up again. “Don’t think I didn’t notice that you’re too soft to fight anyone and had to propose recruiting Seokjin to fight your battles.”
“Shut up,” Yoongi grumbled, pulling the pillow out from behind him to hit his boyfriend in the face.
Oh wait. Sorry. Hit his fiancé in the face.
