PUPPY LOVE (PARRWARD)
She shouldn’t be sad. Kat knows that.
Why should she feel sad when one of the dogs at the shelter is finally going to get her forever home? Her favourite one too! Watching through the glass window, Kat can’t help but feel a tightening in her chest seeing Juno trying to get her soon-to-be owner’s attention while she is talking with the shelter’s vet. After having seen Juno grown up over these past two years, Kat developed a fondness for the pup, well she hasn’t been a pup in a long time, but in Kat’s eyes, she is still a baby.
“Everything going alright with the girl?” Jane asks once she exits the room on the other side of the window. Kat nods, without taking her eyes off the girl playing around in the other room. “Looks like Juno’s found herself the perfect gal.”
“Yeah.” Kat breathes out.
“Kat,” says Jane in a warning tone, placing one hand on her shoulder.
“I know. I know. I’m not supposed to get attached to the dogs. It’s in the volunteer handbook,” Kat replies, looking down at her sneakers. In her defence, she doesn’t get attached to the dogs ever. She cares about them sure, but she’s always so happy when they are welcomed in a new family and get to leave the shelter. Juno is the only exception.
“I was going to say that you don’t have to keep torturing yourself by supervising them. I’m sure Lina won’t mind that you leave them alone for the last 10 minutes. I think she told me this morning that she knows the girl anyways.” Jane gave Kat a sympathetic smile before looking back through the window. “Want me to go in to tell her that you’ll be back when she’s ready to leave?”
“No, it’s fine, I’ll go in. I might as well go say goodbye to Juno at the same time.”
“You sound like you’re talking about saying goodbye to a dying relative.” Jane snorts.
“I’m a Gemini, I’m allowed to be dramatic from time to time.”
“I thought you said Leos were the dramatic ones.”
“They are! I mean have you met Anne?” Kat gestures wildly as she speaks, hitting her hand on the wall.
“Careful, darling. At this rate, you’ll go in there all bruised up and Juno’s going to be all worried about you.” Jane snickers as she watches Kat wince and rub her hand.
Right.
She still has to say goodbye. Kat takes a few seconds to calm down, then opens the door to find a head of brown curls flick up and an overenergized dog running immediately in her direction.
“Hey, there Juno,” says Kat, bending down to ruffle the dog’s black fur on her back before turning her attention to the woman still sitting on the floor. “I was just dropping in to let you know that I’ll be back in 10 minutes when you’re ready to leave.”
“Sounds good, anything else I need to know?”
Kat shakes her head. “This might sound strange, but can I say goodbye to Juno?”
It’s Catherine’s turn to shake her head. “That doesn’t sound strange at all.”
Kat feels relief washing over her. At least, this would feel less weird. Juno has always been a more hyper dog, even on her bad days, but Kat manages to calm her down a bit so she can say goodbye. It does feel a bit ridiculous, but again, Juno is like her baby.
“Look at you, all grown up. You’ve finally found yourself a forever home, huh? I bet you’re gonna love it there. I heard your new best friend has a private garden and she lives next to a big park. You’re gonna be able to run all you want now. No more dragging me around for a few hours each week.” Kat grins as she scratches lightly under Juno’s chin. “You’re gonna have to behave though, okay? She’s welcoming her new roommate today, and you don’t want to scare her away, do you?”
Juno just sits there, panting, and Kat is pretty sure she understands absolutely nothing of what she is rambling about. She gets belly rubs in exchange though, so it's a win-win situation regardless. "I'm gonna miss you so much." Kat scrunches her nose and closes her eyes as Juno leaps forward to lick her face. "Okay, okay, okay, I know. I love you too." She giggles and pushes herself away to stand up. "Bye, sweet girl."
"You seem like you were really close," says Catherine, reminding Kat that there is another person in the room.
"Yeah, sort of," she admits, a bit shy after realizing she's been talking to a dog like she would to a human. "I, uh, I named her. She was the first dog who arrived here after I started volunteering here."
"That's really cute," she says, her eyes full of admiration as she looks at Juno and then back at Kat. "Would you mind telling me why you named her Juno?"
"It's a bit of a long story."
"I have time. We have a little under 10 minutes left, remember? Make yourself comfortable." She scootches over to grab one of the cushions in the bin and places it next to her. At the same time, Juno prances towards Catherine and lays between her and the cushion designated for Kat.
So, she takes a seat next to her and decides to tell her about Juno's arrival and her first few months at the shelter. "We'd received this call from this person who we suspect must've been a breeder saying that their "neighbour" was moving, but couldn't bring their puppies with them. When we arrived at the given address, the closest neighbours lived a kilometre away and there was no sign of human life on that plot of land. There was just an empty farm and a litter of pups. We're not sure how many there were in total, you know if the breeder had kept a few, but Juno was definitely the runt. She was so tiny, gosh, I was afraid to hold her."
“I can’t believe people would just abandon their pets like that.” She pouts and reaches out to hold Juno as if she was going to disappear if she didn’t.
"Yeah, honestly, we weren't sure she'd survive, but sure enough, this little one was right on track with the rest of her siblings that we rescued in a matter of a few months. She was so rambunctious. You would've never imagined that she was the runt of the litter. She was a real goofball."
"From what I've seen over these past few visits, she's still a goofball," says Catherine.
"Oh, for sure." Kat snorts and continues, "She’s so clumsy. She gets super excited when it's mealtime, but she's excited to a point where she might step in her bowl. It happened more so when she was smaller, and the bowl was considered bigger for her. But even with food or water under her paw, she would just continue on as if nothing happened. Don't worry, she hasn't done this in a while. I doubt you'll find wet paw prints around your flat."
Catherine shrugs. "It'll make for cute temporary art."
"As a fan of pop-ups, myself, I like your way of thinking, but I'm not sure your roommate would appreciate it."
"That's a problem for another time. Plus, anyone who doesn't like Juno is someone I don't want in my life," she coos as she pets her dog's back.
"Honestly, same. She's the silliest dog I've ever met, which is why I named her Juno. 'Queen of the heavens'. She's the farthest from what you think of when you picture a royalty dog, but she absolutely runs this place. If she wants you to pay attention, she will get her way. And somehow, she made everyone fall for her."
“Perfect name for a perfect dog,” she says, staring lovingly at the dog. “I just wanted to say that I know it’s highly recommended that everyone in the household comes to meet the dog before bringing her home, but my roommate is just moving in today and—”
“Catherine, you’re good, don’t worry. I’ve seen how you are with Juno these past few visits, how thorough you were with paperwork even before it was confirmed that you could adopt her. I’m sure you took Juno into consideration when you decided to get a roommate,” she tells her sincerely because that is what she’s observed. She still wouldn’t say that she was excited about this, but she’d be lying if she said that she would rather have someone else adopt Juno.
“Cathy.”
“What?”
“If you’re going to stay, you might as well call me Cathy.”
“I can go.” She really didn’t want to, but if she was overstaying her welcome—
“No, please stay? Juno likes having you around.” In that moment, Kat thought that maybe owners truly do resemble their dogs because she was convinced Cathy had the most beautiful eyes she had ever seen.
Needless to say, Kat didn’t stand a chance against those pleading hazel eyes. She hesitates for one second before making herself comfortable again on the magenta cushion. “Why did you choose Juno over the other dogs?”
Cathy beams and starts telling her own Juno story. Kat had been there to guide Cathy around the shelter during her first visit, but she was on her break when she first met Juno and missed the whole interaction.
“Meeting Juno was kind of an accident. You’d had just gone on your break and another volunteer was coming to help guide me around, but she had to bring Juno to Jane first. And boy, was I glad things turned out the way they did. From the moment I saw her, there was this voice inside my head that told me that I had to adopt her.”
In the blink of an eye, 10 minutes pass by. One moment Cathy is telling Kat about the puppy her family adopted when she was growing and the next, Jane is back in the room giving Cathy some last-minute advice before she leaves the shelter. Cathy thanks the veterinarian one last time with a hug and watches her exit the room, leaving Cathy and Kat alone again.
“I guess this is it,” Kat says, a hint of sadness in her voice as she glances down at Juno who seems as happy as ever.
“You know, I don’t live that far from here. I could pass by every morning when I walk her to say hi,” Cathy suggests.
Had it been anyone else, Kat would’ve assumed that they were just asking out of politeness or something. With Cathy though, she feels like she would actually be willing to pass by the shelter every morning. “You really don’t have to do that,” Kat assures her with the shake of the head. “Plus, I’m pretty sure Lina would start to doubt my professionalism if she found out.”
“Would she doubt your professionalism if I took you on a date?”
Taken aback, Kat doesn’t respond at first, but she can’t help the smile that spreads on her lips. “I could always buy her some chocolates to get back on her good side,” she says with a shrug. Suddenly feeling shy, she looks down at her shoes and tucks a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
Cathy reaches out to tilt Kat’s head back up with her finger to her chin. “How about we go get ice cream?”
So, Kat swings by Lina’s office and asking her if she can leave early. “Of course, darling,” she says without hesitation.
“You sure?”
“Kat, you’re here nearly every day. Go on and enjoy your life!” Catalina says with a light chuckle. She makes a shooing motion with her hand when she catches the slightest glimpse of hesitation from Kat. “Go, don’t want to keep Cathy waiting now, do you?”
“I-How do you-Who?”
“Jane has been gushing about how adorable you two looked in that room with Juno.”
Kat feels her cheeks warming up again, but she doesn’t really care. How could she when she’s going on a date with such a wonderful woman? Before heading to the shop though, they head back to Cathy’s flat to drop off the books the older girl had been carrying.
The first thing Kat notices as she enters Cathy’s flat is the large boxes by the door. Then, she remembers Cathy mentioning the new roommate earlier and assumes it’s probably theirs. Cathy immediately apologizes for the mess, but Kat waves her off. This was nowhere near the state of chaos that was her own flat.
The second thing she notices is someone suddenly starting to belt some good old Avril Lavigne. And from the moment she hears ‘hey! Hey! You! You! I don’t like your girlfriend,’ Kat’s eyes widen. She could recognize that voice anywhere. And this moment is proof of it.
“Sorry again.” Cathy winces as she bends down to soothe Juno.
“Do you mind if I try something?” Cathy frowns, but shakes her head.
“Annie!” Kat yells, hoping that her gut instinct is right and she isn’t making a fool of herself in front of her crush. Not even a second later, she hears the music stop abruptly, followed by a thud and rapid footsteps approaching them.
She sees the tuft of wild dark curls first and the face of her favourite cousin second. “Kat! What are you doing here? Not that I’m not happy to see you! Just very unexpected… Wait, how do you even know where I live?” Anne pulls back from her tight embrace and looks at her younger cousin quizzically.
“You’re cousins with my flatmate?” Cathy chimes in.
Kat doesn’t get the chance to answer because Anne yells, “oh my god! When I told you to ask out the cute girl from the shelter earlier, she’s the cute girl you were talking about?”
“I’m not answering that,” Cathy simply says, shaking her head.
“Alright, don’t mind me then. Go on and continue to have fun on your little date,” Anne says as she slowly walks back to her room, but not without adding, “not too much fun though!”
“I’m the cute girl from the shelter?” Kat asks, barely holding back her smile. “Did you have a crush on me?”
“Yeah, what about it?” Cathy shrugs, refusing to look Kat in the eye.
“You had a crush on me… how embarrassing,” she teases.
“You agreed to go out with me!” Cathy retorts with her mouth wide open in disbelief.
“Still embarrassing,” Kat sings as she bends down to ruffle Juno’s fur. “Isn’t that right Juno?”
“Whatever, I’m going to put my stuff in my bedroom. You can join me when you grow up.” Cathy sticks her tongue out and leaves Kat by the front door with Juno. Kat fights back the urge to make a joke about how short Cathy is. She’ll keep it for another time.
When they make it to her room, Kat just stands near the door, leaning against the closet. While Cathy carefully puts her books back on what Kat assumes is their designated place on the bookshelf, she allows herself to look around the room. Her eyes land on a rather silly-looking poster.
“Nice,” Kat says, pointing to the poster displayed above Cathy’s bed.
Cathy giggles. “I found it online. I follow this account where all they post is famous paintings, but they replace the humans with dogs. And of course, when I found out they had a shop, I just had to buy something,” she explains before reaching inside her closet. “The Creation of Adam isn’t the only one I got. I also got Girl With a Pearl Earring, The Two Fridas, and The Great Wave. I’m not sure where to hang them yet, so they’re still chilling in there.” Cathy pulls out three tubes and carefully unrolls them one after the other.
“Wait a minute… The Great Wave didn’t have any humans in it. How can a dog—”
Before she even finishes her question, she is faced with the image of a pug surfing on the big wave. “I mean, how could I not buy it, am I right?” Cathy asks with a grin.
“I think you might be my soulmate,” Kat says between laughs, but regrets it the moment those words leave her mouth. Just as she feels her entire being filled with anxiety, Cathy lets out an easy laugh.
“We’ll have to at least go on a second date to find out,” Cathy says with a wink.

JUST TELL HER (POSIE)
Josie felt like her heart was about to jump out of her chest, a clear indication that she was anxious.
Today was the day. The day she would finally do it.
She glanced over at the calendar hung on the wall, taking note of the red circling over today’s date with a ‘you can do it!’ staring back at her. She narrowed her eyes at the innocent calendar. “Damn you,” she whispered harshly to it.
“Who are you talking to?” Lizzie suddenly appeared in their shared room, an amused smile plastered to her face.
“No one,” she quickly responded and smiled back at her twin.
“Right,” Lizzie said, unconvinced. “You ready to go?”
“Yep, you can go first, I’ll be there in a sec. I just need to do something real quick.”
Lizzie shrugged, ignoring her sister’s strange behaviour and headed out the door. She figured that it probably wasn’t anything serious. If it was, she’d find out eventually when Josie would want to talk about it.
When she was finally alone, Josie noted that she only had a few minutes before she really had to leave, less she wanted to be late to class, which she hated to do. The brunette looked at herself in the full-length mirrored she shared with Lizzie and placed her hands on her hips, albeit reluctantly. She heard that the ‘Supergirl pose’ as people called it, was supposed to help increase your confidence, but Josie wasn’t really convinced. She just felt ridiculous.
Josie let her hands and shoulders drop as she let out a sigh. Maybe she could do this another day. She was running out of time for her pep talk anyways. She could set her alarm to wake her earlier tomorrow, so she’d have more time to psych herself up. Just as she was about to give up, her phone buzzed.
penelope💝: morning my love💗 i hope you have a good day:)
A feeling of warmth washed over her body reading over the text, and Josie debated over whether she should call Penelope so she could help her out with her dilemma. Before she could make a decision, her phone buzzed again, this time Penelope’s contact showing up as well as the ‘decline’ and ‘accept’ icons at the bottom.
“You better do it today,” Penelope said as soon as Josie picked up.
“Morning to you too, babe.” Josie bit her lip to stop herself from grinning like an idiot, even though nobody was there to see her.
She heard the other witch’s muffled laugh on the other end of the line. “I’m not kidding, Jojo,” she said, but her voice no longer carried the same serious tone it did at first.
“I don’t think I’m ready,” Josie admitted as she played a strand of her hair, now sitting on the edge of her bed.
“Come on, you’ve been preparing for this for literal months, baby,” Penelope told her encouragingly.
“I know, I know…” She groaned as she fell back on her bed. “I just…”
“What is it? Talk to me,” Penelope pleaded gently, melting Josie’s heart.
“I can’t do this even though everyone says I can. People always assume I’m able to do everything because Lizzie’s the ‘messy twin’, but I mess up too! I’m not some perfect being.”
“If it makes you feel better, I know you’re not perfect. I mean, you chose strawberry ice cream over chocolate ice cream. Who even does that?”
“Penelope,” Josie whined.
“Sorry, sorry,” she apologized, but Josie could still hear her giggling.
“What if something goes terribly wrong?”
“Like?”
“I don’t know… I could trip,” Josie suggested.
“I’ll be there to catch you.”
“What if I trip over my words though?”
“Then, you just have to take a breath and start over. I fumble with my words sometimes. All I do is stop and repeat myself,” Penelope explained.
“You never do that. Sentences flow out of your mouth like water dropping down a waterfall,” Josie retorted.
The rest of their conversation consisted of Josie proposing possible scenarios and Penelope countering them with logical responses. It went on for a good minute or two until Josie heard a knock at her door. “Hold on,” she said as she went to see who could be looking for her or Lizzie when everyone should be heading to class.
Opening the door, Josie faced a smirking Penelope who ended the call. “You are totally going to be late, Jojo.”
“What should I do.” Josie pouted which made the shorter girl chuckle as she shook her head. She entered the room, closing the door behind and pulling Josie into a tight hug. “Listen, I know you might now feel you’ve got this, but we’ve been over this together and I don’t doubt that you’ve practiced by yourself in your spare time as well. I won’t tell you what to do. Just know that I’ll be there for whatever you choose to do. It’s not like I have much of a choice anyways.”
“You say that as if you don’t skip class.” Josie scoffed.
“I only skip when I have plans to convince you to do the same because I want to sneak you off-campus,” she said matter-of-factly, bopping Josie’s nose. “And we almost got caught last week, so we’ll have to lay low for a while. I do have an idea of something else you could do though.” Josie perked up. “Head to class and do what you’ve been practising for, for months.”
She deflated and groaned again. “Fine.”
Penelope let out a chortle at the sight of her cute girlfriend. “Come on you goofball.” She extended her hand out to Josie. “If we make a run for it, we can still make it to class on time.”
Spoiler alert, they barely made it on time, but it didn’t really matter since the teacher was late as well. Josie took advantage of that to finally execute her plan. She took a deep breath, threw one last glance at Penelope who winked, and approached her classmate who often sat a few rows behind her.
“Hey,” she said quietly, “I know we’ve known each other for like five years now, but I just wanted to let you know that my name’s actually Josie.”
The blonde made an ‘o’ shape with their mouth before a light shade of pink dusted their cheeks. “Oh my God, really? I’m so sorry! I can’t believe I’ve been calling you Jessie this whole time.”
The pair continued to exchange apologies (Josie for not correcting them sooner, and her classmate for not realizing their mistake sooner). In the end, they agreed that it was an innocent mistake. The first time they met, they had asked a snacking Josie to borrow a pencil. With a mouth full of crackers, Josie was caught off guard when they ask for her name, and she didn’t have the courage to correct them when they said, “thank you so much, Jessie!”
Their teacher walked in soon after, cutting their conversation short. As Josie made her way back to her seat, she could’ve sworn she saw Lizzie fist bump Penelope.
penelope💝: i'm vv proud of you bb
jojo💞: thank you for helping me out babe ilysm❤️
penelope💝: it was all you
It was a small thing, but it meant a lot to Josie. She smiled at herself, mentally checking the box of one of the tasks on her ‘becoming a better Josie list’ that she made for the New Year. Then, she was reminded how of the next task on her list: stop sleeping after midnight. That was going to be a lot harder and she was definitely going to struggle what with Penelope sneaking her out of her room to gaze at the stars on the most random nights. Perhaps Josie could just scratch that goal. After all, stargazing nights with Penelope weren’t something she was keen on getting rid of since it often led to something that involved more… physical afterwards.
Stealing another glance at her girlfriend (who was absolutely uninterested in what their teacher was lecturing, preferring to doodle in her notebook), Josie bit her lower lip and decided that she was positively going to scratch that off her list.
jojo💞: is tonight a good night for stargazing?
penelope💝: every night is a good night for stargazing;)

REAL SUBTLE (WAYHAUGHT)
Red.
All Waverly could focus on was the bit of red hair that poked out of the girl gliding around the rink in a sea of blue jerseys. She had just finished cheer practice and decided to stick around to watch Purgatory High’s girls’ hockey team practice. Waverly knew most of the girls on the team because Purgatory was such a small town and that meant pretty much everyone knew each other, but her attention was all on one particular player.
Nicole Haught.
She’d been the talk of the town from the moment she stepped foot in Purgatory a year ago, which was inevitable. After all, she was the new kid in a small town who’d arrived in the middle of the school year. And her striking red hair and insane hockey skills did not go unnoticed. Both earned her a nickname. Haught Shot.
She was like a ball of fire on the ice, speeding through her opponents. Yet, she never lost control of the puck gliding against her stick. It was truly a sight to see. A sight Waverly got to indulge in all alone in the bleachers. Practice was nearly over and most of the players had left the rink to shower and head home, but Nicole had the habit of staying behind for some time alone on the ice.
The janitors hated that because they had to stay later to maintain the ice after everyone left, but Waverly wasn’t one to complain. Not when she got to watch the tall athlete flex all the muscles in her body to shoot the puck into the net while skating in different directions.
“What are you still doing here?” Waverly was pulled out of her trance by the sound of her older sister arriving next to her and dumping her duffle bag on the seat next to her. “I thought I told you to wait for me in the hallway.” Wynonna had just put her phone away, so she didn’t notice Waverly drooling over the captain of the girls’ hockey team.
“Practice finished earlier, so I came to wait here instead of standing in the halls,” said Waverly. That wasn’t the real reason Waverly decided to wait in the bleachers, but Wynonna didn’t need to know that her little sister wanted Nicole Haught to pick her up with those strong arms of hers as she kissed her.
Wynonna had no trouble accepting that explanation as she shrugged and picked her bag up again after rolling her shoulders a few times. Just as Wynonna and Waverly were about to leave, Nicole appeared by the gate of the rink, seeming to be ready to call it a night as well. “Hey, Earp,” she called and both sisters turned around and the senior responded with a nod while the sophomore gave Nicole a shy ‘hey’.
“Right, sorry, forgot there were two of you. I should’ve said Earps,” Nicole offered with a half-smile.
“It’s alright Haught, no need for weird small talk. We were just about to leave,” Wynonna replied and smirked after seeing Nicole grow irritated by her.
“See you tomorrow, Earp.” Nicole rolled her eyes at the older sister, but then added in a gentler tone, “And see you around, Waverly.”
The sisters bid their goodbyes and finally left. Once they were in Wynonna’s car, Waverly smacked her older sister’s arm. “Do really have to annoy her all the time?”
“What?” Wynonna looked at Waverly, acting like she had done nothing wrong, but Waverly wasn’t having any of it. She kept up her semi-glare. “Come on, I’m just having a bit of fun. Dad’s pretty much forced me into hockey. And Haught’s… well, a hotshot. She’s the youngest captain Purgatory High has ever had. So, she needs to be humbled from time to time. Wouldn’t want her to become an arrogant asshole like a certain ex of yours now, do we?”
“She’s not like him,” Waverly said, but quickly corrected herself. “I mean, she doesn’t seem like that type of person.
“Are you and Haught BFFs now?” Wynonna snorted. With her eyes on the road, she couldn’t see Waverly trying her best to fight off the blush that was spreading across her cheeks.
“Just be nice, won’t you?”
“That’s your thing, babygirl,” Wynonna said, but seeing her little sister maintaining that stern expression of hers, she finally gave in. “Fine, whatever. I’ll be… polite. I don’t know why you’re being so insistent. I didn’t even know you and Haught were friends.”
“We’re not,” Waverly replied. Again, she wasn’t completely telling the truth, but if she were to describe what she and Nicole were, she wouldn’t use ‘friend’.
When Waverly snuck out of the house later on, she was certain that she and Nicole could never be described as just friends. Not when they were making out in the junior’s car parked behind the homestead, hidden behind some trees.
Being in a secret relationship was the last thing Waverly expected when her younger self thought about high school. In her fantasy, she would be an excellent student, probably highly involved in student life and maybe being in a happy relationship that everyone would be aware of. Firstly, because it was Purgatory, and secondly, because that was just how high school usually worked.
Most of it came true. Waverly Earp was known as a top student that many approached to have her tutor them. She was also part of the cheerleading squad ever since her freshman year and she was in various clubs here and there. Finally, there was that relationship she was in last year. The whole school knew about them, but Waverly didn’t qualify her first relationship that didn’t even last her whole freshman year as a happy one.
This one though, with Nicole. God, Waverly had never thought she could ever feel such a level of pure bliss around another person. Except maybe with her sisters during that one Christmas where she, Wynonna and Willa didn’t fight. And looked how that turned out. Willa had moved out as soon as she turned 18, leaving Wynonna and Waverly to live with their aunt Gus and uncle Curtis (who then passed away a short while after they’d moved in).
So, Waverly didn’t want to ruin her relationship with Nicole. The best solution she could come up with was to keep it lowkey, and by that, she meant to keep it private so that no one’s unwanted opinions would be heard, and no whispered rumours would torment them.
It was easy in the beginning, and God was it exciting. They snuck around in the halls, with Nicole pulling Waverly into an empty classroom when she knew everyone was too busy heading to the cafeteria for lunch. They would plan to have secret meetings in the bathroom that no student ever went in because of how far away it was from most classrooms. On days where Nicole didn’t have practice and Waverly did, the older girl would wait around for the cheerleader to finish just so she could say goodbye.
Being in a somewhat secret relationship did have its hardships though. It went from small things like not being to hold hands while walking down the halls to not being able to go hang out at each other’s houses out of fear of being caught by Wynonna or Chrissy, Nicole’s neighbour/Waverly’s friend. Sometimes, Waverly just wanted to yell to everyone that she had somehow gotten lucky enough to date the most wonderful girl in the world, but she couldn’t.
It wasn’t like they established that that was forbidden per se. They agreed to be discrete and not put their relationship on display, but they also agreed that at some point down the line, they wouldn’t hide anymore. They just didn’t know when or how.
“Hello to you too, Earp,” Nicole said once they pulled away from their heated kiss.
“Don’t you call my sister that?” Waverly pulled a face.
“Fine, fine. Hi, cutie.” The captain held the younger girl’s hands up to place a gentle kiss on her knuckles.
“Hi,” Waverly replied with a shy smile. “I missed you. I can’t believe I only saw you once today and it was from the bleachers.”
“I know, I’m sorry I couldn’t come meet you before practice. Coach called me in for an emergency meeting for tomorrow’s game.” Nicole kissed her as an attempt to wipe that pout off Waverly’s lips. “I missed you too, but we’re together now. So, no more dwelling on sad stuff, yeah?” As Waverly nodded, Nicole pulled out two burgers (vegan of course), fries and a smoothie from a take-out bag.
“Nic, it’s literally midnight.” Waverly pointed out.
“Perfect for a midnight snack then,” Nicole answered with a wink.
“You have the first game of the final tournament tomorrow,” Waverly added, no malice in her voice. She knew that Nicole wasn’t necessarily on a diet or anything, but being a dedicated student-athlete, she rarely ever allowed herself to eat junk food, especially not before game days.
“I find it adorable that you worry about me, but trust me, we’ve got this in the bag. We’ve beaten Silas High so many times.”
“Cocky now, aren’t we?” Waverly teased with an amused smile.
“It’s not cocky if it’s true.” Nicole shrugged and earned herself a playful shove from the brunette.
Like a self-fulfilling prophecy, Purgatory High’s Blue Devils were torching Silas High’s Anglers. The waves of blue in the bleachers were going wild over their own Haught Shot managing to dodge nearly every opponent who had come for her, and scoring or assisting to score multiple goals. Waverly, herself, was probably one of the loudest in the crowd, supporting both her sister and her girlfriend.
Although, she couldn’t help but want to be all alone watching Nicole be the glorious hockey player she was. She knew it was illogical, considering that she was at a high school hockey game and a major point of it was to have a crowd cheering for their team, but if Waverly had it her way, she would be the sole audience member present just so she could profess to everyone how proud of her girlfriend she was. And as Waverly watched Nicole score one last goal before the horn announced the end of the game, all she wanted to do was kiss her superstar of a girlfriend in front of the whole school.
Waverly didn’t know what made her stand up and walk down the bleachers with intention. Whether it was the months of anticipation or the adrenaline that was coursing in her veins from watching her girlfriend crushing it on the ice, it didn’t matter. The only thing that mattered was that Waverly was now at the gate of the rink, having last-minute doubts.
She didn’t have much time to think about whether or not she was going to go through with her plan as Nicole caught sight of her and broke away from her teammates to skate towards her. Seeing the redhead take off her helmet as she reached her helped Waverly make up her mind.
“Hey—” Nicole started, but never got the end of that sentence out of her mouth as Waverly leaned up on her tippy toes to grab her face and captured Nicole’s lips with her own. She had a fleeting thought about how sweaty Nicole’s face was, but she didn’t care. Waverly was just wrapped up in a blanket of joy.
“Do you even know what subtle means?” Nicole’s voice carried no malice. She grinned and kept her eyes on Waverly, completely ignoring their classmates surrounding them.
“Subtlety is overrated,” Waverly replied before kissing her again.
By the time things wrapped up and a group of teens had invaded the Earp homestead at Wynonna’s after-game party, news had gotten around, and everyone knew about Nicole and Waverly’s relationship. Well, nearly everyone.
“I mean, it could be worse.” Wynonna shrugged. “My sister could be dating Haught Shot.” Mercedes stared at Wynonna with an exasperated expression.
“What?” The brunette tilted her head in confusion. Mercedes tried to communicate with her using only her face and somehow, a few seconds later, it was almost like there was a light bulb that turned on in Wynonna’s head. “Wait a minute! They’re dating, aren’t they?”
Glancing over to the bottom of the staircase, Wynonna could see Waverly sitting on one of the steps next to Nicole as they chatted with their noses almost touching. Instinctively, Wynonna wanted to warn Nicole to not break her sister’s heart. But she knew deep down that the junior would never do such a thing, and Wynonna was definitely too tired to come up with an intimidating speech anyway. So, as she observed the couple just a while longer, Wynonna decided that she wasn’t going to follow Waverly’s advice. If Haught was going to date her sister, Wynonna was going to annoy the hell out of Nicole.
