Alright, y'all knew it was coming. I'm gonna talk about the possible familial connection between Kaito and Toma. Please bear in mind that this is only a theory and the speculation of a number of fans. It is not confirmed and may not ever be. There may even be more details in the future disproving it. That being said, the theory can be broken down into 2 key points:
1. Kaito is Toma's son
They both embody the virtue of Wisdom and bear the title of Warrior of the Skies. This is a very loose connection, but what if it's not just an assumed role, but an inherited one unique to Kaito? In Episode 2, Yoshie tells Kaito over the phone that she came to visit him in Tokyo to tell him something urgent. However, their conversation gets cut off due to the youja invasion, preventing her from continuing. When Kaito later finds his grandma, she tells him that she knew he always wanted to be a Samurai Trooper, and that she was the reason he was rejected by the DST. Then, she says Kaito is one of the chosen before passing away.
Here's what I want to know. Was the "thing" Yoshie had been meaning to tell Kaito only about her knowing that he wished to be a trooper? Or was there something more in connection to that? She did say afterwards that he was a chosen one, but how could she have known? Was she informed by the DST? I doubt it since Kaito gasped in surprise when Yoshie revealed that she knew of his desire, which means he not only kept his activities a secret from his grandmother, but probably hid her contact from the DST when he applied because he didn't want her finding out later. So.... what more could it be that she wanted to tell Kaito?
Theoretically, it would be about his lineage as the heir to the armor of the sky. That Toma is his father, and that he was a trooper just as Kaito aspired to be. Maybe, Yoshie, after finding out her grandson tried out at the DST, felt worried he would endanger himself as her own son had years before (Toma did almost die multiple times), and personally asked them to block his acceptance into the organization. She knew he would be chosen like his father, so it only made her more determined to seek Naste's (who she had met before; see below) understanding in rejecting their future Sokyu bearer. Later, Yoshie felt guilty about this and decided to tell her grandson the whole truth, going to Tokyo to do so.
As for why Kaito doesn't know about Toma, his bio on the official website states that he was raised by his grandmother, which means he most likely never met his parents. Toma could've been extremely busy (not unlike his own father Genichirou) and handed off his son to his mother to raise (which would make him a deadbeat ALSO like Genichirou lol). However, the most probable explanation would be Toma wanting to protect his son while distancing himself so the government or youja forces wouldn't go after him. The absence of Kaito's mother, on the other hand, can be explained quite easily. She could've died early on, or divorced her husband. Maybe she and Toma were never even married; Kaito could've been the result of a one night stand. Either way, if this theory is proven true later, I don't think the identity of Kaito's mother will be important. So, all this could point to Toma being Kaito's father. Let's go to the next point in this theory:
2. Yoshie is Toma's mother
Previously, I asked if the name of Toma's mother was ever revealed, and I got some lovely responses from the fandom. @samuraitroopersfanzine in particular (thank you so much!), provided me a link to the Yoroiden Samurai Troopers fan wiki where I managed to find more info about this topic. Before, I remember seeing the first and only mention of Toma's mother being in Tenkuuden, the CD drama that focuses on his character. The wiki has scans of her design, and she looks strikingly similar to Yoshie.
I went to listen to the audio drama again, and yes, her name was never brought up. She was portrayed as a lively woman, whom Toma's friends were surprised to hear was his mother since she was so young (she had him at 18 & was only 32 in Tenkuuden). She was also very loud, friendly, & seemed to treat Toma more like an equal rather than a son. All of it pointed to her acting very young/outgoing for her profession as an international journalist and Toma's mother; Toma even describes her as a high flyer. That sounds a lot like Yoshie.
Yoshie looks pretty young for a grandparent which would make sense if she was Toma's mom, since she'd only be 67 in the current day (18+14+35 years according to the established timeline). At the beginning of Episode 2, Yoshie says she doesn't like being called "granny" by Kaito because it's not "rock n' roll" i.e. it makes her feel old. She would rather be called "Yoshie-chan" since it may have made her feel more in-tune with her youth. Both Toma's mother and Yoshie are women who don't let age get in the way of enjoying life. This is also why the former divorced her husband (she didn't like dealing with his mad scientist antics & loved her own job too much), and the latter told Kaito (after he set her soul free) to live a fulfilling life.
Since Toma's mother's name was never revealed, she could be called anything at this point in time. Yoshie could be her given name, while Uesugi could be either her maiden name or the surname of another man she remarried (unlikely, since this would complicate things). Nevertheless, Sunrise could make all of it fit very easily with the vagueness of her identity. Interestingly, this particular hc has gained traction among Japanese fans too. In Tenkuuden, Toma's mom also met the other troopers, as well as Naste, which means she would've been aware of the whole truth about the Samurai Troopers once they went public and Naste founded the DST. This brings us back to Yoshie blocking Kaito's acceptance: she asked Naste, as the mother of her close friend to help prevent said friend's son from experiencing the same pain as his father. Naste, understanding her worries and wanting to do a favor for Toma, agrees to reject Kaito. Lastly, as she was the one who brought up Kaito since he was young, Yoshie hid the identity of the boy's father for his safety and decided to only tell him once he was old enough to defend himself from evil (15, the optimal age for one to become a trooper, which Kaito is).
Now that Kaito has officially joined the DST as a Samurai Trooper, and Yoshie has passed on, there remains a lot to be seen in the development of this theory. Will Toma show up later and meet Kaito? Will there be a connection between them like a lot of us believe? Maybe a small one, not exactly father and son. Maybe none at all. All of these hints could just be red herrings at the end of the day. But there is sill a chance that the "Kaito is Toma's child" theory may come true. Personally, I'd love if it did, since Kaito deserves to know more of his living family members and receive guidance as part of the next generation of Samurai Troopers. Whatever goes, I just hope both of them talk to each other at some point in the anime.
Strict old boss lady is such a real character type and its one of my favorites. Bonus points if they have a soft spot for something.

KIra's ghost dad is still making new Stand Users, except this time it doesn't work because the guy he shoots somehow deflects the arrow. Could it be because he's an alien?
No, no he is not.
Or is he...?
No, he isn't.
